I never thought I would like this as much as I did... and honestly if it hadn't been written by Kelly Oram I probably would never have given it a shot. Why? Well obviously I was afraid from the title that the book would be super preachy and while I have nothing against someone waiting for marriage, I didn't exactly want a book judging someone who didn't. Luckily for me Kelly Oram seemed to know this and she managed to create a book that makes Val's virginity the focal point the entire time (and I mean literally: the entire book centered on a campaign based on her encounter with Kyle) and yet it never once got preachy. Of course it brought up both sides -I mean, how can it not with a title like that?- but it never felt overdone. I would recommend this book to a college student craving a good romance and a 6th grade girl in the same heart beat? Kelly Oram's writing is the definitition of a perfect YA romance, and even though not much happens in this book the tension is HOT.

So many reasons to like this book, but my favorite parts, of course, were everything to do with Kyle Hamilton -and especially his song lyrics:

I'm sorry, how can you not fall in love with a rock star who makes up this song just for you? Or how about this blog post:

I loved that Val was independent and strong and not easily swayed (though there were certain moments she was, er, tempted) and that the entire book literally capitalized off their love-hate tension-filled relationship. Then of course there was that ending:



I know this book has a sequel told in Kyle's POV from that final scene forward (and I will, of course, read it) but I don't even think it is truly needed. That ending was P.E.R.F.E.C.T. >>>A lot of people might have been upset that: 1) Kyle and Val didn't get together after the first concert of his big tour, 2) that it took them like 5 years of separation before Kyle was going to change his ways ...but I found their ending incredibly refreshing and believable. If Kyle had suddenly changed character so soon the book would have become preachy (along the lines of: "Hey Good Girl, You Really Can Change A Bad Boy") and by having them take time to grow and develop and then appear on that talk show? It made sense. It was believable. I loved it. You know why I loved that twist so much? Because it reminded me of how much crap people gave Bachelor Brad Womack when he (in my opinion very bravely) decided to pick neither final woman on his season of The Bachelor. It takes guts to be honest and not tell someone what they want to hear. It's better than leading them on. So Kyle Hamilton I applaud you for telling Val you couldn't promise to be abstinent for her -especially during the height of fame and fortune. You loved her but you knew that environment wouldn't keep you faithful. Later on of course you were able to take on a different lifestyle and grow, then you were ready to give her that pledge. Bravo.

Ich gehöre zu den Leuten, die bisher noch nicht "Cinder und Ella" von Kelly Oram gelesen und somit auch lieben gelernt haben, aber der Hype ist natürlich nicht an mir vorbei gegangen. Da ich von der Prämisse von"V is for Virgin" auch direkt angesprochen war und nun schon so viel gutes über die Autorin gehört hatte, war ich auf jeden Fall gespannt auf den neuen Titel aus dem One-Verlag.

Der Einstieg in die Geschichte fiel mir relativ leicht, was vor allen Dingen an Kelly Orams lockerleichten Schreibstil lag, der erfrischend gut zu dem Setting der Geschichte gepasst hat. Angesiedelt ist die Handlung an der Highschool, wie es sich wie so typisch bei einem Young-Adult Buch gehört. Natürlich wurden hier auch mit Klischees gespielt, was mich aber nicht weiter gestört hat, da der Fokus sehr stark auf dem Hauptthema lag.

Die Protagonistin Val ist nämlich noch Jungfrau und der Roman soll auch jüngere Leserinnen dazu ermutigen, dass es völlig in Ordnung ist, wenn man im Teenageralter noch nicht so viele Erfahrungen gemacht hat, sondern sich wie in Val's Fall einfach noch Zeit lassen möchte, bis man mit einer anderen Person schläft. Prinzipell ist das eine sehr gute Einstellung und wirklich erwünschenswert, dass in unserer Gesellschaft offen über das Thema geredet wird und besonders junge Mädchen begreiflich gemacht wird, dass sie sich alles andere als unter Druck gesetzt fühlen müssen bestimmte Erfahrungen schon in einem sehr jungen Alter gesammelt haben zu müssen. Das dieser Message eine Plattform geboten wird, ist somit schon mal eine gute Sache, allerdings nicht im Kontext dieses Jugendbuches.

Der Loveinterest Kyle benimmt sich von Anfang an wie ein Arschloch, betreibt Slutshaming und drängt die Protagonistin Val immer und immer wieder dazu mit ihm zu schlafen. Und trotzdem entwickelt das junge Mädchen Gefühle für ihn.Aber auch Val, welche gerne die Moralapostel spielt, hat keine weiße Weste und könnte meine anfänglich Begeisterung für sie leider nicht aufrecht erhalten und auch der ganze mediale Aufzug war mir einfach zu viel des Guten. Gegen Ende entwickeln sich dann plötzlich doch fast alle Charakter des Buches weiter, was in einem sehr überzogen Epilog endet, welcher die Spannung auf Teil zwei schüren soll. Dieser hat jede Unglaubwürdigkeit des Buches aufgegriffen und auf ein komplett neues Level gebracht. Es ist viel zu viel passiert. Besonders, wenn man das Alter der Charaktere betrachtet.

Es gab in dem Buch sowieso einige große Zeitsprünge, die irgendwie Lücken in der Erzählung und Entwicklung der Figuren gerissen haben. Dadurch war die ganze Sache nicht so rund, wie ich es mir erhofft hätte. Ebenfalls nicht so wie erhofft wurde das Thema der Jungfräulichkeit behandelt. Die Sache wird stark übertrieben und aufgebauscht, wodurch gleichzeitig die ganze Geschichte stark unrealistisch wirkt. Es gibt wirklich viele Übertreibungen und auch wenn das irgendwie ganz gut zum Buch gepasst hat, war das mir persönlich oft zu drüber. Ein weiterer Kritikpunkt ist, dass ich eigentlich eine Liebesgeschichte erwartet habe, aber es in Wirklichkeit gar keine gibt.

Dieses Buch ist echt deshalb schwierig zu bewerten. Ich bin mit dem Schreibstil sehr gut klargekommen, habe das Buch auch in einem Rutsch durchgelesen und verstehe, warum der Verlag einen solchen Titel für sein Programm auswählt. Wenn man sich doch tiefergehend mit der Geschichte beschäftigt, merkt man wie viele Probleme diese eigentlich beinhaltet. Aus diesem wirklich wichtigen Thema hätte man eine wirklich schönere Geschichte konzipieren können, bei der die Message nicht im Sande verläuft und die vor allen Dingen dazu hätte beitragen sollen, dass man sich als Leser nicht über die gegensätzlichen Wertevermittlungen ärgert. Es war viel Potenzial vorhanden, aber dieses Buch sollte in keinem Fall als Vorbild für junge Mädchen dienen.

Fazit: "V is for Virgin" kann letztendlich nur mit Kelly Orams Schreibstil punkten. Ansonsten fehlen sympatische Charaktere und sogar eine wirklich nachvollziehbare Liebesgeschichte. Das Thema hätte so gut funktionieren können, aber "V is for Virgin" ist am Ende leider nichts mehr als ein Jugendbuch mit verpacktem Slutshaming und Sexismus, die nicht dazu dienen sollte, das sich junge Leser/-innen diese Geschichte an ihr ein Beispiel nehmen.

Ich hatte ja echt Sorge, dass mich das Buch komplett enttäuschen würde, da einige Meinungen echt nicht wirklich positiv waren.
Ich muss gestehen, dass es mich so sehr in seinen Bann ziehen konnte wie cinder und Ella. Aber es war trotzdem schön. An einigen Stellen fehlte mir die Tiefe, die Gefühle, aber an anderen stellen mochte ich val und ihre Geschichte sehr gerne :)

5.The theme !I know the title sounds cheesy but I was warned by Rachel E. Carter(my Gandalf to cute books) to look past it because it was actually a fresh,funny and entertaining read!In fact Kelly Oram managed to deal with a very controversial and kinda private theme in a way that wasn't preachy,which is quite an accomplishment!

4.The writing ;let's just say that once you start it there is no way to put the book down!It is quick-paced and very witty,sarcastic and sensitive,the dialogues are priceless and the characters grow into you whether you like it or not!

3.Val ;A girl who made a vow to herself that she will not make her biological mother's mistakes and instead she'll take her sexual life seriously and the only guy she'll ever sleep with is her future husband!Of course she never imagined that her decision would influence a movement of sexual awareness,declaring that no girl or boy should be afraid to admit that she/he is a virgin and that saying no out of respect to themselves is something they should be proud of.She faced many challenges,her life was always in the spotlight and she lost people she cared about in the process,she faced the crowds' malice and hatred and many times she almost broke down,but she stayed true to herself and her promise!She was very brave and stubborn in a good way!You've gotta love her!

