In a novel that is as witty as it is profound, Chris Gudgeon delivers both the story of a young man coming of age during the Balkan wars of the late 1990s and a meditation on faith, history, and love.

Zavida Zanković’s world is coming undone. Caught up in the insanity of war and the capers of a manic, larger-than-life father, Zavida awaits trial for a dizzying array of char

Chris Gudgeon's novel Song of Kosovo is a close examination of the absurdity of war told from the point of view of a reluctant combatant named Zavida Zanković. Serbian by birth, Zanković is forced to serve in the paramilitary, and during the 1999 NATO bombings witnesses his comrades performing atrocities in the name of Serbian autonomy. A story that manages to mix humour, history, hysteria and heart all into one epic page-turner of a book. The author introduces Zavida Zankovic, the deliciously deviant main character whose troubles extend much further than his criminal charges and those caused from the Bulkan war. Although the story can at times feel as mercurial and insane as Zavida's thought process, it always left me needing to know what happened next (a huge surprise twist at the end satisfied my need). All in all Gudgeon's ...more

**RECEIVED AS A FIRST READS GIVEAWAY**

I couldn't get into this book. It seemed like such an interesting idea. The manuscript is taken from letters that were found in Kosovo shortly after the war. But the story seemed to drag and never really reach a climax. And the characters weren't built to become dimensional or to get a reaction from the reader.

It offered a bit of insight into some of the smaller, social aspects of the war but wasn't very informative either.
