I guess my biggest issue with this book is that while the story gives the seemings of an epic challenge and adventure, everything is pretty straightforward and easy for our heroes. Given a magic sword, kill all the bad guys, run away just in the nick of time, get to the one area the bad guys won't enter, constantly given advice on how to move forward or where to go, everyone volunteers helpful advice, information, or guidance. Overall, their biggest challenge is walking/running to their next ...more

I grew up reading a lot of books from Enid Blyton to Stephen King, mystery to fantasy. Fantasy books I read included Terry Brooks 'Sword Of Shannara' series, 'Magic Kingdom For Sale - Sold', 'The Chronicles of Prydain' by Lloyd Alexander.

As I started reading this book it became clear that this was a fantasy story reminiscent of my childhood favourites.

The storyline revolves around a narrator, The Great Atavus, telling The Fable of the Summoner for the first time ever. His story begins with a

This book truly captivated me from the first page. I admit, it was a bit confusing at first with me wondering what exactly was going on but I liked the way the story was told, being years in the future with someone telling the story in past tense and being able to see what happened to the land in the future and hearing the reactions of the people who lived in the same place and are hearing their full history for the first time. The story was a seriously epic novel with just so much going on, ...more

Randy Massey is a first time author who possesses a wonderful gift, the gift of storytelling. The Summoner is a tale of majestic proportions. The journey you take once you begin reading this novel is suspenseful, magical and vividly entertaining. The lands of Arth and its inhabitants are brought to life by a warm and welcoming narrator. I cannot remember the last time I read a book that painted a landscape as clearly as this one. There are so many wonderful beings, who each have a background, a ...more

It's been awhile since I've read a fantasy novel but I must say that I liked this one. The way it was written was like that of a great storyteller back before books existed and people relied on those storytellers for entertainment.

The story is of the evil N'atax who seems bent on world domination, as most bad guys are. :) And of course I love the whole female heroine thing. Definitely up my alley. The author does a fantastic job of detailing and describing the land of Arth as well. All in all I

Loved this book from cover to cover! I think the idea of a heroine taking the lead in an action book is awesome ;o) Can't wait for the next books in the series to come out!

A very good book to read. Not usually into fantasy, but I tried this one out and liked it a lot. I am actually looking forward to reading more books by this author.

I have been reading a lot of fantasy recently and have enjoyed many good books. I saw some chatter for The Summoner (The Legends of Arth) by Randy Massey and thought I would check it out for myself. Read on to find out what I thought!

Summary (from the author): When Raven's family is taken captive by the hordes of the evil lord N'atax, her only desire is to rescue them before they reach the dreaded castle Axtalia. But, as she pursues them through the lands of Arth, aided by her friend Le-thon,

I was provided a copy of this book through Goodreads’ READ IT AND REAP program in exchange for my fair and honest review. I thank the author for providing me with this opportunity.

SUMMONER tells of Raven’s quest to save her land and people from the evil lord N’atax. It is presented as a story being told to some villagers, long years after the events took place. In this way, SUMMONER differed from many fantasy stories and this made for an interesting approach. Unfortunately, however, this

Princess Bride meets Never Ending Story with battles of epic proportions found in stories like Lord Of The Rings! This awesome book had it all!! Raven and Le-thon fulfil a prophecy long foretold and embark on a dangerous and thrilling quest to save her abducted family and several kingdoms from a vicious enemy known as N’atax. Fantastical creatures in many forms guide them and help them along the way.
Apart from a few tiny spelling mistakes, this brilliantly executed book in flow and tempo

A very imaginative and descriptive story. It is re-telling by Great Atavus of the wonderful but dangerous adventure of two young people. Raven and Le-thon travel through strange lands and face many perils on their quest to save Raven's family captured by N'atax and his army.

With fascinating flying things, boar riders, prophecies and talking trees the story reminded me of LOTR and Narnia and even a bit of Avatar. If you like epic adventures with great and difficult to trudge through landscapes,

Do you ever find a book that just sounds so great? And then you read it and you love the story but the writing is just so god awful that you can't enjoy it as much as you want to? This is one of those books. Raven's family is taken captive by the evils of the land, actually named Evils, and she goes on a quest to save them and face her destiny. Really the story line was very good and I enjoyed it. The writing was just

This story-line has great potential but I felt that the novel did not quite live up to it.

It has all the ingredients of an epic; a kick-ass heroine and her side-kick, a prophecy, a quest, and an evil overlord and his hordes - yet it does not read like an epic. Early on I got the feeling that I was reading a children's book, which I was not expecting, and I could not shake that feeling. Everything is spoon-fed to the reader; this

From the first page of this book I knew this was going to be like nothing I have ever read before. I loved how descriptive the author was about the landscape and setting and I felt like I was actually there at some points in the novel.

I did not love that it was told in the perspective of The Great Atuvus telling the story after much time has passed. I wish it would have been told from Raven's point of view as I love the female heroine storyline. I wish we could have gotten in her head more, but

This is book is written as a fireside tale. It is a reminder of how history was shared before the time of written word. I enjoyed the plot and the flow was fairly smooth. I would have given this 5 stars but I found that the detail in the individual encounters was lacking. It is a great tale for younger children as they would find it fascinating! A young girl and her friend go off to save her family from an evil lord. During the chase, she discovers she is a warrior whose coming has been ...more

I don't usually read this genre but it kept my attention with the different scenarios! A fantasy can be mind-boggling and yet can seem normal to follow at the same time...that applies to "The Summoner" as I enjoyed the creativity of the author! I was fascinated as the narrator told the many, interesting adventures of Ravon and Le-thon to his younger family. What a surprise at the end! A very good read!

Being a new author sure has been fun and challenging! My goal as a writer is to tell a story in such a way that the reader can "see" all that is happening and "experience" the tale as it unfolds! Currently writing a trilogy to follow this book. Look for the Legends of Arth Book Two: Daedalus Rises sometime next year. Sooner if I can somehow find the time lol! Enjoy, my friends.

Beautifully done!!

Randy Massey weaves a very colorful tale in The Summoned. I very much enjoyed the way this adventure is told throughout this book and the beautiful prose Massey incorporates in every detailed descriptions of his fantastic creatures, action scenes, and even in describing the different places in his world. Beautifully done!!
