Victorian Ghost Stories

The blood chilled in my veins. Close by us, at our feet, there was a sigh. Not a groan, not a moaning, not anything as definite as that, it was just a sigh, a horrible sigh, emptying its misery into the night. . .

Six spine-tingling stories have been dug up from the grave and dusted down for this classic selection of haunting, howlings and horrors. Enter the world of ghouls and ghostly apparitions, as the dead return to torment the living.

Oktobra pēdējās dienas vakaram ļoti piestāvēja.

Vienmēr tās sievietes jūt kaut kādas ļaunas priekšnojautas, bet tie vīrieši nekad neklausās, un aizrauj postā visu ģimeni.

Spoku stāsti kaut kā...pavilka mazliet vairāk kā šausmu stāsti. :)

This book was pretty good, I love ghost stories but I have to say that these weren’t as interesting as I thought. Overall I would recommend people to read it.

The 2 stars rating is just because horror is not my cup of tea. The book is actually good. The horror is subtle and it's well written. It wasn't that scary but you can vividly imagine the fear that haunts the characters.
The book consists of 4 stories:
1. The Open Door - about a ghost that haunted a door
2. A Long Distance Call - about a long distance call from the after life
3. The Shadow of a Ghost - about a ghost who takes revenge on the man who killed him
4. The Tall Woman - about a phobia to a woman that turns out to be some sort of harbinger of death.

I didn't find this book scary or frightening at all. At best it could be could unnerving.
However, that's not to say I didn't enjoy the short stories included. While, lacking the important scare factor, they were well written with great accompanying illustrations and believable plots, almost as if you could encounter such a story.

Simplified versions (much in the vein of the Dean's Classics I read as a child) of some well known tales by writers such as Edith Nesbit and a very quick read. Most of the tales were familiar but nevertheless, enjoyably rewritten and a good introduction to the real thing. Nice charity shop find.

These were actually pretty good scary stories. I don't like terrifying. I just like a good old-fashioned ghost story and that is what these were.

Šiem stāstiem tiešām ir tāda "spoku stāsti nometnē" atmosfēra. Tie bija jauki, un pareizajos apstākļos var pat bišķi uzdzīt šermuļus arī cilvēkam, kuram ir 19 gadu.
