Gray Preston was born into money, but he’s built his racing empire on hard work and muscle. And now that Gray has millions of fans, his senator father sends one of his aides, Evelyn Hill, to elicit Gray’s help in garnering votes for the upcoming national election. Gray wants nothing to do with his estranged father’s campaign, but Evelyn can be pretty persuasive. She’s willing to learn about racing, and maybe even get a little dirty.
Evelyn’s number-one goal is politics, which makes working with Gray difficult, because his only passion is fast cars. As she and Gray spend time together, he teaches her about the sport he loves, and she learns a lot about the man behind the wheel. The more she learns, the more she wants him. But any desire that threatens to derail the carefully laid plans for her future is a dangerous one.
With the passion Gray and Evelyn share running hotter than either imagined, one of them is going to have to compromise, or else run the risk of losing more than their hearts.

⌘ I was really looking forward to Gray's story after meeting him in Garrett's book, Thrown by a Curve. Gray and Garrett went to college together along with a couple other friends, Drew and Trevor.
⌘ Evelyn actually works for Gray's father, who he is somewhat estranged from. Evelyn wants Gray to come on board for his Dad's political campaign to help bring in voters.
⌘ Unfortunately, I didn't really feel the connection between Gray and Evelyn. Evelyn just seemed too hard and cold for me and Gray is just interested in sex. On top of that, it was a little too easy to figure out how the plot would evolve.
⌘ The sad part for me was that there was too much sex! You heard me right...too much. It wasn't until the last fourth of the book where things became meaningful and much more interesting.
⌘ I also really missed the family dynamic that the previous books had. I do get that JB was running out of siblings/cousins but that family connection was something I really enjoyed and while Garrett is married to one of the Riley's cousins, it's just wasn't enough.
⌘ The dramas are a bit contrived as well, for me! I guess I'm just looking for something a bit deeper but if you're wanting a light, sexy read, this is the book for you.
⌘ The next book is a short, Holiday Games, and it's back to Gavin and Liz from the second book and I will definitely be reading that. The two books after that are dealing with the other college roommates which I have to admit do seem interesting after reading this book.

Not my very favorite of the consistently excellent Play By Play series, but a good read nonetheless. And it features the second best cover of the whole smokin' hot series, after this , of course.:)
Gray Preston is a successful race car driver (NASCAR/ stock cars). Leanly muscled, dark hair, whiskey-colored eyes (just look at the cover model...)
Anyway, Gray is loaded, due to his inheritance from his late grandfather, and his winnings as a driver/owner. Gray is happy with his life as it stands--he's got looks, money, and women available whenever he wants them, and he's doing what he absolutely loves. But Gray has "Daddy issues". Gray's father is a prominent US Senator, who was never available to Gray as a child, and never approved of Gray's chosen career (blah blah blah). Gray and senator are practically estranged, even though Dad has tried to make amends, only to be rejected by Gray. Now Senator Dad has a chance to be the next VP of the USA, but he could use some votes. Maybe if son Gray endorsed him, his fans would throw some votes towards him and his running mate? When one of the Senator's aides shows up on his doorstep, Gray doesn't know it, but his life is about to change...
Gray...
Evelyn Hill is living her dream. The strawberry blonde beauty is a go-getter, ambitious, career-oriented, and on the rise. Working hard for Senator Mitchell Preston for the upcoming national election is her number one goal, and getting him in the White House is her top priority. Career is everything for Evelyn. Yes, she has dreams of one day having a family (as well as a comfy home with a backyard tire swing)...but that's in the future--after she accomplishes her career goals. So when she's sent to get Gray's help in getting his father some much needed votes, she's not going to let anything get in her way--not even Gray's outright refusal.
Evelyn...
Evelyn pulls in the big guns (Gray's mother) and convinces Gray to help. At first Gray's not happy with Evelyn's manipulation...but as they're forced to spend more and more time together (Evelyn travels with Gray from race to race) their initial attraction transforms into a white hot affair and mutual respect. Both enter into it with their eyes wide open--Gray doesn't want a permanent relationship, and career woman Evelyn doesn't want one either. But oh, the passion that they share...What starts out as purely physical turns into so much more...more than either of them expected. Gray and Evelyn are sooo good together--is there any way for two people with opposite goals to have a life together? Will either be willing to compromise to get what they both want and need?