And I must add that he's the kind of bad boy that turns your world upside down,takes a strong grip of your body and your soul and leaves you scatterbrained every time he stares at you or touches you or writes hot songs about you.Yeap,totally my book boyfriend type.In every scene that Kyle is involved (I wish there were more) you blush deeply,your heart explodes and your poor mind can't comprehend his hotness.

Endlich geschafft. Wenn ich dieses Buch mit einem Wort beschreiben müsste, wäre es "schwierig".
Die Grundidee und die Botschaft, welche die Autorin hier vermutlich gerne vermitteln wollte, finde ich wirklich wichtig und unterrepräsentiert. Nämlich, dass es vollkommen okay ist, als Teenager noch nicht bereit zu sein Sex zu haben und dies auch deutlich zu kommunizieren.
So startet auch unsere Geschichte. Leider wurde mir unsere Protagonistin Val von Seite zu Seite unsympathischer, da sie extrem mit zweierlei Maß misst und null Verständnis für andere Sichtweisen/Standpunkte aufbringt. Direkt zu Beginn gibt es einen schlimmen Fall von Slutshaming, den unsere ach so moralische Protagonistin betreibt. Da hätte ich das Buch schon fast abgebrochen.
Aber auch abgesehen davon: ich hatte hier zumindest eine Liebesgeschichte erwartet... aber wo war die? Von Kyle´s Seite aus ging es nur um sexuelle Anziehung. Der einzige Charakter, den ich mochte war Isaac.
Cara war für mich zu Anfang, als beste Freundin noch sympathisch, aber was sie dann im Laufe der Geschichte alles abzieht... Klar Val ist auch nicht unbeteiligt, aber das Bild was hier von Freundschaft vermittelt wird, mochte ich gar nicht.
Und dann dieses übertrieben Epilog, der auch noch so vorhersehbar war. Also ich weiß echt nicht was das alles sollte in diesem Buch... Da hat die Autorin sich leider echt vergaloppiert...
Einzig den Schreibstil mochte ich wieder gerne, der hat mich am Ball bleiben und das Buch beenden lassen. Mal schauen ob ich mir Band 2 irgendwann auch noch antue.

¿Y la razón #1 de por qué la Virgen Val apesta?

Quede realmente sin palabras, había esperado bastante para leer este libro, tanto así que fui capaz de leer un formato mal hecho de este solo porque el libro realmente me intrigaba, creo que tengo que decir que me gusto mucho la forma en la que la autora escribió, me gustaron sus personajes pero sin embargo el final me dejo bastante que desear, aun así vale la pena leerla porque es realmente una buena historia. No que simplemente tengas que llegar virgen al matrimonio pero vale la pena esperar. Esta es la clase de libros que deberían entregar en los colegios, que deberían poner a los adolescentes a leer y aunque se que muchos no se dejan influenciar por la lectura muchos pueden si ser influenciados por ello, porque me parece que el sexo es un tema que se toma muy a la ligera hoy en día, el libro te da realmente mucho para reflexionar pero es sin duda divertido.

Si tengo una queja sería la absurda manera en la que el tiempo transcurrió pero igual creo que merece una buena calificación porque de alguna manera me parece que las merece.

Kyle es oficialmente parte de mi séquito de personajes a los que amo locamente.

Mal schauen, ob ich heute meine Sprachlosigkeit überwinden und eine Review schreiben kann 🙈
Das wird gar nicht so einfach meine Meinung zu begründen ohne zu spoilern, deshalb kennzeichne ich das lieber mal. Vermutlich wird dieser Text sogar nur so vor Spoilern triefen, damit ich mir Luft machen kann.

Wo soll ich bloß anfangen?
Zu Beginn hatte ich noch die Hoffnung, dass das Buch gar nicht so schlimm werden würde, wie ich im Vorfeld schon hier und da gehört hatte. Ich wollte mir eine eigene Meinung bilden und bin also ganz neutral in dieses Buch gestartet.
Auf den ersten Seiten war ich auch noch recht optimistisch, dass mir die Geschichte gefallen könnte, zudem ließ sie sich wirklich super lesen, denn der Schreibstil ist wunderbar locker leicht und man fliegt nur so durch.
Aber damit hört das Positive dann leider auch schon auf.
Grundsätzlich fand ich die Idee von Protagonistin Valerie gar nicht schlecht. Die Message, dass es völlig okay ist mit dem Sex zu warten, wenn man noch nicht bereit ist und sich nicht von der Gesellschaft unter Druck setzen zu lassen: super und durchaus wert unterstützt zu werden.
Aber diese Aussage verkehrt sich schon sehr bald in etwas ganz anderes. Ganz salopp gesagt nämlich in die Aussage, dass man keinen Sex vor der Ehe haben sollte und jeder der es doch tut ist eine Schlampe. Das ist zumindest das, was ich aus dem gelesenen herausgezogen und wie ich es interpretiert habe. Und diese Message finde ich einfach absolut nicht in Ordnung.
Sex wird permanent als etwas schlechtes dargestellt, von Toleranz gegenüber denjenigen, die nicht bis zur Ehe warten wollen, kann man hier nicht sprechen. Dabei gäbe es einige andere Probleme, denen Val sich hätte stellen können, wie z.B. die Themen Alkoholismus oder Verhütung. Das hätte in meinen Augen viel mehr Sinn ergeben.

Valerie ist so sehr darauf aus, für ihre Entscheidung Jungfrau zu bleiben nicht veruteilt zu werden, aber gleichzeitig verurteilt sie selbst andere und behandelt sie teilweise schlecht. Zum Beispielt hat sie kein Problem damit über einen Bekannten aus dem Einkaufszentrum, in dem sie jobbt, zu denken, dass es bei seinem Aussehen ja kein Wunder ist, dass er noch Jungfrau ist.
Und nachdem sie sich von ihrem Exfreund Zach getrennt hatte und frisch mit Isaac zusammen kam, hat sie kein Problem damit zu Zach zu sagen, dass sie hofft, dass Isaac sie über ihn hinwegtröstet. Während Isaac daneben sitzt wohlgemerkt.

Sowieso waren die Charaktere absolut schräg drauf. Nicht nur Val konnte ich nicht leiden, auch ihre beste Freundin Cara mochte ich nicht. Die beiden haben sich eh nur das halbe Buch über gestritten und keine der beiden ist so richtig auf die jeweils andere eingegangen und jede war nur mit ihrem eigenen Kram beschäftigt. Val wird sowieso ständig von allen Seiten gelobt und steigt zu einer richtigen kleinen Berühmtheit auf, dauernd bekommt man zu hören wie toll und was für ein großes Vorbild sie ist. Sie ist viel zu sehr mit ihrem Erfolgsrausch beschäftigt und Cara klebt nur noch an ihrem Freund und kann sich nicht einmal bei einem gemeinsamen Abendessen für 5 Minuten zusammen reißen bis sie ihm wieder die Zunge in den Hals steckt und Val links liegen lässt.

Aber die mit Abstand schlimmste Figur in diesem Buch, war der eigentliche Loveinterest Kyle, der Sänger der Band Tralse, der einen Narren an Val gefressen hat und ihr sogar einen Song (und später ein ganzes Album) widmet.
Der Song war absolut grauenvoll, aber was erwartet man bei so einer Person?
Kyle ist aufdringlich und dreist und fies und nutzt jede Gelegenheit um Val irgendwo zu berühren oder sie ungefragt vor versammelter Mannschaft zu küssen. Er wird nicht müde immer wieder deutlich zu machen wie gerne er Val doch die Jungfräulichkeit nehmen würde und gräbt an ihr herum was das Zeug hält. Er ist ein echtes Arschloch, netter kann man es nicht sagen.
Aber natürlich herrscht zwischen Kyle und Val eine gewisse körperliche Anziehungskraft, die Val vehement leugnet und Kyle schamlos auszunutzen versucht. Aber warum genau die beiden sich jetzt eigentlich toll finden und warum Kyle so besessen von Val ist (außer natürlich, dass sie als erklärte Jungfrau eine Herausforderung darstellt, was er auch ganz offen sagt), das wird nicht deutlich. Da kamen einfach überhaupt keine Gefühle an.
Da kann man fast von Glück sprechen, dass Klyes Auftritte in dem Buch sowieso etwas begrenzt sind. Er springt immer nur alle paar Kapitel mal aus einer Ecke um Val und dem Leser auf die Nerven zu gehen.

Es gab dann mittendrin auch noch so einen mega verwirrenden Zeitsprung von ein paar Monaten, der überhaupt nicht gekennzeichnet war und mich total irritiert hat.
Von dem grauenhaften Ende will ich eigentlich gar nicht erst anfangen. Da werden nochmal alle Register an schmalzigem Hollywood Kitsch gezogen... ich hätte mich gerne übergeben.
Der Epilog spielt 4 Jahre später, alle Freunde von Val sind verheiratet und schwanger oder haben schon ein Kind und Kyle wurde "geläutert" und kann Val plötzlich verstehen... aaaargh
Ich habe mich für Band 2 spoilern lassen und hatte prompt den nächsten hysterischen Lachanfall... ich werde den selbstverständlich nicht mehr lesen.

