Roxanne Platt is not perfect; she’s a heroine with foibles. But she knows there’s got to be more to life than scanning groceries. In the 13 years employed as a checker, she’s seen her share of managers, but none as tyrannical as Stan Kemplehoff, her current tormentor-in-chief. His micro-managing, bullying ways have driven her to reassess her life, an examination that ...more

Roxanna Platt didn't need more proof for the adage: Timing is Everything. After her divorce, her ex-husband pulled himself together and formed a successful IT consultant firm. So when the single mother of a seven-year-old son gets fired as a grocery store checker, where she has worked for 13 years, in the worst downturn in California real estate in years, she decides to become a realtor. She passes her licensing exam on the first attempt, lands an internship with a high-profile firm where she ...more

Roxanne had me cheering her on from the first page! For me, thats what counts; I need to be able to relate to and care about the protagonist. You quickly see she is not what she appears to be, your average girl, stuck in a dead end job. She has an edge and a wit that has kept her spirit intact throughout her challenges as a single mom (something I personally can relate to). She digs deep to find her strengths and ingenuity to recreate herself and make a better life for herself and her son. The ...more

I really enjoyed this story—in fact far more than I expected. It gave me a fascinating insight into the machinations of real estate in the US (which is rather different to the UK), and I was surprised by how interesting this was. I would imagine the author has some experience in this field, which made her writing all the more realistic.
The story concerns single mum Roxanne, who is fired from her despised job as a checkout clerk and decides to train as a realtor in a depressed financial climate.

A real estate career is tougher than I thought.

A single mother embarking on a new career. Many doubts and creative solutions made this an enjoyable read. I can only hope that a real life scenario would turn out as well. Looking for more of Cynthia Hamilton's books.

I have been writing since 2000, when a collection of bizarre physical problems forced me to find a creative outlet I could pursue from bed, if it came to that. Since then, I've written several novels and two memoirs. I love creating characters and setting them down in situations to see how they react. Most of my stories spring entirely from my overly-fertile imagination. My latest—The Trouble with ...more
