Much like A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Life Is a Caravanserai is a stream of conscious fictionalized memoir of the author's childhood. But I enjoyed it much more than Joyce's more famous book. Life is a Caravanserai tells the story of a young girl growing up in 50s and 60s Turkey with an extended family that is always struggling for money, bound by superstition and trapped by societal expectations. There are many incredible characters with off the wall character traits and mythical s ...more

After reading one memoir about a country (Cuba) which was politically unstable ( Before Night Falls) I was very eager to dive into this memoir, which focuses on another country which had an interesting political shift but unfortunately things didn’t turn out the way I wanted them to.

The country in question is Turkey during one of its most turbulent period. During the 60’s there was the ‘end’ of the westernization of the place and military insurgencies were commonplace, which led to violence and

I thought Emine Sevgi Odamar's "Life is a Caravanserai- Has two doors I came in one, I went out the other" was okay.

The story itself is kind of interesting.... it's a series of stories told by a girl growing up in 1960's Turkey. There were some great little vignettes and there were others that were just kind of strange. The book moves along at a frenetic pace, leaping from story to story. It reminded me of listening to someone I know who has a hardcore drug habit... she talks in the exact same w

I loved this one less than The Bridge of The Golden Horn, but I suspect the translation might not be as good as the other one. I hope it's much better in German.

Emine Sevgi Özdamar (born 10 August 1946, in Malatya, Turkey), is a Turkish-German actress, director and author.

Özdamar has received a lot of recognition for her work. A lover of poetry, she found great inspiration in the works of Heinrich Heine and Bertolt Brecht, especially from an album of the latter's songs which she had bought in the 1960s in Berlin. She later decided to study with Brecht's d