Wenn ich das Buch nicht mit meinen Lesebuddys in einer Leserunde gelesen hätte, dann hätte ich es definitiv abgebrochen. So hat wenigstens die Diskussion viel Spaß gemacht.
Aber das Buch ist leider überhaupt nicht empfehlenswert. Es war an so vielen Stellen falsch, so nervig, voller Fremdschäm-Momente und einfach nur schlecht. Tut mir leid, dass ich da so direkt sein muss, aber das hat mich einfach nur aufgeregt.

V is for Virgin by Kelly Oram is the first book in the young adult contemporary V is for Virgin duology. I've had this one for a while now and I was honestly surprised at just how well I liked it now that I've read it.

Val is in high school and as much as she loves her boyfriend Zach she's made a pact with herself that she is going to wait until marriage before losing her virginity. When Zach plans a night together and pushes for more than Val is willing to give the couple split up. But the worst comes for Val when Zach starts a new relationship and she's filmed telling the girl off.

After becoming a YouTube sensation for standing up for her beliefs Val attracts the unwanted attention of a rock star and finds herself in the spotlight. Instead of cowering from it though Val welcomes the publicity and starts her V is for Virgin campaign.

In the first few chapters I was quite proud of Val and liked her immediately for standing up for her beliefs. But along with the positive message the story also has plenty of other things happening to keep the pages turning and with that plenty of emotion oozing from the pages whether they are ups or downs.  Definitely a fun story that I'm glad I finally took time to read and would recommend.

I love the cover. :)

OMG. I cried! I freakin' cried because of this book! What the heck is wrong with me? LOL. I liked it. A lot. Not because the guy, Kyle is so swoon worthy or that he's oncredibly hot. It's because I like how the story went. From the first page, V is for Virgin, have my attention. I like Valerie's character. Her fight for this cause, for what she believes in, is so... honorable and responsible of her. Well, okay, I don't know the right words to describe Valerie.

I liked how she got her doubts about it cause let's face it, that is so not easy to do. Especially when a lot of people doesn't want to believe in you and they are ridiculing you. It's normal to get doubts. Especially because of those big things you need to decide carefully.

So Kyle here, the lead vocalist of Tralse, is up for the challenge which is Valerie. I like him okay, he made me smile and laugh, but I still like Ryan Miller more than him. LOL. It's all because of the way he approach Valerie. His methods are not good. :/ I actually want to shake him a little as to why can't he be THAT kind of person.

In that second to the last chapter, or is it third? Anyway, I keep on wondering like Valerie. I mean, is love really not that enough to enjoy the relationship? Is it really that necessary to have sex when you are in a relationship? I'm not being prude, but I just have to admit that that questions got me.

Well, I love Valerie's cause. So much that I'm giving this book a well-deserved FIVE stars. Although it's really a bit lacking since I really dig love story. But am turning a blind eye for that one because of Valerie and V is For Virgin cause. Btw, that last chapter reminded me of a movie called, Crazy Little Thing Called Love. It's a Thailand love story and I love it. ;) It just remind me of that because of the interview and the guests. ;)

EDIT: I feel the need to clarify some things in my review. :P I rated it 5 stars because of Valerie's cause. I know I gave it way too high but I just like that cause too much. BUT if you remove that V is for Virgin thingies, I would end up rating it 3 stars for the story. or maybe 2.5 stars. Kyle and Valerie doesn't really have that much exposure with each other. So yeah. And NO, I am not editing my rating for it. :P

Inhalt: „V is for Virgin“ von Kelly Oram ist am 29.05.2020 bei one von Bastei Lübbe erschienen. Es ist der erste Band der Kellywood-Diologie.
Innerhalb weniger Stunden wird Valerie Jensen online berühmt und zwar als Virgin Val. Ihr Freund hatte am Abend zuvor mit ihr Schluss gemacht, weil sie nicht bereit gewesen ist mit ihm zu schlafen. Sie möchte bis zur Ehe warten und hat das in der Schule auch lautstark kundgetan. Neben den Trubel um ihre Einstellung zum Thema Sex muss sie auch noch ein Schulfest planen. Auf der Suche nach einer Band trifft sie auf die Band Tralse. Die Bandmitglieder waren früher auf ihrer Schule und haben sie nach ihrem ersten Hit verlassen. Der Rockstar und Leadsänger Kyle Hamilton bekommt Wind von der Virgin Val Sache und nimmt sich vor sie zu verführen.


Meinung: Das Cover gefällt mir gut. Die Farben springen einen ins Auge und die Position des Titels ist perfekt gewählt. Der Schreibstil konnte mich auch wieder überzeugen. Übersetzt wurde die Geschichte von Stephanie Pannen.
Diese Geschichte hat mich lange beschäftigt und ich bin mir auch jetzt noch nicht so sicher was ich von dem Ganzen halten soll. Die Cinder & Ella Reihe der Autorin habe ich geliebt und auch dieses Thema hier ist interessant und auch wichtig. Jeder sollte selbst entscheiden können und dürfen wann er Sex haben möchte ohne als prüde oder sexsüchtig zu gelten. Gerade in der heutigen Zeit ist es ein wichtiges Thema. Genau diese beiden extremen Unterschiede wurden im Buch meistens thematisiert. Val wird die meiste Zeit für prüde gehalten und andersrum findet es Val ganz schrecklich, wenn andere vor der Ehe Sex haben. Wenn es um junge Teenies geht kann ich es ja verstehen. Heutzutage ist es aber normal nicht bis zur Ehe zu warten. Mich haben diese ständigen Verurteilungen auf allen Seiten ziemlich gestört. Leider dreht sich der Großteil der Geschichte darum. Val greift sogar ihre beste Freundin an, weil die Sex hatte. Diese wiederrum hat sich nicht getraut ihrer besten Freundin davon zu erzählen. Insgesamt fand ich die Freundschaft der beiden ziemlich toxisch. Val wollte ihr immer alles recht machen und wenn irgendwas nicht so lief haben die sich angezickt und teilweise auch nicht mehr miteinander geredet. So sieht für mich keine wahre Freundschaft aus und so verhalten sich erst recht keine beste Freundinnen. Auch zwischen Val und Kyle hat die Chemie in meinen Augen null gestimmt. Er wollte sie, weil sie Jungfrau ist und das wars auch schon. Die Streitereien und Neckereien zwischen den beiden fand ich teilweise noch recht witzig und erfrischend. Kyle ist für mich die ganze Zeit eher ein oberflächlicher Typ geblieben. Um seine Musik oder Karriere ging es auch kaum. Er hätte also genauso gut auch irgendein Kerl sein können. Valerie erscheint mit ihrer entschlossenen Einstellung stärker und selbstsicherer als er. Auch der Grund, warum sie Jungfrau bis zur Ehe bleiben möchte, ist verständlich erklärt. Allerdings finde ich, dass sie sich aus den selben Gründen eher gegen Alkohol- und/oder Drogenkonsum oder mehr Verhütung hätte einsetzen können. Ich glaube, dass das weniger problematische Themen sind und es einfacher in dieser Geschichte umsetzbar gewesen wäre. Natürlich ist das Thema Sex wichtig, aber ich glaube, jeder hat da seine eigene Einstellung und Vorstellung von. In diesem Buch werden mir persönlich zu viele verurteilt und man hat das Gefühl, dass man es niemanden recht machen kann. Ich finde, dass man die Themen Verhütung und Aufklärung mehr hätte einbauen müssen.


Fazit: Ein Buch, das mich lange zum nachdenken gebracht hat und bei dem ich hin- und hergerissen bin. Ich mag die Stärke und den Einsatz von Val. Andererseits finde ich, dass dort ziemlich viele Verurteilungen stattfinden. Das Buch war ganz anders als ich erwartet hatte und hat mich enttäuscht. Das Ende war ziemlich plötzlich und auch vorhersehbar und klischeehaft.
Trotzdem interessiert mich, wie es in Band 2, der am 28.07.2020 bei one erscheint, weitergeht. Teil ist aus Kyles Sicht geschrieben und ich bin gespannt seine Sichtweise zu erfahren und wie die beiden erwachsen geworden sind.

Pero qué libro tan más malooo. En serio, nunca digo que un libro es malo porque me da cosa pero este libro simplemente es una broma.

