Alex Redcliff is a spy. The only problem now is that he is a spy with an opium addiction to help suppress his terrifying nightmares of events he doesn’t want to remember. In Georgiana Appleby he finds his salvation, sent to help him recover from his addiction, Georgiana has quite a few secrets about herself and her past she wants to keep hidden.

I liked the character of Georgiana but I wanted someone a little bit more strong willed personally. She takes on the whole world defying the conventions of the time but the minute she is in a room alone with Alex all of her propriety goes out the window and she becomes unable to resist kissing his lips. Alex had that slightly jerky quality about him (it could have been the opium addiction) but he recovered his good qualities by his actions. I didn’t think their hate then sudden irresistible attraction was plausible.

HISTORICAL ROMANCE WITH A DIFFERENCE

Alexander Redcliffe believes he murdered his friend. But he has no memory of the event. Consumed with grief and guilt he suffers from terrible nightmares. Opium is his drug of choice.Georgiana Appleby is to treat Alex for his addiction. Attraction flares between them

Beautifully and sensitively written this historical romance stands out from the crowd. With fully rounded characters and a Stirling plot make this a must read. Alex was very sympathetically written. While Georgiana was a tough no nonsense character, strong and determined. With the added bonus of the romance between them, and the riddle of what really happened to Alex's friend. This is a recommended read.

Georgiana Appleby is a down on her luck gentry. She has no family. Her father was a doctor and he taught her how to treat and cure addiction. Georgiana has been hired to work with Mr. Redcliff.

"Being unwanted wasn't a new experience for Georgiana in her professional capacity as curer of opium addicts."

Mr. Redcliff was very rude. He refused to sit down with her and when he finally did, he ordered her to leave. When that didn't work, he treated her like a second class citizen within his home.

"The difference with Mr. Redcliff was that it was't one of his loved ones who'd commissioned her. it was a public servant - the man who'd coordinated his spying activities, and therefore arguable the person responsible for Mr. Redcliff's current predicament."

Sir Oswyn Crisp is the man who helps run the English spies. He has blackmailed Georginana into her services for Mr. Redcliff. Stangely, neither Redcliff nor Georgiana can stand him.

Mr. Alex Redcliff has been a British spy for several years. He recently came back from France and has resigned his post. While in France, Redcliff lost a very close friend of his...another spy was killed and he feels very responsible for the man's death. While there, he suffered an injury that has since healed but the attending doctor prescribed opium and he has become addicted. In order for Sir Crisp to hire Redcliff back on, he needs him to be clean. This is where Georgiana comes in.

Although I found this book to be enormously fictitious and no where near what would ever occur in polite society, the concept of treating addiction at this time is interesting.

I feel like people who have drug addiction in their families or personal history would not enjoy this book. Redcliff is an addict but he is in denial about it and he really doesn't care. He doesn't want to change. Georgiana is supposed to be the drug treatment adviser but she's not very successful. However, the book discusses things that can be sensitive if you have lived this road and I feel like the topic and the way the author has written it, would be offensive or just not to your liking.

There were several times when I felt like Georgiana had no idea what she was doing. I realize that at this time drug treatment was unheard of and I question if it was actually around at this point, but by the books standpoint, Georgiana and her father's work was in its infancy and so it comes off the page like she a loon.

Georgiana's father had a barony. I feel like someone of that status would never become a doctor. The author doesn't tell the reader much about her father. So there could be circumstances to explain this but on the surface, it seems ridiculous. Since Georgiana has no family left to support her, she claims to need to work to survive. She has chosen to go into service. She is poor. Sadly, society would look at her as tarnished because of her profession.

Going with how Georgiana is poor, she still has a maid. This seems far fetched to me. The book talks about how her maid was very ill and could not travel with her to Mr. Redcliff's home. This poses several problems. How can she afford a maid, and it seems terribly convenient not to have a chaperone.

The hero and heroine rival with each other throughout most of the book. There theatrics were not very entertaining. Eventually, the two attempt to seduce each other to get what they want. Georgiana wants Mr. Redcliff to undergo the treatment so she can leave and go home. Mr. Redcliff wants Georgiana to leave him alone and leave his house. Through this force of wills, there sprouts a relationship. This I was unable to support. It just isn't the best option for love to sprout under and it questions truth and trust.

Overall, this book is the opposite of romance. There was non here. The total lack of historically accurate circumstances just kept adding up. The author was very repetitious in her writing. The characters weren't very likable. Georgiana's feelings became very backwards thinking and I just couldn't support her. This was a terrible book. I didn't enjoy the supposed distinction between want and need. It was just wrong. The conclusion of the mystery was a let down. I found the language to be worthless and lame. This book is no where near historically accurate. This book is just fluff smut. I cannot recommend.