I enjoyed Evelyn and Gray's story (even though politics and racing are not my two favorite things). I learned more than I wanted to about racing, but I pushed on through (and looked at the cover to get me through some boring parts):) I didn't think they had much conflict though. Each seemed reasonable and mature, they got along great together, and they were oh-so-compatible in bed. So not much angst in this story, except for Gray's feelings towards his father. The biggest question in this story was--what would happen after the election was over, and Evelyn no longer needed to work with Gray? Would either admit their feelings? Would they go their separate ways? Would Evelyn give up her career to be with Gray? Or would they make some kind of compromise?
Fans of this series know what to expect here. Hot alpha male, beautiful, determined heroine, lots of passionate sex, a life altering moment, and an eventual HEA. I would've liked to have seen Evelyn's background explored a bit more--I wish I knew her a little better. But despite that, this story was one sweet ride...even if it didn't quite live up to its cover. Looking forward to Gray's sister Caroline's story-- 4 stars
OH *SQUEAL*!!!!!!!!!!! LOOK AT THAT SMOKIN HOT MAN... ERRR.. COVER... LOL!!!! Seriously this series has the BEST covers of ANY SERIES OUT THERE!!!!!!!!
amazon--->http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009NY44Z6/?... This girls job is to post on facebook? Lol. i read this book concurrently with book 5. The books are identical with the exception of baseball versus racing. Both glorifying a sexual relationship as enough to make a marriage. Strong women, weak whiny men. If you have to chose between the two, i'd say go for the baseball one. The race car driver was hotter and he was a closet bazllionaire, so he spoiled her nicely. But the baseball one had a sweeter connection and felt more like love. Evelyn is not likable...at all. These books are easy, relaxing, beach house, fancy hotel, etc....but there is zero angst and nothing happens. Works good for me when i need to spend time with my family, its easier to put down and get the dishes done, but we all know thats not why we read is it? I dont feel bad for being honest here because while the author did a great job of painting the world of NLB and racing, there was little creativity. It was like reading the same book twice; omelette, omelette, mom calls, mom calls, lunch with hot jocks, undress, orgasms, cuddle, repeat. Of the series, book 2 is the best, it has more tension and angst because the girl was the villian in the first book and theres more passion and some domination type stuff. There is little to no kink in the other books. If your going to give this series a try, start with book 2 and see what you think of it.
I finished this and didn't feel anything. Really, unremarkable read with characters you forget as soon as you finish book. :\

::trying to form coherent sentence:: I know Jaci is known for her smoking hot covers, and her most famous is, I believe, The Perfect Play. But look at this cover!!! This man is pure perfection! He's not too bulky or butch. He is absolutely perfect! Definitely my favorite.
No way, it took me almost a month to read this book. I'm embarrassed by that lol. I picked this up at the library back in January. Let's just say I don't think the library has the best romance, and I'm thinking of no longer getting romance books from there. I thought this had a chance to be good because it's traditionally published romance from when the time self-publishing was just starting out. But I haven't enjoyed a traditionally published romance from the 2o1os or 2020s in so long; I think I should give up on them. I'm surprised romance readers even still read traditionally published romance anymore because even though the romance formula is still adhered to, there's something missing in these books and I don't know what it is.
Evelyn is so different from me that I don't know if we'd be friends. Maybe this is my bias shining through, but she seemed so perfect. The author gave her "grew up poor" as her one relatable thing. She wasn't so interesting, but she's that gorgeous, smart woman who is like the female version of a (boring) socialite/a classy Chad lol.
Evelyn is practical, resourceful, not uptight but reserved emotionally, polite, etc. But I guess it's realistic because some women are like that and they deserve love too. What am I even writing lol?
The ending was so predictable I was thrown.
It was funny for me when Gray took her to New York and how they were in the Greek sculpture at the Met when I used to go there all the time, so even though I still liked it, it was just "mill-of-the-run" for me.
The sex scenes were good, and by the end of the book, I could finally see how they are a match for each other. I found Evelyn might have been the more "masculine" partner than Gray.
In the beginning, I was confused about how this would be an erotic romance because I felt like Evelyn was too "classy" to give it up without a relationship.