LO ODIÉ!!!!!!!! 🙄

1. La protagonista es insoportable.
2. La historia es patética.
3. La forma en que se toma la sexualidad como algo del diablo o malo y se invita a mantener la virginidad y la abstinencia es tan bizarra e increíble que aún ni siquiera estoy segura de porque lo terminé.
4. La narrativa es aburrida y lenta.
5. Lo único bueno es Kyle y por eso la estrella, de no ser por él le dejaba cero.

Sencillamente no es un libro que recomendaría por la simple razón de que parece ser una caricatura de lo que para la autora debería ser una vida ideal.

Val es odiosa, impertinente, insensible, maleable, caprichosa, insidiosa, y aprovechada.

Va por el mundo caminando con la etiqueta de virgen como si el hecho de serlo o no, cambiara algo la detestable persona que es.

Come on!!!!!!! Girl, si quieres ser virgen tú, es TOTALMENTE RESPETABLE. Cada quien es dueño de su cuerpo y sus pensamientos. Pero no hay necesidad de hacer a fuerzas que los demás piensen como tú.

No está bien poner ultimatums para estar con alguien o para tener una relación romántica. NO ES SANO ni realista.

Eso de que "si me quieres esperaras hasta el matrimonio" es tan idealista e ilógico que me quedo sin palabras.

Y ojo aquí, yo sé que hay religiones donde la virtud de una mujer aún en esta época sigue siendo de suma importancia y es totalmente respetable y normal.

Repito, cada quien es dueño de su cuerpo y cada quien decide cuando quiere o no tener sexo. Sin importar lo que diga la gente o la presión social eso es una decisión únicamente tuya y de nadie más. Valerie mi amiga aquí, claramente nunca pudo comprenderlo pues para ella el que respeten su decisión de esperar, significa que los demás deben pensar como ella. Y forzarlos a "respetarla".


Tener sexo con novio no es malo. Tener sexo con alguien que amas no es malo. TENER SEXO simplemente porque quieres NO ES MALO. Aunque si háganlo con protección chavos hahahah

When Val’s boyfriend Zach dumps her for not wanting sex before marriage, her public blow-out in the high school cafeteria becomes a viral video. Initially, this causes a lot of embarrassment. But then the encouraging comments start pouring in, and Val decides to do something with all the attention: by creating a V is for Virgin and A is for Abstinence jewellery line, she makes her case against teenagers engaging in sex too early. Then she meets Kyle Hamilton, bad boy and lead singer of local rock band Tralse. And when he nicknames her Legs, a feud starts. Will she be able to hold her ground when Kyle makes her virginity a personal challenge?

V is for Virgin truly resonated with me. Because I could relate to Val – she had her own, personal reasons for wanting to wait until marriage – and because she stayed true to her integrity. And it could have been done in a really in-your-face kind of way. But it wasn’t preachy at all, and it didn’t become judgy about people who didn’t wait. You got both sides of the debate. It was done really well, and made for an enjoyable story. There’s a bit of polarity in this story, because by taking a stand and making it a big deal, she’s basically saying it’s not. It’s not a big deal to be a virgin in high school, or after that, really, because we all know high school never ends – Bowling For Soup reference, up top!

"Becoming sexually active is a huge decision. It's not one we should let the world or even our own boyfriends make for us."

Another big reason why I loved the story was Val’s relationship with Kyle. I love nothing more than a good love/hate relationship, and this one was pretty much perfect. Kyle was an arrogant douche-canoe who saw Val as a personal challenge, but Val was adamant about her morals and did her very best to resist Kyle. Their sexual tug-of-war was so much fun to read about and their banter was delightful – Val’s comebacks often made me laugh out loud.

Even if you’re not looking for a story with a message, it’s still a cute and funny contemporary read. Pick it up if you enjoy banter, love/hate relationships, stories involving rock bands, and sexy fluff (is that a thing? I’m making it a thing).

2.5 stars - This book had a really great concept, but for some reason, I just didn't feel very satisfied at the end.

To start off, yes, this book was cliche, but that wasn't the reason. I don't mind cliche as long as it was entertaining. I felt Oram did a much better job writing with "Being Jamie Baker" because Ryan totally made the book, where Kyle failed to do so here. Ryan was sweet and totally swoon-worthy, and his bickering with Jamie was quite engaging.

I think Oram attempted the same ambience with this book, but it just didn't work right. There weren't great one-liners and dialogues between Val and Kyle that stayed with me. There was definitely an attraction, but the whole exchange felt so shallow. And Kyle did not come off as a cocky but intriguing character like Ryan Miller in BJB or Daemon Black in Lux were. He was just presented a stubborn jerk who was after the chase. And it didn't really help that his character didn't really follow through.

The other thing was the concept of lessons learned. Let's start with the main one - saving yourself for the one. I really admired Val for her thoughts and for her efforts to stand up for what she believed in. And I liked the direction Oram took with it. But I kind of resented the way the book ended.

I liked Eric (who's Eric, do you ask), who was very supportive of Val from the beginning, and I really, really liked Isaac for sticking by her through it all. I even liked Zach at the end for realizing how stupid he was. But the fact was Val ended up with no one.

I understand that some may argue that it makes the book more powerful because it proves that Val can be independent in her choice to stand up for what she believes. But I beg to differ. While it makes a cliche ending, I would have preferred her finding someone who she was happy with (edit: during high school) and was willing to wait for marriage.

This is a book about the high school years when pressure like this is really hard on teenagers, and in a way, her ending up alone kind of puts off the impression that she hasn't found a guy that is willing to wait, when it fact, there were plenty. While I'm proud she remained true to herself, I don't want teenage girls thinking they have to be a feminist or extremist in saving their virginity. I understand why Oram wrote the end this way, but at the same time, I wanted Val to find happiness in closure. Does that make any sense?

The other thing was, I felt that Val did go through a lot, and I would never want to go through what she did. But for some reason, I just didn't feel like VAL came out with a lot of lessons learned here. It made the story really unbelievable.

1) I wish it had worked out between Kyle and Val because she walked into it with this preconceived notion that he was the typical rock star who just wanted to get in her pants. Turns out she was right, and I hated that he couldn't understand her point of view at the end. Yes, he did like her, but I think a lot of it was the challenge. He did learn his lesson later with Adriana, and it left it open-ended to where there may be something possible with Val, but it didn't help in the main story. And I saw how Oram tried to prove that not all rock stars are what they appeared to be with Shane, but he was just a side story. But not a lesson learned for Val.

2) I wish it had worked out with Isaac even though I knew it just wouldn't. Isaac was there for her through everything, and he was such a huge support. And being happy with him would prove that there are guys are there who are willing to wait. He found his own happiness later, but why do the nice guys always have to finish last?

3) The fight with Cara? I hate Cara was such a self-absorbed bad friend. I mean, yes, I understand it's typical, but I also felt that Val was so wrapped up in her world too that she kind of (though unintentionally) left her friend behind. I mean, it happens that people drift apart, and I'm glad they were able to make up. But I don't really like how Val was kind of made the saint in this book, almost as if the rift in their friendship was Cara's blame. She was too busy with her boyfriend. She was too busy with the music video and movie. She was never there when Val called or needed her. Yes, Cara was a horrible friend, but I don't she was alone in that. Again, not really a lesson learned for Val.

4) I was glad to see that Oram did brush a little on Olivia. I mean, yes, she was a huge slut, but I liked how Oram shed some light on why she was the way she was, and how she attempted to redeem herself at the end. Still, it was short-lived, and even though Val had been wrong about Olivia, I don't think it was as deep as that - more like Olivia saying," I'm sorry about how I acted, and I am going to make it up to you." Olivia. Not Val.

Don't mind me. I'm not trying to nitpick this book, and I'm glad my friends enjoyed the book more than I did. I would have settled for cute but entertaining, but it wasn't as fun to read as "Being Jamie Baker." And for the seriousness of the issue, I just didn't finish the book with that satisfied "You go girl, Val!" feeling that I was hoping for. Don't get me wrong, I liked this book enough. I just felt there was something missing.

And where there is an erotic book, there's a cock and a vagina.And if you add up those two, well, rest assure that it's not chess or monopoly we're talking about.


So let's back up a little bit.

I'm not sure if this is actually true in real life, but a lot of movies and books that focuses on high school life portrays the ff:

•Sex.
•Skipping school
•Party
•Alcohol
•Popularity

Is it true? Here in our country, when you depicted high school life, the media shows us the goody two shoes students who strive to work hard to be a Valedictorian or to be a part of the honor students. There's a bit of a partying involved but the media does not dare show anything about sex and drugs for the fear of being prosecuted of immorality.Huh.

Valerie is a virgin.

It all started when Valerie's boyfriend Zach wants to do the nasty and Valerie said no. Thus prompting the world wide campaign of V is for Virgin.

Plus points for the ff:

•The point made in the book that if you want to stay virgin, that's your choice. Just don't condemn the people who made those choices.

• The fact that some young people actually know the meaning of the word abstinence. Imagine that.