Content: strong language and sex scenes.

Not for me.

So I know I’m not the target audience for this type of novel, and I only read it because I like some of the author’s other work. But I can’t help but find Surrender to be a little problematic.

The mystery about what happened in Switzerland was interesting, and was the only reason I finished. But Alex’s behaviour throughout made him a not very likeable character. I know he has the whole opium thing going on. But the way he treats Georgiana cannot be explained away by addiction alone.

Others might like it, but I found it problematic, and using tropes we shouldn’t be normalising.

Loved this!!

This was an earlier work of Ms. Archers but as with all of her other pieces of work, it was exceptional! Captivating and well constructed this story grabbed my heart and I couldn't not cheer for the characters. From beginning to end, I was invested and it was terribly hard to put my Kindle down. There are some steamier scenes which her newer work excludes, just putting that out there as some ppl are sensitive. This book is well worth your time, heart and money ♡

I LOVED this book! Seriously, it was so good that it now has a place of honor on my list of favorite historical romances. Surrender was a brilliant historical romance that was a little darker than what we normally see in the genre. And that uniqueness is what made it so good.

This book is about addiction. Alex, in an effort to rid himself of horrible nightmares about the night his friend died, takes opium to sleep. In true addict fashion, he claims that he doesn't have a problem and he only needs the opium to sleep. Georgiana is an unofficial physician who learned the craft under the tutelage of her father and specializes in curing addiction. Most of the book is spent with these two battling with Alex's addiction. So, that casts a darker shadow onto this book. And that made it refreshingly different. The only book I can think of that is similar to this is Hero of My Heart, where addiction also plays a large role and that's one of my favorite HR so the comparison shows how much I enjoyed this book. Since historical romances are usually light and somewhat fluffy, having one that is darker and heavier is an interesting change.

Georgiana is a very strong and admirable heroine. She is tough with enough perseverance to conquer anything, including someone's addiction. She doesn't give up and never backs down. I really liked her. I thought she was a great character that I could really support. If I had one issue with her, it was that she let her old demons almost ruin the possibility of a relationship between her and Alex. But, it wasn't a huge deal and, for the most part, I thought she was a perfect character.

Alex was a complicated hero. I thought his addiction might make me see him as a weak character, but knowing why he turned to opium, I couldn't really blame him. The night his friend died haunts him, even more so because he doesn't remember exactly what happened. However, his addiction brought out some ugly parts of his personality. Despite that, he's a good man at heart. Sweet, protective, and a gentleman at heart. Even in the depth of desperation for opium, he couldn't bring himself to harm anyone. And, after he finally came to a realization that he needed to stop taking opium, his complete determination to end his addiction made me come to truly respect his character. After seeing his growth from a desperate addict to a healthy and drug free gentleman, I ended up really adoring him. Like Georgiana, he was a perfect(ly flawed) character.

The romance was intense. Not only in the extremely hot sparks between them, which there was plenty of, but also in their emotional attachment to each other. Throughout the book, it was increasingly obvious how devoted these two were to each other. An intense mix of sweet and spicy, the romance was wonderful.

The plot was fast paced and I was hooked the entire way through. The mystery of what actually happened the night Alex's friend died had me riveted and the thrill of wondering who was after Alex kept me on the edge of my seat. And the ending was lovely, sweet, and utterly perfect.

Surrender was a brilliant historical romance, one that I completely adored. Lovers of the genre, if you want something different than the norm, then you have to read this book. It was absolutely wonderful.

First thing's first: when I got this book from NetGalley, I would swear it had a different cover, a woman in a pale pink dress, but I can't find that cover any more. But, oh well. I liked that cover better than this one.

Now, onto the story. Alex has been a spy for many years, but after a mission goes disasterously wrong, he believes he killed someone and has retreated into smoking opium to avoid the nightmares that are plaguing him of the final events in that mission. He believes he's not addicted, but of course he is. His spymaster blackmails Georgiana (the daughter of a physician who had success in treating opium addiction who's taken up the cause herself) into taking Alex on as a patient. The spymaster needs/wants to know the truth about that final mission and believes that Alex will want to return to spying once he's recovered.

I really liked Georgiana and her unusual career path for the period. She was a woman, yes, but she chose to help people with a drug addiction (very unusual, I would say). She made a mistake with one patient and that's what gets used against her to take on Alex, despite Alex's attempts to get rid of her quickly. She's a strong character who has a lot to offer.

