I absolutely loved these stories of life in small town Marienstadt, PA. The same great characters are woven throughout all 3 stories and I know that like me, you will miss them when they're gone and won't be able to wait to meet with them again. From Sister Ursula and her snowplow, to Titus Winter learning something shocking about his ancestor from a Whiskey Bottle in the Wall to my personal favorite, the ladies of Marienstadt not wanting to give up their favorite dumpling recipes for a communit ...more

It’s no wonder that “The Whiskey Bottle in the Wall” was named Best Short Story in the 2013 eFestival of Words. It’s just one of three unforgettable tales by Kathleen Valentine that make up THE WHISKEY BOTTLE IN THE WALL: Vol. 1 – SECRETS OF MARIENSTADT, and it’s the first book of her three-volume "novel in eleven consecutive stories."

In the introduction to this book, Valentine reveals that she grew up in St. Mary’s, Pennsylvania, “surrounded by storytellers.” She obviously inherited that talent

I enjoyed this book of short stories that almost had a folklorish feel to them. Written in the same style as Kathleen's Fry Bacon. Add Onions: The Valentine Family & Friends Cookbookstories, one felt that they are being taken back to a period of time in history within a town. What is most bizarre to me though is that the town in the story is fictional...doesn't exist! The writing is so "clear" that I felt like it was a real town. Although I had some of the same issues and not being able to d ...more

Kathleen Valentine is one of my new favorite authors. I can't seem to get enough of her stories of small town Pennsylvania. This volume of stories contains three short stories about the residents of Marienstadt. Although these are fictionalized accounts, they are so well-written that you want to stop in and have a streudel at Lola's shop and stop in to The Calico Cuckoo for some fat quarters. This is "rural reading" at its finest.

I love Kathleen's books - I grew up in St. Marys and loved seeing some of the stories I grew up "published". Kathleen's tales took me back to my youth and opened the doors to long forgotten memories. Her use of our hometown and familial names spun a web I was happily caught up in. I am looking forward to the next installments.

I read a lot of thrillers, so the pace of this book was refreshing. More of a mosey than a dash. Lots of interesting characters and great stories. The location is an extra character in the stories, woven into the fabric of the tales. Excellent read. Valentine has more books/stories set in the same town with some of the same characters and I can't wait to get some more.

This book was recommended to me by a former claaamate. It is a series of short stories based on a town located in Northwest PA - St. Marys (which is my honetown) Although fictional, there are many references in the stories that are actual places in St.Marys and the area

I loved this book. It made me homesick for the time and place where I grew up. Can't wait for the next book.

hard to describe this book..it's three separate stories set in the fictional town of Marienstadt, a Pennsylvania Dutch community in the Allegheny Highlands.....The characters are all rather fascinating even if the stories may be a bit outrageous. For example, story 1 is about a long-term resident who wrecks his truck, obviously intoxicated, and runs away - they have to send someone into the woods to find him. The chief of police doesn't want him to go to prison so he sets it up for the guy to do ...more

I loved this collection of stories. I've read other books by Kathleen Valentine, but don't recall feeling the same about them. Don't get me wrong, they were good, but these are better. Maybe it's the setting, the people, their stories... The author states they're based on people and places she knew growing up, and this is clearly reflected in her portrayal of the town and its inhabitants. Beautiful Pennsylvania Dutch country, lively characters, and some interesting histories. I've moved on to th ...more

From the Allegheny Mountains where she grew up, to the Gloucester seaport where she now lives and writes, Kathleen Valentine loves nothing more than listening to the stories that people tell while sitting on front porches, gathered around kitchen tables, or swapped in coffee shops and taverns. Her collection of legends, folklore, and tall tales are woven into her fiction. The award-winning author ...more