• You don't have to break your hymen with someone just because of peer pressure.But if you want to do it with someone you think you love, then do it.Seriously, who are we to stand against the power of love?

But I rated this book 4 star. So if you were wondering why I rated Kelly Oram's book a blasphemous 4 star instead of 5, here's the reason.


• The Cara friend:
She was the prime example of a FRIMP , a friend who is a pimp. Really girl, your best friend hated your boyfriend's bestfriend and you're still selling her out just to see your guy?


• The singer. Kyle Hamilton.
I was never impressed with you. All the douchey thing you've done, I don't even know where to start.

Wait. I do know where to start.

Remember when you wrote a song about Valerie telling the whole world you want to have sex with her? Even if you're not famous and all that, that was a jerk ward thing to do. You, being as famous as MAROON 5 only makes it ten times more jerky.

I don't know how people find that romantic. Is it because Kyle is famous and hot so that excuses his asshole behavior? Not in my book. Now all you hear are songs where boys want to hook up with you when all The Beatles wanted was to hold your hand. That is romantic people. Get your head fixed. May it be the upper head or the lower head.


•Isaac Warren:
Dude,you were the goody bad boy....And I fell in love with you.

The redeeming quality despite all this nonsense characters:

• The ending.
I love it. It was open ending. And I love the way Kyle matures.

So basically, I love this book for what it's telling us but the characters are so not in my favorite list.

5 'I couldn't put it down' stars!!!

I don't even know how I stumbled across this incredible book, but I'm glad I did! I went into reading this book expecting it to be an 'eh' read, but I should have punched 'before me' in the face for even remotely considering this book ever to be an 'eh' read. V is for Virgin is incredibly amazing, and I love this book with my entire being! Do you understand???

You ever promised yourself something and even though you knew everyone would be against it or make fun of you for it, you still kept the promise to yourself? Well, that's practically what our heroine, Val is doing/did in this book. Val is an eighteen, a senior in high school, on the B turned A-list of popularity, Vice President for her student council, plays volleyball, tall, mature, intelligent, feisty, and strong-minded... Oh, I almost forgot one thing... a virgin (There is NOTHING wrong with being a virgin). Val was a virgin by choice, and she chose that choice because she didn't want to make the same mistake her biological mother made. Val promised herself that she wouldn't give into temptation and to save herself for her future husband. She dreaded dropping the bomb on guys whenever she knew that they would want more from her but what Val didn't expect was the reaction she got from her three-month boyfriend, Zack.

“Telling someone you're a virgin isn't easy, to begin with, but telling someone that you plan on staying that way is even harder.”

The reaction she got from Zack may have lead Val being single by the end of the night and by the next morning seeing her ex-boyfriend making out with a new play toy girl. Val could have done multiple things in that situation, but instead, she got on top of a table spoke her mind and announced to the whole school that she was a virgin. See, If I were there, I would have started a slow clap or something, but instead Val got whispered and laughed at. Who laughs at someone for being a virgin? ESPECIALLY when half the people laughing and whispering are probably virgins too? Don't worry, whispers and laughs didn't bring Val down, not even close. Some people are driven off of anger, some are driven off of rejection, some are drive off of self-pride, and some are just driven off of the fact that they want to make a situation into a solution... Val was all of those, and that is how Virgin Val was created. Val found out that the outbursts at Zack were recorded and put on Youtube which allowed her to read comments she didn't expect to find. The comments she read gave her an idea which leads to a school-wide campaign to rally support for 'V' is for Virgin and 'A' is for abstinence campaign.

You think Val's campaign got nationwide by herself? She can thank Tralse or can I say, Kyle Hamilton for that. Give me 5 seconds while I fangirl like a total groupie right now. (1) KYLE IS ONE OF MY NEW FAVORITE BOOK BOYFRIENDS!! (2) HE'S SUCH A SMART ASS IT MAKES MY LAUGH BOX BREAK! (3) CAN HE WRITE A SONG ABOUT ME!?!?!? (4) WHY CAN'T I MARRY HIM!? (5) IF I WAS VAL, I WOULDN'T BE A VIRGIN FOR LONG. JUST SAYING!! Kyle Hamilton is the lead singer in a rock band called Tralse. You're probably wondering what Val and a rock band would have to do with each other, but if it weren't for them Val wouldn't have gotten even close to as famous, and she is. If it wasn't for Val's best friend, Cara dragging Val to one of the Tralse shows to ask them to perform at their high school annual Huntington High Fall Festival, who knows if Val would have gone nationwide or even school-wide with her cause.

"Big fans?" Shane asked.
I grabbed hold of Cara in case her knees decided to give out. "She's the big fan," I sad.
"Just her?" Kyle smirked like he didn't believe me.
I didn't mean to be rude, but I'd been on the defensive so much today that I automatically responded to the challenge in his voice. "That's what I just said, isn't it?"
“Legs with attitude.” Kyle’s tone warmed with approval. “Why don’t you bring those beauties over here. I got a spot all ready for ‘em.”
He and his buddies all chuckled when he patted his lap.
I wasn’t exactly impressed.
“I think these legs are fine where they are, thank you very much.”
Kyle wasn’t deterred at all by my rejection. “I wouldn’t have expected legs like those to be quite so shy.”
“Not shy,” I informed him. “Just holding out for a better offer.”

Okay. Okay. I never said that Val and the Tralse were the best of friends, but they did play a significant role in her campaign. I keep saying this because Val gave Kyle a run for his money. Yes, a virgin gave a rock star a run for this money. He didn't expect Val to put him in his place, embarrassed him in front of his band and everyone or even turn him down but for Kyle, all he heard in his head was "challenge accepted." Did Val and Cara convince Tralse to perform at the Festival? Yes.

I almost said yes. After what he just did for Cara I sort of wanted to, but something stopped me. "You'd really play an entire concert for free just to go on a date with me?
"Looks that way, doesn't it?"
"Why"? I asked.
Kyle's eyes dropped briefly to the V hanging from my neck and his frown melted into a cocky smile. "I can't resist a good challenge."
That's what I thought. "Well, I'm afraid you have a problem then, Kyle."
"What's that?"
"I never back down from a challenge either," I pointed to the jeans I was wearing. "This is one pair of pants you'll never get into."
"Ah, but you still have a whole closet full of others, and at least one very sexy skirt, don't you?"
"None of which you'll ever get your hands on either."
Kyle crossed his arms over his chest, studying me with a gleam in his eyes. "So that's how this is going to go?"
I matched his posture and then threw his own words back at him. "Looks that way, doesn't it?"

Did Val almost KILL Kyle because he made a song about her? Of course.

It was quick, perfect, witty, hilarious, simple, unique, and rememberable. All the things you would want in a book. I'm not asking; I'm telling you to read this book so what are you going to do? Read the book? Smart move ;)

Ich habe lange darüber nachgedacht, was ich jetzt mache. Bewerte ich das Buch überhaupt? Und wie bewerte ich es? Oder mache ich es mir leicht, indem ich auf Sterne verzichte, und einfach sage, dass es jeder selbst lesen soll, um sich ein eigenes Bild zu machen?
Das wäre zwar eine Möglichkeit, aber meine ehrliche Meinung wäre es nicht.
Ich denke zwar trotzdem, dass es jeder selbst lesen soll, wenn er denn möchte, da das hier ja nur meine persönliche Meinung ist, und Geschmäcker sind verschieden, aber empfehlen würde ich es auf keinen Fall, so leid mir das auch tut. Ich hoffe, mir ist niemand deshalb böse, aber es ist eben wie es ist.

