What does it mean to "serve in newness of the Spirit and not in oldness of the letter"? What is the Christian's relationship to the Law of Moses? What is the "law of Christ"? How are love and law related? Are the commandments of the Old Testament still relevant in the Christian life? What does it mean to be "free from the Law"? How does love "fulfill the whole law"? THE BEST book I've read on the subjects of law vs. gospel, covenants in redemptive history, Israel and the church, and Christian ethics! Leiter makes it known first and foremost that his view does not fall under a particular systematic category such as Covenant Theology, New Covenant Theology, or Dispensationalism (though he himself believes many of the things each of these systems teach include biblical truths). The way the book is laid out is extremely convenient and helpful. After each chapte ...more

Sometimes when a book is paradigm-shifting, or even shattering, it feels wrong to review it at all. "This book reviewed ME; how can I turn around and assign it a paltry rating?" I feel this way about many books, and this is one of the foremost.

At one point during the first few chapters of this book, I looked at my husband and said, "I know I've read Galatians several times, but it's like I've never read it before!" That's how amazing Leiter is at highlighting and explaining passages I honestly t

This book truly puts the Old Covenant and its attendant laws in perspective, compared to the law of Christ under the New Covenant. Christians are not a people of Old Covenant laws, but a people that are led by the Spirit and living according to a Person, not the letter of the law.

After second reading:
It was even better after the second reading. The depths that this book reaches within the New Covenant are astounding. I would recommend this book to every Christian who is serious about the New Cov

A beautiful and thoroughly biblical look at what the new covenant in Christ means for the believer. A deep and exegetical book with a warm pastoral heart that all believers can profit from. Leiter really wants the reader to rejoice in these realities and he certainly achieved that result with me. Highly recommended.

Good book. Important book. The author presents his case in a well organized and logical manner. The book is a good presentation of the biblical narrative as a whole and of Jesus as the final revelation of God who alone gives meaning to the entirety of the biblical text, most especially that of the Old Testament. Every Christian should know this but many don't: always interpret the Old Testament in the light of the New Testament, especially in the light of the teachings of Jesus. Biblical revelat ...more

This is a pretty good read. The author takes a position that is in the middle of a Covenantal & Dispensational view of the Law (of Moses). Actually though I think it is more in line w/dispensational thought then being the middle ground of the two. The author's position is that the Law of Moses is a unit, and is always treated as a whole (there is no ceremonial, moral, ritual division, that was a concept brought about by Aquinas). We as Christians are not under the Law of Moses but we are under t ...more

A great look into the entailments of the Old Testament law, how the New Testament understood its fulfillment, and how the believer is to live in the law of Christ--which is love.
