Every fifty years, the most powerful ethereal and infernal beings convene on Earth to resolve conflicts with mediation by kopides--humans born to police relations between Heaven and Hell. They're meeting in Elise Kavanagh's territory this year, and she used to be the greatest kopis in the world. But she's not invited.

An old friend, Lucas McIntyre, asks her to attend the su

This was very short and kind of different than the rest of the books in the series. Elise and Anthony go to Las Vegas to help facilitate the periodically scheduled summit between the Demons, Humans and Angeles. However, they get sidetracked by a murderer, a bunch of humans who have, for some reason, decided that they should monopolize all human-demon-angel relationships and control it all with an iron hand! The Union, as they call themselves, are ruthless and self-righteous prigs whom I
I had a hard time connecting with this one so it took me forever to finish. I would read a few pages and put it down for days. I did really like the ending, however, so I'll pick up the next.
I purchaxed this as an ebook from Amazon.

Ok this is going to be a little weird. My review will actually be for Books 1-6 in The Descent Series,
Death's Hand
The Darkest Gate
Dark Union
Damnation Marked
Dire Blood
Defying Fate

The reason is I became so obsessed in reading the next book that I didn't bother to stop to write a review. Really who'd want to write a review when you could be with James and Elise traveling through inter-dimensional gates to hell, fighting angels and demons or coming back from

James - 1 and Elise - 1. What am I counting? The number of times they've died. But in terms of who's saving who, James is obviously losing. A quick recap of some things that happened in The Darkest Gate: Elise and James, along with Anthony and Betty, had to fight two opponents; one a giant spider who rules Las Vegas and the other an aspis-kopis pair with a need for

Elise needs to go and help an old friend Lucas McIntyre with this conference between Heaven And Hell. Union of Kopides and Aspides has took over the meeting, and they want Elise dead. Elise tries to go undercover but things don't go as planned...

I must say I hate Anthony. I hate him with fiery passion of a thousand sun. Hee's just so annoyng and whiny and stupid. Elise, why? And I'm so mad at James. He just needs to dump that bitch Stephanie and realize Elise is just waiting for him to get over

It felt too short and a little long at the same time. It does give some hints of her past which I found compelling. Can't wait to get my hands on book 4

This wasn't a very long book. It feels like I started to read it and then it was over...It was good none the less. Things are starting to click in place now I think with the overall storyline, at least the smaller bits.

Elise and Anthony are still reeling from the events that shook their lives and the loss of Betty. They’re barely getting by, Anthony having lost almost as much as Elise and Elise crawling into a bottle and refusing to listen to anyone – especially people in need.

Until an old Kopis contact, Lucas, contacts her – and he’s a man she owes and trusts and cannot say no to. He needs her and Anthony to pretend to be him and his wife to represent his territory. It’s time for a 50 year meeting of Angels a

"Dark Union" sure is a fitting title, because the Union of kopis and apsis sure is dark and its motives are suspect. You don’t just round up kopis and apsis and witches by force unless you are a bit iffy. Where do they get their money from? There cannot be all that many Mr. Black type kopis – at least not if they are doing their jobs the way they are supposed to. But messing with friends of Elise might not be the smartest thing these guys have ever done. Especially not an Elise that is bursting ...more

Dark Union is book #3 in the Descent series. Although I love this series, this installment fell a little flat.

This book is more emotionally darker than the others. Anthony and Elise are grieving for their loss of Betty and James is barely present. We watch Anthony slip further into depression and overall sadness. Elise is on the same path, only her job as a demon hunter is a great distraction. Her old friend, Lucas, contacts her for a favor. He needs them to attend the angel/demon summit as hims

Elise, a Kopis (demon fighter), after her last fight in which one of her best friends, if she has any, was killed and she killed the demon who controlled the demons and dimension gates just wants to rest and have nothing to do with angels, demons, her ex-partner or Anthony, her best friends cousin who thinks he is her boyfriend. McIntyre, another kopis and someone she considers a friend has asked her to come see him. It seems The Union, a group of Kopis' from Europe who have joined together and ...more

When an old friend of Elise's calls in a favor, he leaves out a few details. Asked to stand in for him at bicentennial summit, she and Anthony learn there is a new force in town, The Union. They are quickly taking over, and they don't always play nice. Elise ends up investigating a murder where the suspect is the last person she expected and she's pretty pissed about it. Forced to play nice with angels and demons the Godslayer brings plenty of action in this installment. While the book wasn't as ...more

Good gravy! When S.M. Reine decides to stir up the pot, she does it in a BIG way! As bad as the otherworldly bad guys are, I find The Union to be utterly terrifying in a creeping, insidious sort of way. They're masquerading as the good guys, but they have their own agenda that threatens Elise and all the others like her. That gives me the willies in a way that no giant spider demon can.