Ich versuche mal im Folgenden zu erklären, warum mir das Buch nicht gefallen hat, und hoffe, dass ich das einigermaßen hinbekomme 😅

Als allererstes muss ich leider sagen, dass das Buch für mich schon ein recht schwieriges Grundproblem hat: es geht um die Frage, ob, wann, wie, mit wem und unter welchen Umständen man Sex haben sollte oder eben nicht. Nun ist das zwar eine interessante Frage für so ein Buch, doch gibt es hier einfach keine eindeutige Antwort, auf die die Autorin eigentlich hinauswollen könnte. Eine wirkliche Botschaft kann man am Ende eigentlich nicht vermitteln, außer: jeder eben so wie er es für sich für richtig hält, Hauptsache ist, man tut „es“ freiwillig und entscheidet „es“ selbst. Und genau da liegt eigentlich das Problem, denn die Autorin hat auf jeden Fall eine recht einseitige Meinung zu dem Thema, zumindest habe ich das so empfunden, und die finde ich für so eine Geschichte schwierig.
Vals Motivation mit dem Sex bis zur Ehe zu warten ist, dass ihre leibliche Mutter sich mit 16 auf einer Party betrunken hat und dann ihr erstes Mal mit irgendeinem Typen verbracht hat, und direkt schwanger wurde. Anstatt daraus die Lehre zu ziehen, dass Alkohol das Problem gewesen sein könnte, oder die fehlende Verhütung - nur mal so als Denkanstoß - war natürlich das erste Mal an sich Schuld. Val will es also besser machen und glaubt, dass eine Ehe der beste Rahmen für Sex ist. Es ist für sie etwas Gutes mit dem Sex zu warten, weil körperliche Nähe hauptsächlich deshalb zugelassen wird, weil junge Frauen so ihr Selbstwertgefühl steigern, und oft deshalb sexuellen Handlungen zustimmen, weil das Umfeld es ihnen schwer macht, „es“ nicht zu tun.
So geläutert erklärt es Olivia Val zumindest auch gegen Ende.
Diese Botschaft hat mir überhaupt nicht gefallen, weil ich finde, dass es eine persönliche Entscheidung ist, die jeder für sich selbst trifft, in wieweit er oder sie bereit für Sex ist. Doch die Autorin suggeriert, dass Sex eine ernste Sache ist, die nur durch eine Ehe legitimiert werden kann, wie man ja auch am Ende der Geschichte erfährt. Letztendlich ist das nämlich der einzig gangbare Weg für sämtliche Charaktere der Geschichte gewesen, wie zum Beispiel für Cara, die praktisch als einzige eine wirkliche Gegenposition zu Val eingenommen hatte, und selbst Kyle gibt zu, es nun endlich verstanden zu haben: wenn man jemanden liebt, ist man für ihn enthaltsam, man hat nicht ständig Sex, und man wird sesshaft und heiratet.
Puh. Ernsthaft? Mir fehlte hier eindeutig eine zweite, dritte oder vierte Auffassung, aber diese eliminiert die Autorin bis zum Ende so ja sehr geschickt.

Val ist auch generell überhaupt nicht mein Fall gewesen. Sie verschreibt sich sehr ihrer Sache und hat auch hier und da wirklich gute Argumente. Anfangs wirkt sie noch recht reflektiert. An diese Punkte hätte die Autorin sich auch gut halten können, um wirklich eine nachvollziehbare Botschaft zu vermitteln, die für mich okay gewesen wäre. Allerdings verliert sie sich recht schnell, und ich wusste überhaupt nicht mehr, worauf die Autorin eigentlich hinaus will. Es folgt eine Aneinanderreihung von Ereignissen, die mir genau... was vermitteln sollen? Dass Val unfassbar besonders und inspirierend ist, weil sie andere von ihrer Position überzeugen möchte? Das fand ich leider überhaupt nicht. Ich fand sie eher unsympathisch, oft kindisch, sehr oft manipulativ, noch öfter voller Vorurteile. Und die hatten es sogar in sich. So gibt es nämlich unter Jungfrauen eine Zweiklassengesellschaft: die Coolen, weil sie hübsch und beliebt sind, und die, denen man natürlich direkt ansieht, warum niemand mit ihnen schlafen will. Wirklich, Val?
Auch das Thema Freundschaft wird eher merkwürdig verarbeitet. Da wären zum einen Cara und Val - was ist das nur für eine Freundschaft, in der sich ständig darum gestritten wird, wer jetzt zu wenig Zeit für den anderen hatte, und wer wem irgendwas nicht sofort zuerst erzählt hat? Wer solche Freunde hat, braucht keine Feinde mehr. Zum anderen ist da Vals neuer Freundeskreis. Man bekommt eigentlich gar nicht mit, wie und warum sie auf einmal die besten Freunde werden, es ist dann halt einfach so.

Kyle Hamilton, der übrigens recht wenig vorkommt, und dann auch irgendwie sehr blass bleibt, ist furchtbar aufdringlich und irgendwie auch nicht ganz dicht, muss ich sagen. Seine Aktionen waren nicht süß oder romantisch, sondern problematisch, um es mal vorsichtig auszudrücken. Er hat es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, Val unbedingt zu verführen. Die Chemie zwischen den beiden suchte ich leider vergebens, aber alle anderen sehen sie natürlich sofort, die Funken, die zwischen den beiden unverkennbar hin und her fliegen. Allerdings kommen bei der eher nüchternen und plumpen Darstellung für mich keine Emotionen auf.
Wo wir schon beim Thema sind:
Die vorrangige Emotion in dieser Geschichte ist Wut. Es wird gebrüllt, geschrien, vor Wut gekocht, und sich gestritten. Aber das war’s auch schon mit der Bandbreite an Gefühlen. Mal abgesehen von etwas Verlangen hier und da. Tiefere Gefühle suchte ich aber vergebens.
Die Handlung kam mir insgesamt sehr wirr und schwammig vor, es gab keinen richtigen roten Faden, und mir fehlte auch von vorne bis hinten die Tiefe.
Im Prinzip war ich die meiste Zeit beim Lesen fassungslos, habe mit den Augen gerollt, oder Passagen zweimal gelesen, weil ich einfach nicht glauben konnte, was ich da lese.
Habe ich eigentlich schon die seltsamen Zeitsprünge erwähnt? 🙈

Nachdem ich Cinder & Ella sooo geliebt hatte, war ich hier extrem enttäuscht. Den zweiten Teil werde ich nicht lesen 😞

GUTE MESSAGE, ABER KEINE SYMPATHISCHEN CHARAKTERE UND FEHLENDE TIEFE
Erstmal vielen Dank an den One Verlag für die Bereitstellung dieses Rezensionsexemplares, ich habe mich riesig gefreut!

Es haben bestimmt alle mitbekommen, dass sich die Meinungen bei diesem Buch sehr spalten und sich entweder in die eine oder in die andere Richtung bewegen. Auch mich haben die negativen Meinungen sehr überschwemmt, aber ich habe versucht all das abzuschütteln und ganz unvoreingenommen an das Buch heranzugehen! Jeder besitzt eine andere Sichtweise und sollte sich seine eigene Meinung bilden. Den ersten Teil von Cinder & Ella habe ich wirklich sehr geliebt, deshalb habe ich auf noch so ein Highlight von ihr gehofft.

SCHREIBSTIL
Den Schreibstil finde ich sehr leicht, man kommt schnell voran beim Lesen, zudem ist das Buch sowieso nicht allzu lang, weshalb man es schnell durchlesen kann.

Was ich auch ganz gut fand, war, dass man sich sofort in der Handlung befindet und mit dem ganzen Thema vertraut gemacht wird und nicht erst lang drumherum geredet wurde, manchmal kam es mir aber sehr abgehackt und hektisch vor, denn es gab meist Zeitsprünge mitten in den Absätzen, womit ich dann irgendwie die Handlung zuvor nicht richtig ausklingen lassen konnte, weil es sehr schnell weiterging. So war für mich die Geschichte etwas Schlag auf Schlag.

Auch blieb für mich die Geschichte und ebenso die Charaktere einfach zu oberflächlich, es hatte keinen richtigen Tiefgang. Zudem konnte mich dieses Buch auch leider emotional nicht wirklich erreichen und bewegen, was für mich bei einem Buch sehr wichtig ist.

Das ganze Buch ist aus Valeries Perspektive geschrieben, womit ich auch sehr gut ihre Gedankengänge verstehen konnte, aber deshalb kam mir zum Teil auch Kyle zu kurz und man hat seine Gefühle, die zum Ende hin auf einmal vorhanden waren, nicht wirklich verstanden, da hätte ich mir zusätzlich noch seine Perspektive gewünscht. Die Kapitel haben für mich meist eine normale Länge.

CHARAKTERE
Valerie ist ein 17 Jähriges Mädchen, das durch ein YouTube Video von ihr, welches ziemlich viral ging, großes Aufsehen erregt. In diesem Video offenbart sie ihre Geschichte, dass sie sich aufbewahren will und bis zur Ehe warten möchte. Ich fand Valeries Gedankengänge und Sichtweisen, warum sie dies möchte, definitiv nachvollziehbar und auch extrem stark von ihr, wie sie sich für sich selbst eingesetzt hat. Valerie ist ein sehr engagiertes Mädchen, spielt in einer Volleyball Mannschaft und ist stellvertretende Schülersprecherin, dieses Engagement hat man durch das ganze Buch gespürt, sie wurde ein Vorbild für andere, hat die Situation umgekrempelt und durch ihr großes Aufsehen auch gleich ihre eigene Kampagne ins Leben gerufen. Dabei finde ich, dass Valerie immer sehr neutral blieb und keinem anderen ihre Überzeugungen aufdrängen wollte. Nach und nach hat sie meiner Meinung nach aber einige Menschen vor den Kopf gestoßen, allen voran ihrer ehemals besten Freundin, weil sie nur noch auf die Figur "Virgin Val", die sie in der Öffentlichkeit abgegeben hat und auf ihre Kampagne fokussiert war, aber ich kann auch verstehen, dass, wenn man plötzlich in der Öffentlichkeit steht, einem alles über den Kopf steigen kann. An Valerie fand ich klasse, wie schlagfertig sie, vor allem gegenüber Kyle, war, dass sie sich immer wieder von der Anziehung zurückziehen konnte und ihn in seine Schranken wies.

