Driving Home: My Unforgettable Super Bowl Run

Rate this book
Driving My Unforgettable Super Bowl Run breaks down Jerome's final professional football season game-by-game, culminating with victory at Super Bowl XL while providing an inside look at Jerome's relationships with teammates like Ben Roethlisberger and Hines Ward, his parents Gladys and John, and his daughter Jada. In what was to be the final season of his career, Jerome Bettis chose to keep a journal for the first time, and it was indeed serendipitous since it ended up being the most dramatic end to a Hall of Fame career with a Super Bowl win in his hometown of Detroit. This guidebook captures the fairytale ending to a remarkable career.

Review title: Take the Bus to Detroit

It is hard to believe nearly 15 years have passed since the Steelers won SB XL inside Detroit's Ford Field while a winter storm raged outside. But the storm couldn't stop the Bus-- Jerome Bettis, the big wide body running back for the Pittsburgh Steelers--from helping lead the team to their fifth Super Bowl victory in his home town and his final game. This coffee table book is Bettis's account of his final year in words and pictures.

The story starts with the Steelers loss to the Patriots in the AFC Championship game after the 2004 season, when Bettis first considered retirement. But when Ben Roethlisberger promised Bettis a Super Bowl win if he gave the team one more year, Bettis took him up on it. Bettis goes through the season game by game as the Steelers lost key early games and had to win out at the end of the season to secure a wild card spot. Bettis tells of his aches and pains that kept him out of several games, and in sidebars talks about his teammates and coaches like Bill Cowher, Hines Ward, and Roethlisberger. He writes about his family (wife Trameka and young daughter Jada) and his parents and their role in his life. Bettis is a gregarious and talkative person and it shows through in the writing; while a ghostwriter is credited, it still reads like Bettis's voice.

The included DVD follows Bettis day by day through Super Bowl week with brief narrated segments on his life and career. The short DVD does not include any game highlights or interviews with Jerome and doesn't add much to the book.

If you are a Steeler fan and remember Bettis's role in that Super Bowl season (including his goal line fumble in the playoff game against the Colts that nearly cost the team the game), this is a fun recap of that year from his words and pictures.

I bought this book because I loved the Bus and the story of his superbowl year. What I wasn't expecting is how good the book actually was. The book reads easily and clearly and provides a really unique perspective into the Steelers world from one of the key players on the team. A must-read for any Steelers fan, or anyone who just wants to experience the range of emotions a pro footballer goes through as the season unfolds.

Very quick read, with lots of quality picture. Really what I expected for an autobiography by an NFL star. I enjoyed that the book starts with the previous season's loss to the New England Patriots and follows the Steeler great through the off-season and the entire following season (game-by-game). I enjoyed the old pictures from Jerome's days in Detroit as well.

There may be other fairy tale endings in sports.....but you can't tell me they are any better than Jerome Bettis' Super Bowl Win w/ the Steelers in his hometown....May equal it...but can't beat it.