The one thing I did appreciate was that Evelyn wasn't a virgin, and that wasn't even discussed at all. She was like a man's woman.
Slow start. Nothing but sex in the middle. Fast cheesy ending.
Evelyn was my big hang up. She was flat and boring. The career oriented independent woman (so we are told) was nothing but Gray's sex toy. The only way we saw her was on her back, her knees, or being carried to the bedroom in Grays strong arms. Brownie points for keeping the sex from being repetitive though. As often as it happens, Burton changed it up each time (mostly).
All Scenes meant to endear me to Evelyn felt like a huge "Wink, Wink" like it was my cue to jump on the everyone-loves-Evelyn bandwagon. She meets Stacie for the first time and Stacie repeatedly says "I like you" to Evelyn. Or Evelyn says "thank you" to someone and they gush "aww Grayson she is so polite, you should marry her".
Evelyn is a complete captain obvious. Gray tells her at one point that he has past resentment for his father. So Evelyn smartly infers that Gray is harboring resentment over the way his father treated him and so one apology can't possibly change that overnight. Then Gray stupidly thinks...Wow, she totally gets me. Well she should, you dumbass, you just told her as much! Uggggh!
With this book we are no more with the Riley family. We met Gray in the previous book, he's one of Garrett's besties.
I really liked Gray and Evelyne and how their relationship evolved. I also liked the insight into the car racing world but the last part was a bit too sweet for me and some of the interactions still seemed "forced" to me.
I have been a longtime fan of Burton, and when she started this series, my inner sports fanatic jumped up and down in glee. I was a little hesitant about reading a stock car racing book, only because I don’t understand the sport, nor do I have any desire to. But my love of all things Play-by-Play won and I gobbled this the second it hit my doorstep.
Gray is the son of a senator, and found out the hard way that the life he wanted didn’t fit into the mold his parents had in mind for him. But his love of racing won out and he became extremely successful following his dream. Now that his father has been named as the vice-presidential candidate, the sexy Evelyn shows up at his doorstep, expecting him to be ready and willing to endorse his father to rally the southern vote.
Evelyn has always had to prove herself in the male-driven political arena. The one thing she will not accept is failure, especially from Gray. She is intrigued by the son of her boss, and although she is attracted to him, is reluctant to get involved with him. Evelyn’s one goal is to get Gray to back her father’s campaign, but along the way she realizes there is more to Gray than she knew, and she falls easily for him.
I have to say, this is not my favorite book in the series, by far. I had a difficult time getting into the racing aspect of the book, and never really understood the appeal of it. Aside from that, I had some problems with the way that Gray and his family reacted toward one another, especially after some pretty scary ordeals.
I did like both Gray and Evelyn as our hero and heroine, and their romance was very well done. I liked that Gray was so laid back and easy going, and the small group of friends he has intrigued me from when we first met them in the last book. I was anxious to see how he would react to falling in love, and Gray didn’t disappoint. I love when heroes fall hard, and Gray was no exception.
I loved Evelyn, I thought she was an extremely strong character and fabulous heroine. She was successful in her career with aspirations to go even further. She felt so strongly for both Gray and his father, and she wanted so much to be able to reunite them, despite being told not to meddle. She took her job seriously, and I loved that Burton made her out to be a strong and successful heroine in her own right. I hope that we get to see more of Evelyn in future books, as I think she might be the best heroine to date. Maybe…
Like I said earlier, I had big problems with the way Gray and his family treated one another. I get that there were some hurt feelings over the horrible things they said to one another, but I didn’t really understand how Gray could be left in the dark surrounding some big issues with his father, especially given the fact that his father was a senator. That his mother and sister kept secrets as well didn’t make sense to me either, they wanted to reunite the two as well, so the secrets were kind of a big deal between them. I just didn’t like the way this was handled.
All in all I enjoyed this book. I really liked Gray as a hero, and Evelyn was a fantastic heroine. As always, Burton can be counted on to write sexy and fun relationships, and she never disappoints on that front. I am especially excited to be going back to a sport I’m really excited about for the next book: hockey.
This was more like 3.75. I liked it but there was something missing. I like Jaci Burton's writing style and her stories but the last two books were a little disappointing. I think I wanted more chemistry. I will definitely continue to read Play by play Series. The next book sounds much more interesting.