Kyle Hamilton ist der Leadsänger der Band Tralse. Er hat sich extrem oberflächlich und zum Teil arrogant aufgeführt, er hatte bei mir von Anfang an keine wirklichen Sympathiepunkte gesammelt. Er provoziert gerne und ist ein Casanova durch und durch. Nicht nur fehlte mir beim ihm jeglichen Tiefgang, er kommt so gut wie fast nie in diesem Buch vor, bis Seite 200 hatten die Charaktere erst 3 kurze Gespräche miteinander geführt. Es gab mitten im Buch ein Gespräch zwischen Val und ihm, bei dem ich dachte, dass es endlich bergauf gehen würde, weil es auch wirkte, als würde man endlich etwas mehr über ihn herausfinden, aber dann verlief das Gespräch auch wieder in eine komplett falsche Richtung.
Sonst gab es keinen anderen Moment, bei dem Kyle irgendwelche positiven Gefühle in mir hochgebracht hat. Man hat hier leider keine Einblicke, was Kyle vielleicht wirklich für ein Kerl ist und wie seine Gefühle am Ende überhaupt zu Stande gekommen sind.

Valeries und Kyles Zusammentreffen bestehen meist aus Kyles Anmachen, bei denen er einfach kein Nein, welches klar gesagt wurde, akzeptieren konnte und deren beidseitigen Wortgefechte. Die Sprüche, die sie sich zum Teil gegeneinander ausgespielt haben, fand ich sehr amüsant.

Cara ist Anfangs die beste Freundin von Valerie, doch im Laufe des Buches bemerkt man, wie sich die beiden komplett auseinander leben und ich konnte beide Parteien verstehen, Valerie hat in der Geschichte irgendwann keinen einzigen Gedanken mehr an ihre beste Freundin verschwendet oder sich Zeit genommen für sie, aber ich finde auch, dass Cara manchmal keineswegs auf das Wohlempfinden ihrer ehemals besten Freundin geachtet hat.

Zudem habe ich mich in diesem Buch auch immer mal wieder gewundert, wo sich ihre Eltern befinden. Das eigene Kind wird über Nacht bekannt, es musste sogar einmal die Polizei den Platz vor einer Schule räumen, bei der Valerie aufgetreten war und sie macht dies alles alleine durch? Fand ich leider etwas unrealistisch, wenigstens hatte die Mutter ein oder zwei Auftritte, aber der Vater kam leider nie vor.

Die Freundschaften mit der beliebten Clique, ging mir auch zu schnell vonstatten. Isaac war womöglich der einzige Charakter, den ich wirklich gemocht habe, er kam mir sympathisch vor und hat in den meisten Situationen genau das gesagt, was ich in Gedanken hatte.

Für mich waren die Handlungen der Charaktere in manchen Situationen etwas überspitzt und übertrieben, außerdem konnte ich zu keinem Charakter wirklich Sympathie oder eine Bindung aufbauen.

COVER
Das Cover bekommt von mir die gesamte Punktzahl, wirklich ein Volltreffer! Wundervolle Farben und das V kommt ganz besonders zur Geltung, was perfekt zur Geschichte passt und zu den Accessoires, die Valerie ins Leben gerufen hat. Das Cover hat mich definitiv sofort angesprochen und mich auf die Geschichte hellhörig werden lassen!

FAZIT
Das Buch ist etwas Leichtes, etwas für zwischendurch mit einer guten Message für seine Entscheidungen einzustehen und sich selbst treu zu bleiben, ebenso wie die Message, dass nicht alle es tun, es vollkommen okay ist, wenn du es nicht tust und man sich diesbezüglich nicht wegen dem Druck der Gesellschaft dazu verleiten soll - in das Leben eines anderen Menschen sollte sowieso niemand eingreifen oder sich darum irgendwelche Gedanken machen, leben und leben lassen.

Ich finde es sehr gut, wie Valerie für ihre Überzeugungen und Sichtweisen einsteht und diesbezüglich finde ich auch, dass keine weitere Gruppe angegriffen wurde und Valerie keinem ihre Meinung aufdrängen wollte. Ich finde die Kampagne, die sie ins Lebens gerufen hat, total toll, denn durch das Aufsehen, dass leider durch das YouTube Video von ihr erweckt wurde und weshalb sie fast bei jedem Gesprächsthema war, hat sie etwas Großes und Gutes gestartet, womit sich auch so einige andere gestärkt fühlen.

Leider war mir das ganze Buch aber zu oberflächlich und hatte keinen Tiefgang. Zu den Charakteren konnte ich keine Sympathie aufbauen, auch wenn ich Valeries Überzeugungen und Schlagfertigkeit meistens mochte. Zu Kyle konnte ich dies noch viel weniger aufbauen, zumal er in diesem Buch auch nicht wirklich oft anwesend war und am Ende plötzlich von großen Gefühlen sprach, bei denen ich die Entwicklung leider gar nicht verstanden und mitbekommen habe. Die Liebesgeschichte war für mich leider nicht nachvollziehbar. Außerdem hat er ihr Nein, welches immer wieder klipp und klar gesagt wurde, einfach nicht verstanden. Wenn Valerie und Kyle Gespräche geführt haben, fand ich die zum Teil aber ganz amüsant, weil Valerie auf jeden Kommentar einen guten Konter einlegen konnte. Manches war für mich ziemlich überspitzt und zu übertrieben, wie in einem Teenie-Film, der alle Klischees besitzt, die es nur gibt. Zudem hätte das Buch meiner Meinung nach auch gut ein Kapitel vor dem Epilog enden können, denn dieses Kapitel fühlte sich schon so an, als würde jetzt alles abgeschlossen sein.

Das Positive an diesem Buch waren für mich der angenehme Schreibstil, wenn auch die Handlung manchmal sehr abgehackt und hektisch wirkte, man kommt beim Lesen schnell voran und die Message mochte ich sehr.

Mal schauen, ob ich den zweiten Teil auch noch lesen werde, da er aus Kyles Sicht zu sein scheint, bin ich eigentlich schon interessiert.

Sooooo... I finished it and I firggin loved it! That twist in the epilogue was great, I would have preferred it to be a year rather than 4 though, teenage love seems more special and romantic but nevertheless this book was fab! I couldn't have asked for a funnier and romantic book. It was a LOL read with a little love.

After having time to think about this book, I find that I had way too much problems with it to give it two stars. I did like some messages and how Valerie stood out for herself and what she believed in, but I felt like even the message this book was trying to send could've been done in a better way, and I didn't 100% agree with everything Valerie said, especially toward the end. But my biggest problem with this book is the love interest, Kyle Hamilton. I simply hated him and everything he represented. Never at any point did I think he or his actions were 'swoonworty'. He repeatadly disrespected Val. Disrespected her values and opinions and practically everyting she stood for. While Valerie was mostly respectful of other people's decisions and opinions, Kyle thought his idea of prodigal 'lifestyle' was the only one to have. His opinions were the only ones that mattered, the only ones that were true, repeatadly shrugging aside the MC'S values. His disrespectful behavior was masked as 'banter' with the heroine, but witty banter it was not. Kyle was simply selfish, self centered, spoiled, disrespectful, misogynistic celebrity used to getting what - and who - he wanted every time he wanted and I hated how this book was trying to romanticize his behavior. I hated how the way he broke up with her was romanticized, since he did it only because of his selfish, shallow and spoiled nature. The only thing Kyle Hamilton was able to think about was sex. Never in any point for me did it seem like he fell in love with her, only in lust and that's becaue she was the only one in his life who refused him and his ego couldn't bear that. There was no respect here in the romance and that's one of the essential things in a healthy relationship.

“Becoming sexually active is a huge decision. It's not one we should let the world or even our own boyfriends make for us.”

Firstly: starting this book, I was a bit wary that the story would either ridicule girls (any people really) who want to wait for marriage, or that it would be really preachy and against girls who want to be sexually active. To my great relief, neither of the feared happened. Yes, Valerie was ridiculed in school for her choices by some kids, but then the tide started to change and it became an actual movement.

V is for Virgin is by no means a perfect book, I had quite a few problems starting with some of the characters, but it's awesome that the author was trying to pass on such a positive messages - that you shouldn't be afraid to say no and decide for yourself. That it's your choice.


“There is too much pressure on teenagers to become sexually active,” I heard myself say. “I’m not saying that everyone needs to follow my example and wait until they’re married, I’m just saying that people shouldn’t be ashamed or scared to admit it if they aren’t ready for sex. People need to know that not everybody is doing it.”


