Total disclosure: I did not finish this book. The level of detail the author goes into makes it difficult to take in his theories, coupled with the essay style referencing system in a text that very much reads as an academic paper. I'm sure there's some great things in here but unfortunately they get hopelessly lost in the incredibly detailed accounts of what doesn't always seem to be relevant information. Left confused at the end.

This is a very detailed and comprehensive account of Russian history. Some parts were very interesting and other parts were less so. The style of writing is a bit unorthodox which makes it easy to get lost and lose interest while reading. The author often jumps freely between subjects without much warning or reason. I at least know more about Russia now than before reading the book so it was worth the effort.