I *really* like the direction the overall arc is taking. It's so dark that I can't see a way out of it for our

So I don't think it's a secret how much I love this series. I took a break between the first two books because I needed time to wrap my ahead around what was going on. Elise was amazing in this book. I was glad that there was less of James, I feel like he doesn't understand Elise and he doesn't care too. She's just this annoying thorn in his side and that bothers me. I can tell that Elise has emotions however deep she buries them and I have a feeling most of them are for James. I really truly lo ...more

Catch it all at ♀Bookworm.

Third and final installment for this box set, and I'm quite sad from taking a break from it. Gotta admit that these books weren't easy to jump to head-on. I'm not the type of person to take seriously entries starting with "Now" or "May 199". I'm terrible at timelines overall. IRL too.
My ability of forgetting this writing style with each book only proves my point of most of the times forgetting the characters' names right after finishing the book. But, let's get back to

This is about a hundred twenty pages of almost nonstop action and treachery, pompous hypocritical paramilitary types, as well as a really angry and annoyed Elise Kavanagh and anyone who is familiar with this series knows you do not want to be on her bad side. The general storyline of this episode is well presented in the description / synopsis. Dark Union was, in my opinion, wonderful; of course I am a huge fan and love to get caught up in the adventure that is Elise's life. The world building c ...more

This book wasn't as good as the last one and it was much shorter.

It had a decent plot that was easy to follow, but Elise was kind of lacking a lot of her badassness.

Anthony continues to be involved in a way that I just don't see happening. And I have come to really dislike him. I don't mind that Elise is a bitch, she's supposed to be heartless, and cold. But I think she needs someone who has no problem standing up for themselves. She doesn't come across as the kind of person who would

The time has come for another summit between heaven and hell, with the humans mediating. One of Elise's few friends asks her to impersonate him at the conference so he can stay with his pregnant wife. Elise is glad to get away from her unwanted mental link with James and the local demons' pleas for protection. But when she shows up at the conference, with boyfriend Anthony in tow, she's immediately arrested for murder.

The plot is high stakes and high tension, but this book is really about expan

Elise Kavanagh is a demon hunter that most think is dead. So when she is not invited to the 50 year summit for the supernatural, it is no big deal. Then a fellow demon hunter invites her to sit in for him and so it begins. Once she arrives at the location, she is arrested by a group called the Union. The Union is trying to unite the demon hunters and their witches under one banner. This is under the guise of allowing for better organization and resources but Elise sees it as bullying tactics and ...more

I completely surprised with this book. I initially got these books (the first 3 read together) because of it being free on Kindle and was in need of a reading fix. I didn't have much expectations due to the series being free but I am so glad I read them.. I thoroughly enjoyed the books and can't wait to start reading the rest of the series.

The book had a great flow to it, contained demons and angels.
I enjoyed the main character and the relationships with the people around her. Also I actually li

This was a nice filler and a great way to introduce the Union, a couple of bullies wanting to militant the kopides on earth. We were also introduced to some interesting characters related to Elise's past, and we were teased with yet more mysteries and questions about Elise Kavanagh, the greatest kopide.

No, there's no new development between her and James. She's a real seemingly heartless witch in this installment, and in the beginning, it was so bad that I was shocked. But don't worry, if you un
I got this urban fantasy e-book for free and started reading it completely out of series context. It's book 2.5 in a series, and unfortunately, it's just not working for me to jump into the series that far in. Worse, I don't like the black-ops vibe and multiple point of view writing. The first 16% of the book comes across as too bleak, too mean, too political. It opens on a rather cruel murder and then introduces a tough-as-nails chick as a main character. I'm not into the characters, so I'm not ...more

When I was younger I read the first part of the Anita Blake series (Books 1-9) and I loved it. I was obsessed, I devoured those books in a day. Then came the rest and Anita's character changed so much and the books began to loose the reason they were good. Not the sex--the plot. Something could be wrapped up with Anita having sex with like 8 men. Come on!

This is the same feeling I had with this book. You read it expecting something to happen but Elise gets out of it all so easily that you can't
I didn't realise until after I finished this book that it was not in fact the first book of the series but book 2.5 >.< This explains a LOT since I found it difficult at times to understand the world described, which if I had read the series from the beginning would have made much more sense.

I did like the basic plot line though, though chick as the main character, kicks ass and fights evil to put it very simply.

For now I give this novella a 2.5 stars but I'm sure that once I read the ent

A sort story read, introducing a new group and plot into the series. There was no action based on fight a few friendly scuffles between kopis but nothing major. The main female lead demonstrates her awesomeness once again, which I will never get tired of. The supporting characters were really cool and some were supportive of the female lead even though she will never truly trust them. She's a no mistakes and second chances girl you realize when reading this book. Than you have your fair share if ...more

This one read a lot quicker than the last book (was it shorter). U can def see how Anthony and Elise just don't work as a couple, they're in completely different places, but he still stands by her. U also get to meet other people who will be players later on. The only thing I don't understand is how does she get the Godslayer nickname.....she still hasn't killed a god yet (did I miss it????). The other guy took care of HIM, so that's not. Maybe that's what got her out of the garden, and how she ...more
