New Orleans policeman Ry Archard has been watching Margo DuFray for longer than he'd care to admit, and longer than is prudent, that's to be sure. Since the day he'd helped her escape from an overly amorous boy when she was just a teen, Ry hasn't been able to keep his mind off Margo. When she finally reaches legal age, Margo throws herself at Ry, to their mutual delight. But just when things were getting good, Ry ends the relationship.

Margo is left embittered, but moves on with her life as well as she can. She sings at a local restaurant, and does her best to watch out for her brother. That's easier said than done, when trouble seems to follow the DuFrays wherever they go. And now trouble seems to be here to stay. After helping her brother on a mysterious mission, Margo's brother is missing, and she is suffering from a gunshot wound. The only place she knows to go is Ry's house.

When Ry shows up to the unexpected gift of Margo in his bed, Ry doesn't know whether to haul her off to jail, a hospital, or thank God for the treat. But he does know that he needs to help Margo out of her latest mess, and keep her from coming to farther harm. But how can he keep her safe when he may be the biggest danger she faces - in more ways than one?