Evelyn is working for a potential vice presidential candidate and she wants his son to endorse his father and hopefully bring with that endorsement new voters. The son is Gray Preston, a very popular race car driver but too bad for Evelyn, he’s been estranged from his father for years and has no desire to help him climb the political ladder. Evelyn doesn’t take no for an answer and with a little nudge from Gray’s mom, he reluctantly agrees to help out. Evelyn is now spending all her time at the race track and falling for Gray a little bit more every day.
Gray doesn’t want anything to do with his father, a man who paid more attention to his political career when Gray was growing up than to his own son. Their relationship came to blows when Gray refused to follow in his dad’s footsteps and instead went to college to play sports. He was a star baseball player but his love was on the race track and once he received his grandfather’s inheritance, he started his own racing team and is on pace in the standings to win the season. He doesn’t want to help his dad now, but after a talk with his mom and understanding how much this would mean for her and the causes she supports, Gray agrees and Evelyn starts working on understanding Gray and his sport better and connecting that to his father and his political career in the hopes that all of Gray’s fans will turn into votes.
Gray and Evelyn have chemistry from the start and it’s only a matter of time before they’re in the bedroom (or the kitchen or the living room or up against the wall)! If sexy times in a book is your thing, then look no further. It was actually something that seemed to take away from the overall story a little for me here. There’s a lot of sex, more so than in the previous books, at least it seemed that way to me. More than a few times another sex scene would start up and I thought, really? Again? I just wanted more story, more with Gray and his parents, more with Gray and his best friends, more relationship building between him and Evelyn and it felt like those storylines didn’t go as deep as I’d have liked.
There is very little angst here, a little bit at the end regarding how these two people, whose careers mean so much to them both, can make a relationship work. Of course they get a happy ending, but I sort of still wonder how they’re making their relationship work. Maybe an epilogue would have helped to see just how it’s working for them.
I always love the other relationships Jaci Burton brings to this series and this book is no different. I loved the play between Gray and his best friends. It was fun to read and it helped develop the characters a bit more and set up their stories. I also liked Evelyn’s relationship with Gray’s sister. She’s an interesting character and has a history with one of Gray’s best friends that’s not completely in the past. I can’t wait to see that play out on page.
Ultimately, this was a nice read, but I can’t say it’s my favorite in the series. I can’t believe I’m going to say that there were too many sex scenes, but there were for me. It took away from building up Gray and Evelyn’s relationship and I wanted more romance, more woo’ing between them. I did enjoy Gray’s story with his parents, specifically his father and seeing that get resolved. It’s a sexy read, a fun read, just not one that stood out for me. But I will definitely keep coming back for more to see what Burton gives us next with these sexy sports heroes.
From the minute I met Gray in THROWN BY A CURVE, I've been dying for his book. There was just something about how this man sat at that lodge drinking with his best friends that had me. While Gray
Grayson Preston is a star of the NASCAR circuit. He's kept his racing life very separate from his personal life because of a falling out with his father. However, with the Presidential race heating up that wall he built between work and personal comes crashing down when political aide, Evelyn Hill, becomes a thorn in Gray's side and the only woman he can't lives without.
As I said above, I loved Gray and so looked forward to his story. Most of it lived up to what I had built up in my mind. Gray appeared to be a laid back kind of guy, but he was so much more and one that would do anything for those that he loves (both his family and his friends). He has a lot of issues when it comes to his father. We know their big falling out came from Gray choosing a path that was not what his father wanted and some pretty harsh things being said. So while he hasn't spoken to his father in eight years, despite his father's attempt to contact him, he never cuts himself off from his mother or sister. And regardless of how he might act towards his father or say, you could see that Gray was a man that loves his family and will do anything for them.
Then there was Evelyn. Gray was firmly in the camp that he wasn't going to settle down. He'd hook up with a woman to satisfy his sexual needs, but he doesn't do a relationship or fall in love. Evelyn crashes into his life with her own vow that she wasn't looking for a relationship, which he thought was perfect. But you could tell that Evelyn was going to be a game changer for Gray. Despite what he said, Gray became that alpha male that absolutely refuses to let his woman out of his sight or out of his life.
