A DEVASTATING PLAQUE STALKS A SHATTERED EARTH

It was the worst catastrophe the people of Earth had ever endured. In the summer of 2000, fragments of a rogue planet slammed into Earth. Billions were killed. The impact ravaged Earth, stopping its rotation. Now, twenty-one years later, the remnants of humanity face total extinction. They live a primitive existence in a land divided into perpetual daylight, eternal twilight, and endless night. From each of these worlds comes a threat that could destroy the fragile civilization that has survived....

A young man seeks his mother in the lawless terrors of the Darkzone, only to find horrors far worse than he could have imagined. A weary wanderer returns to a haven from his past, unwittingly leading a murderer to its unsuspecting people. And an impetuous explorer searches for treasures in a long-dead city, only to bring back an even more implacable killer: a plague called the Red Shadows...

A decidedly odd but fun post-apocalyptic adventure set on a shattered Earth. RS takes place a few decades after Final Impact and while not quite a sequel, many of the surviving characters from that appear here. After 'the impacts', e.g., the remains of a planet that hit Earth, Earth itself has stopped rotating. There is, however, a narrow band at the terminus where life still thrives, running roughly down the midwest of the USA.

Perhaps the best way to describe this is a character driven, urban fantasy drama. Humanity has survived, albeit in greatly reduced numbers. The survivors has coalesced into various groups: we have a few towns, bands of 'raiders/vigilantes', packs of 'wolves' (human hunters), and finally, the vampires on the edge of the dark side. Most of the members of the previous book now live in the towns, while Joey hangs with the wolves and Naomi with the vampires. The newest members of humanity, e.g., those born after 'the impacts' are coming of age and getting restless; in a way, this is something of an odd coming of age novel.

Once again, Navarro brings us a wide cast, and frequent POVs populate the novel. Besides depicting the remnants of humanity, Navarro introduces a nasty plague deemed 'red shadows' into the mix. Basically, the plague induces internal bleeding/bruising until death, and it always ends in death. Where did it come from? Is humanity, after all the struggle thus far, still doomed? Overall, a fun read, especially for me as it was set largely in Ohio where I grew up (Columbus). In fact, one scene has a main character walking only a few blocks from where I used to live! 3.5 stars, rounding up for nostalgia. A few notes, however:

Red Shadows is a sequel to Final Impact, and is in some ways superior to the original. It's set a couple of decades after the Earth-shattering (literally) events of Final Impact, and does a surprisingly good job of picking up and tying in the previous events and showing how the world and society has changed, and what happened to the very memorable characters. New horrors and trials await, and it's another thrilling page turner with a big varied cast and sweeping action. (Aside#1: What was it with all of Yvonne Navarro's early books having paintings of cityscapes on their covers?)
(Aside #2: I've always been especially partial to this one because much of the early portion seems to be set where I actually lived when I read it. The locations could have been our house on out and down to the place where I worked. It was a real shiver!)

A bit too long, probably only a three-star read because of that, and yet the writing is so damn good
I'm bumping the rating up to four-stars.
