Reporter Joe Karns is sent to Australia to fill in for a recently retired travel editor. At the airport, he runs into Kay Clarke and others who plan to attend a science fiction convention in Melbourne. But strange things are in store for the fans during their stopover in Sydney, and Joe gets caught up in a story that his newspaper will never print, as they and a hapless guide stumble into a war between the Porovians (hairier than humans) and the Ormazdana (six-fingered giants with silver hair). ...more
I first read this when it came out back in the '70s; saw it in the library as a new arrival -- who could resist the title? Ever since, this is what I think of whenever wombats are mentioned. This summer I decided to track it down to re-read, and happy to say it holds up really well. Definitely old-school science-fiction (or more aptly in this case, scientifiction), but fun and creative and nicely written.
Charles Fort Never Mentioned Wombats (one of my all-time favorite titles!)is a sequel to Now You See It/Him/Them. They are fun science fiction/mystery adventures recursively set in the world of mid-'70s sf fandom, with many humorous in-jokes and references to the society of the time. This one is set in Australia, where mild-mannered protagonist reporter Joe Karnes runs into filker Kay Clarke and other friends from the previous book... lots of fun.