Evelyn was a strong woman, more like Alicia Riley from THROWN BY A CURVE than Liz from CHANGING THE GAME. She was determined to make something of herself, despite what others may have said about her when she was growing up. And while she may say she doesn't want a relationship, she know very early on that Gray was going to be a game changer for her. He would tell her that she could have a family and her career aspiration and made her believe that she could. That was something no one had ever done for her and it was one of the first things that won her over.
The romance between Gray and Evelyn was fun, sweet and hot all at the same time. And while they were hot, I was really hoping Gray was going to be down and dirty like Mick, Gavin and Ty. In the earlier Play-by-Play series books, we got a great story between the characters with a lot of hot, dirty sex. I enjoyed what Jaci Burton gave us with Gray and Evelyn, but I have a feeling these two could have seriously been down and dirty and I really missed that they weren't.
This is still one of my favorite series and one that I can't wait to get my hands. Jaci Burton still manages to create great characters that readers fall in love with and who beg you not to put down the book until you get to the last page.
I’ve been anxiously awaiting Gray’s story since he appeared in THROWN BY A CURVE. Why? Well, the stock car driver thing for one. Having read a whole series (by Erin McCarthy) that centers around that sport, I already had a soft spot for that. I couldnt wait to see what Jaci would do. And as always, Jaci delivers and then some.
ONE SWEET RIDE is not just the story of a stock car driver. There are so many layers to Gray that we get to slowly see. His father is a politician so there’s a lot of that in this book as well. Especially when Evelyn turns out to be working for his father’s campaign and assigned to get the problematic son on board with supporting his dad and doing some media promo for the campaign.
Gray and his father have issues. Issues that come from Gray following his dreams in what appeared to be (and was for a while) against his dad’s wishes. Their relationship is strained to say the least.
When sexy Evelyn is basically glued to his side to help work with him in his dad’s best interest (she works for him after all) he’s very conflicted. He wants her more than any other woman, but he also admires her ambition and drive. However, she’s so deep in a world that has left a sour taste in his mouth for a long time.
Gray was absolutely delicious! I don’t know if he will take any top spot for fave hero in this series but he is definitely hot and sweet. Loyal to his friends and family. Respectful and supportive of his tough girl as well. He doesn’t try to keep Evelyn down, but lets her fly and reach for her dreams. Even when that means less time for him or a harder relationship to handle.
This book again brings back the feel of “family” by way of the friendship between this new group of guys. Gray and his friends are like a family and their interactions feel much like the Riley family used to feel. I look forward to their easy banter and the way they relate to each other. They may tease one another but in the end they’ll be there no matter what. I cannot wait to read more of that.
This book also gives us glimpses into the next two heroes and let me tell you…I AM DYING to get my paws on both! *ehem* The books, I mean, of course.
I haven't read a book in this series for some time and now I know why I have stopped reading this series.
I just couldn't get into it. I have read it or skipped some pages and completely didn't care about the plot or the characters. The book is just boring. There are tones of sex which is common for this author but even those sex scenes are all somewhat similar and passionless. I generally liked Gray more than ... what is her name? well, you see the problem, I have just finish the book and I have no idea about the heroine's name.
Also, I'm disappointed with the outcome of the situation with Gray's father. Everything is so easy and manageable. It's difficult to believe that he just changed so completely and that Gray was wrong all the time. And that he forgives his father just like that and we have a happy, happy ending. Like I said, that is too easy and maybe even naïve. I'm really dissatisfied with this part.
And the final situation with Evelyn (I have looked up her name) is annoying as well. She is angry with Gray for some really stupid thing but it is him who is said to make a mistake and it is him who tries to work the things out. The only thing she has to do is to say 'I do'.
I will probably read the next books in this series because I like their MC that I get to know in this story.
Wow this was just boring. I loved the earlier books in this series but the last two, meh. The characters had no chemistry and I just wasn't interested in their story. Still love Jaci Burton but this one just didn't do it for me.
As per usual like we are used with, Jaci Burton delivers again another amazing book in the Play by Play series. I absolutely loved this book, from the story line, the plot, the chemistry between the characters and the Hot Sex scenes. Just Awedome.
perfecta para alegrarle el día cuando uno no quiere ni pensar !!! Los libros de Jaci Burton me gustan porque no tienen mucho drama y al final uno sabe que los protagonistas van a terminar juntos
Jaci Burton is taking her sports themed series away from the Riley family and amongst friends.. Another author taking us into a subseries (my new word) But let me tell you, this book holds true to Jaci's sports themed series and sizzles.. (trying to think of a race car analogy but am totally lost..)