Alex I didn't like quite so much, but he was also a bit of a jerk from time to time. Blame the opium addiction (I do), or whatever, but Georgiana got a lot of crap from him before they started edging toward getting together. And lord, did that take a while! Which made for a nice change. They were attracted, of course, but Georgiana had her reasons for not wanting to look at Alex as anything other than a patient, and Alex of course had his drug addiction which was more powerful than his attraction to Georgiana...at first.

I love the fact that, by the end, Georgiana didn't let Alex replace his addiction for opium with an addiction for her. She cleared out of the area and forced him to work through his issues without her adding to the mix. He had to want her for her, not as a replacement for something else.

The secondary cast of characters rounded out the book (Alex's little sister and his aunt were staying with Alex for most of the book). The aunt was your typical socialite who thoroughly disapproved of Georgiana staying in the townhouse with Alex and went out of her way to remind Georgiana that she was not their social equal and she shouldn't even think about making a move on Alex. The niece was a hoyden of course, and got into trouble as part of the overall spy plot. Typical sixteen year old, really, impressionable.

The revelation as to the ultimate villain did surprise me. I sort of dismissed the possibility and never doubted that dismissal until they were unmasked at the end.

The writing flowed smoothly enough. I just wasn't as drawn to this book as I would have needed to be to give this any higher of a rating. Don't get me wrong - it's a good book, just not (for me) a great one. I will put Ms. Archer on my ever-growing list of authors I like though, definitely.

Thank you Ms. Archer and thank you NetGalley for letting me read this!

This book does what it says on the box. It fits genre expectations, with an added detail of addiction, which I liked.

I am not familiar with the time period, but some quick looking into opium addiction reveals the facts communicated in this book to be correct as far as I can see.

Yeah, I like it when writers get their facts right.

I also liked the characters, and I found them to be believable and interacting with each other in a believable way.

Although I thought the love scenes were well done, I do wonder if people of their class in that time would have been so quick to give in.
Also, I'm not sure how the two characters can still be dithering about their commitment having slept with each other. It felt a bit artificial. I would have preferred the sex to come later in the story, so the sexual tension would not have to be kept up artificially with the (to me) slightly annoying "I'm not worth his/her love" type of dithering.

But that's a small thing. Mostly, this is an enjoyable read.

Not that there are some valuable things in this book, most of all because it is not the usual regency romance with the virginal and soppy debutee and the usual inveterate bachelor, who instead gives almost immediately; my problem is that I have always some difficulty when the two characters go from loathe each other to the strongest passion, lust and love.

THANKS TO NETGALLEY AND C.J.ARCHER FOR THE PREVIEW!

This was a really good story with a plot involving drug addiction; something I have only run across a few other times, yet I am sure was much more prevalent than novels would have us believe. Georgiana was certainly a different type of heroine, a "nurse" who specializes in working with patients who want to overcome their opium addiction. Alex was a product of the spy game and was "played" by the spymaster quite well. The interaction between the two characters was intimate, not only in bed, but in their handling of Alex's addiction. I highly recommend and will be reading others by the author now that I have discovered her.

Alexander Redcliff is a spy who has turned to opium in order to escape from his nightmares about the death of his friend and fellow spy. Georgiana Appleby is employed to help Alex overcome his addiction and remember the events that occurred. The novel shows the initial struggle to convince Alex that he must overcome his addiction, combined with a growing infatuation of each other that complicates Alex's path to recovery.

A very enjoyable book, the addiction aspect means the book holds so much more than the romance itself, adding a very interesting angle to the standard approach to historical romance.

Stories with strong heroines who have a profession and do not need to rely on anyone for assistance are a big draw for me. Georgiana is that woman and her career as a physician puts her in a position to help Alexander with his addiction. Will he be able to slay his demons and give her what she wants and needs? This story provided a range of emotions for me, answered my questions, added some surprises and left me in peace with a content smile on my face.

Thank you NetGalley for providing this book to read.

This was an enjoyable read. I liked that the book had a female physician during the Regengcy Era and that she specialized in drug addiction. Her patient, Alex, was a spy and dealing with addiciton to opium due to nightmares of a disasterous mission that resulted in the death of his friend. There was a mixture of emotions and unexpected revelations.

I received this book as an ebook free from the author through LibraryThing in exchange for an honest review. This book is regency historical fiction. There are some additional twists with a live-in female physician treating a male patient with an opium addiction. There is also murder and attempted murder, spies, sex and romance, and hidden secrets. As I read this book I especially enjoyed the author’s creative ability. This was a good read.

Loved the originality if not the overall book. Great story, that to me was made up with decent characters (although not my favourite). This is no where near the normal regency era story that is so often presented, which can be either bad or good depending on preference. For me it worked out nicely and will be looking to reading some of Archer's other books.