One Sweet Ride is book five in Ms. Burton's Play by Play series and each one seems to be better than the last. As a girl who grew up in a sports centered household, I get a total kick out of these individuals.. people who seem to have a love and passion for the sports around them. It's fun to put strong women in an atmosphere that is traditionally run by men and the world of NASCAR is at the top of that list!!
Evelyn Hill is smart, sexy and oh so smooth.. she has a job to do and no one and no thing is going to stop her. So when she enters the world of NASCAR to convince her boss' estranged son to step back into the fold she is stunned when he turns her down and walks away.. Not a woman to let something like the word no, get in her way.. Evelyn calls in the big brass (mom) and before she knows it her engines are running and she has no clue how to stop this ride.
Gray Preston walked away from his father when he was forced to choose between the life he wanted and the life his father wanted for him. Years later he hasn't forgiven the man and no way is he going to go on the campaign trail no matter how attracted he is to his father's aide. Life is complicated enough on the NASCAR circuit and no way does he want to let the man who disowned him use the life he has created for his benefit (a lot of pronouns there.. he one.. Gray, him... Gray, he two...Gray, his Dear old Dad)
Sweltering, sensuous sensation!! family dynamics and careers collide! What a great story.. love comes in so many different forms and to watch a couple come together in such dynamic situation was simply fabulous. Gray has so much to learn about life and forgiveness, can he manage to forgive his father and discover the man he has become? Can Evelyn find a way to love Gray without destroying her career? Can either of them figure out that they need to work together and compromise?
These two are both the go big or stay at home types.. that means grand gestures and fun stuff.. but they don't always listen to each other and their hearts.. Jaci is writing a beautiful series here and one worth spending some time with.. Even if you don't enjoy sports.. every woman has a secret crush on at least one athlete.. admit it...
If you're already a fan of this series, you like this bk. Decent story (yep, another story about race car driving that my snob self actually liked...not the red neck story I envisioned when race car themes pop up). I liked wealthy, sexy, race car driver Gray, a worthy Hero wanting to have his own career in spite of what his politico dad always wanted. Eleanor was a likeable career focused heroine, working for Gray's dad, who wasn't sure if a career and a family would ever be in her future. These 2 had the steam and kept my attention up until almost the very end. Throughout the story I was wondering just how these 2 careers focused lovers could possibly work out in the long haul. After that entire wait there's a disappointing quickie HEA that was rather weak and unbelievable with no deets on exactly how this long distance relationship would actually work.
Liked the story with Gray/Evelyn but the family storyline had me calling bs. Gray and his dad, Preston, the illustrious Senator who's making a run for Vice Present, are estranged. Gray's dad wanted to extend the olive branch, trying to mend fences with Gray by showing up at one of Gray's practice races. Gray spots him after his race and Preston is surrounded by the media. The guy claims he's just there to see his son race. Really? If he wanted it just to be about Gray, how about trying to show up incognito...the ole ball cap pulled low and dark shades, no press coverage. If the guy had truly been trying to mend his relationship with Gray he waited 8 years to finally show up at a race?!? Puhleeze! Doesn't appear to be much effort to me, that is until he needs Gray's fan base as potential voters in his upcoming VP election. Sorry JB, total bullshit.
I did get some satisfaction when Gray remained confused and angry after the inevitable big confrontation with his dad. Evelyn sympathizes with "years of indifference don't just disappear with one apology". She tries to console Gray thinking his dad had years to make up for. NS Sherlock! I know you're not surprised that I'd have made the dad work for it. I have an extreme dislike for stories about poor family relations with years of unhappiness that get a quick fix before the bk ends. Yea, yea, a happy ending and all that jazz, I get it. And there is a reconciliation here but thank goodness it's not syrupy sweet.
Soooo..overall just an okay read in my opinion. What could have been 4.0 stars drops to 3.0 stars.
Well after much anticipation waiting for this book to release, I can officially tell you…One Sweet Ride is one hell of a sweet book. The queen of sexy romance has once again delivered a sultry sizzling story filled with kick ass characters, immense family drama, and heartwarming true love.
Evelyn’s job is to find the best way to integrate Gray into his father’s campaign, not her heart, and certainly not her bed. As time progresses and the sparks ignite between these two it’s impossible to keep their desires bottled up. They are explosive together. Gray is caring and passionate about pleasing her, and Evelyn is just as giving. They know what they share between the sheets is just a temporary thing. He is traveling with the racing circuit 10 months out of the year and she is chasing the political campaign all over the country. Neither is in a position to give a relationship what it needs. As time progresses and they learn more about each other and ultimately fall in love saying goodbye doesn’t seem to be the answer. They have to make some sacrifices and some lifestyle adjustments, but they learn that true love is worth any price.
There is a lot going on in this book. We don’t just get a blazing hot love story; we get a tale about family and forgiveness. It’s packed with fantastic side characters that bring out humor and adds a layer of realism. We get treated to a lot of compassion and a lot of compromise as they learn to openly communicate. It’s so easy to lose yourself in their story and get completely pulled right into their world.
I liked it much better than the previous 2. Evelyn was smart, though not stuffy. Gray was privileged but unspoilt, totally prejudiced against his father for good reasons. I liked the way their relationship developped and how both slowly realize they cannot do without the other, though do not wish to imprison the other or cause heartbreak. The secondary characters were also interesting. The story line was good. One moment was extremely moving when the group of friends visited the couple who had taken care of them while they were in college and who had been strong parental figures to all of them. Well it would have really deserved a full 4 stars, had there been a few less hot scenes, as those felt too similar to one another and did not bring anything new to the story or to the H/h relationship.
It has been a while since the last time I swirl in sports romance and this one is not bad at all! Plus, Play by Play is one of my guilty pleasures, what a horror if I missed it.
Gray and Evelyn are perfect for each other. Loved Gray because he's a good guy and very compassionate man. Loved Evelyn because she's easily fascinated with something and looks like enjoying life as much as possible. This attraction between them, it's huge and intense eventhough it happened really fast. Only a little fight happened between them which I'm glad because I don't fancy angst-y.
Definitely enjoyed learning about cars! I love cars. And definitely a big NO on politics. Skimmed most of it because I got bored.
Next book out February next year. That's a long wait. Read on your own peril.
Play by Play #6 Gray Preston is a race car driver/team owner which he built by himself. His father is a senator but they do not get along. His father sent Evelyn Hill to convince Gray to help him get the vice-presidential nomination. Gray refuses and Evelyn calls his mother who flies in to convince Gray to do it for her. He says he will help his mother. But Evelyn misunderstands and starts putting out press releases saying he's backing his father all the way. Gray gets angry. Evelyn and Gray have a fling and she gets him to help with the campaign but along the way things change. Is it for the better?
Gray is a very lovable character but he was very hurt by his father when he was a teen. He needs to heal from that. Being with Evelyn is good for him.
This is the first book in the Play by Play series that doesn't star a Riley as one of its main leads, and while I kind of missed getting to see how everybody else is doing, I still absolutely loved One Sweet Ride! I loved Gray and Evelyn! Their chemistry was fantastic and so, so, so sexy!!! I also loved their banter and the easy going relationship that they quickly fell into! I also have a newfound attraction to race car drivers. ;) haha I love this series and have loved every single book in it so far...and I don't think I'll ever stop loving them. I can't wait for the next one, Melting the Ice! ;D
Very little chemistry between the main characters, no real obstacles to overcome and the sex is repetitive and tedious.
Gray’s problematic relationship with his father has potential but is underdeveloped and the resolution is predictable and contrived.
Aside from her job and ambition, we know next to nothing about Evelyn’s background and life. The secondary characters are poorly fleshed out and only seem to be mentioned as couples for additional books in the series.
All in all, a lackluster addition to a so-so series.
I could stare at this cover all day long. But whats inside the cover is so much better. I absolutely loved Gray and Evelyn! Jaci Burton did a wonderful job writing this book, its like i could feel the chemistry between Gray and Evelyn as i read the book. Evelyn was such a strong character and i instantly fell in love in the first chapter. Overall this was a great book and is definitely one that i will take the time to read over and over.