I so don't feel like writing anything in depth for this one. I honestly enjoyed it more than I thought I would. It also raised some important questions about sexuality and the fact that it's your choice and yours alone if you want to wait or not, so the overall message was great. While I didn't personally agree with every one of Valerie's opinions, I loved how strong she was about it and how she stood up for herself and what she believed in. She was also surprisingly judgment free, which I didn't expect. It was all about one's choice for her, and the fact that you shouldn't let other people's opinions pressure you into something you don't want. So thumbs up for the positive message, and pretty admirable heroine.


“I really felt for poor Lacrosse4life. Even anonymously he was the only guy to admit to being a virgin. But my heart especially went out to those two girls who admitted to getting pregnant. One had given her baby up and the other had had an abortion.
Suddenly, I didn’t mind my self-professed virginity being posted for the world to see. I didn’t care that people were laughing at me. I didn’t even care that my name was painted on a stall in the boys’ bathroom.
Someone had to stand up for these poor girls, and for anyone who was afraid to say no to sex. Afraid of being mocked. Afraid of being dumped. If that person had to be me, then so be it. I didn’t think I could do much to change the ways of the world, but maybe I could make it a little better for the sexually challenged population of Huntington High.
Then, suddenly, I had the perfect idea how.”


Thumbs down however would be for the love interest - Kyle - for me. That guy was so far from being my type, it's actually funny. More often than not, he was acting like an arrogant, rude, mysogynistic asshole caring more about sex than anything else. The supposedly 'romantic' song he wrote for Val was about how he wanted to have sex with her. he was only capable of thinking about one thing and one thing only. He also couldn't respect her decisions and constantly ridiculed her for it.
Yeah, I think I'm swooning now. *Insert heavy sarcasm here*
They were very dysfunctional duo, so I don't really know how I'd feel like reading the sequel honestly.
So overall, the romance was the worst aspect of the book, and let me tell you, this story was way too much centered on it. I simply hated Kyle.

I forgot about the cameras. I forgot about my parents. I forgot about my campaign. I forgot that I was supposed to be a role model. In that moment the only thing I could think about was Kyle.

One of the other negatives was Cara, Valerie's best friend. I really liked them in most of the book, but the way Cara started treating Val toward the end was not okay. At the beginning, I had already noted that this book portrayed great female friendship, but sadly it got ruined and I can no longer say anything positive about it. I really hate when authors do this. Write great female friendships which you start to like only to ruin them in the end for stupid reasons. Why, just why. I was so let down by this!


“Originally, things had calmed down for a while. Then the album came out, and Kyle gave an interview on a late night TV show announcing to the world that he’d personally dedicated the album to me (and my legs) because he’d written every song on it with me in mind. This sparked a lot of tabloid gossip because there were some seriously dirty songs, and some really angry songs, and even a few completely romantic songs on the album.
Apparently what I inspired in Kyle Hamilton was a multiple personality disorder.”


Though yes, there were other new friendships that were likeable enough. For example, I quite liked how the author slowly showed us that Olivia wasn't such a witch after all. It kind of smashed the trope of 'the high school bitch queen'. So there's that at least. Also, there was something missing for me. Don't know exactly what, but the fact that I wasn't invested in the romance and didn't like Kyle at all is a big part of it.

This book was entertaining read. It's clear that the author was trying to send a positive message to her readers, and that's awesome. But I just hated the romance - and Kyle's character as a whole - way too much to not be constantly annoyed with this book.

It started out okay. Boyfriend was a jerk for dumping Valerie when she doesn't have sex with him. But then the whole campaign starts, and everybody popular wants to be her friend, hottest guy in school likes her and is a virgin himself, and I felt like I was being preached at.

If I had a daughter, would I encourage her to read this book? Um, maybe. If the issue wasn't so cut-and-dried. Valerie has somewhat solid reasons for wanting to wait til marriage to have sex, but the whole thing just bugged me somehow. It strikes me as very unrealistic, especially when the campaign shows a decrease in teen pregnancy. It just...I'm glad the book was written, because I dealt with being the only virgin among my friends for years, and their response to it was usually disbelief, awe, and lots of questions. Am I satisfied with how the book went? No. She was never really tempted, at least by someone she was in a long-term relationship with where they regularly exchanged the l-word. Being tempted by that, and a 'sexy' rock star are two different things. (I found Kyle to be obnoxious and arrogant. I definitely wouldn't sleep with him.) I would have more respect for the character if she'd actually been put in difficult situations where her resolve would have been tested.

V is for Virgin was my first book by author Kelly Oram and I have to say, I cannot believe I hadn’t heard of this author before she approached me to review her books. I must have been hiding under a rock because V is for Virgin is the perfect example of good contemporary romance books for teens!

Val Jensen is a teenage girl who’s always known she was adopted from a young age. Not wanting to follow in her birth mother’s footsteps – having a baby while being a teenage, Val made the big decision not to have sex until she was in love and married. However, she hasn’t told her boyfriend her plans, so when she does, he blows up and dumps her. The problem is, when her break up goes viral on YouTube, Val is suddenly given the name “Virgin Val” and she’s soon she's in the spotlight and even gets the attention of the leader singer of Tralse; Kyle Hamilton. How is Val ever supposed to stay true to herself and the nation, when the hottest guy in the world keeps fighting for her attention?

I’m not really sure what I was expecting when I started reading this book - a light fluffy read, but I have to say I was really surprised by the outcome because V is for Virgin is definitely more complex than it appears. With the storyline surrounding Val – who wants to remain a virgin until she gets married, it really does send out a great message to the younger readers. How many women do you know that wished they’d waited to have sex or wished it had been more than what they had experienced? Well, I guess we all know someone who wishes it and this book really is an eye opener to that. Yes, it can be beautiful but if your young and you have your whole life ahead of you, what’s the rush. Let it mean something. Don’t rush out and do it because all your friends are or because your boyfriend is pressuring you, do it because you want to and when your ready. V is for Virgin really does send out the right message to teens that are pressured into having sex and I definitely think there should be more books like this.

My favourite part of this book was Val herself. I loved her attitude - she's a happy go lucky girl who doesn't let anything get her down. She remains strong and true to herself and it shows how much courage she has. And then of course, Kyle...typical bad boy Kyle. Even thought his hard times, he's still a swoon-worthy character. I loved the banter between Kyle and Val and here's the perfect example;

" Virgin Val?" Suddenly I missed being called Legs. It was Kyle who'd said it. I ignored him and looked at the girl.
"How did you.....?"
"You're a virgin?" Again, Kyle.
"You say that like it's a bad thing," I couldn't help but snap.
"I'd be more than happy to help you fix that problem.
"I'll bet you would."

My only 'complaint' with the story was I wish there had been a little more to the ending. I finished it and I was left will with, well did they or didn't they? I had to go back and re-read it and I did get it eventually, but I guess I would have liked a little more closure. Other than that V is for Virgin is a fun, loving read - one that deals with real situations and I can't wait to read Kelly Oram's other book - Being Jamie Baker soon.

*3,5 ⭐️ V is for Virgin war ein wirklich witziges, charmantes und schönes Buch. Valerie war eine ganz tolle Protagonistin, die gerade heraus sagt, was sie denkt und fühlt! Ich bin zunehmend genervt von Protagonisten, die einfach nicht für sich selbst einstehen können. Kelly Oram schafft es in dieser Hinsicht immer wieder, dass ich vor Begeisterungen Flick Flacks schlagen könnte. Ich habe in den ersten 150 Seiten immer wieder lachen müssen oder saß mit einem Dauerlächeln auf dem Sofa, weil viele Situationen einfach viel zu herrlich amüsant waren. Die Geschichte ist locker und leicht und eignet sich perfekt für zwischendurch, um mal wieder den Kopf frei zu bekommen oder sich von einer stressigen Phase zu erholen. Bei mir war es genau das, was ich gerade gebraucht habe. Ich mochte auch die Thematik Abstinenz und Jungfräulichkeit sehr, weil ich weiß, wie viele Jugendliche sich dadurch unglaublich viel Druck aufhalsen und die Sexthematik zunehmend ihren Alltag bestimmt und immer noch beim sozialen Status eine viel zu große Rolle spielt.
Allerdings muss ich auch Kritik üben. Mit den oft überzogenen Situationen wäre ich gut klar gekommen, aber nicht mit den fehlenden Gefühlen. Einige Momente mit Kyle fühlten sich für mich sehr falsch an, die dann hinterher durch Dritte aufgelöst wurden, anders dargestellt wurden oder durch Valerie selbst, anders vermittelt wurden. Das hat mich oft zweifeln lassen, weil ich es ihr nicht abgekauft habe. Das Buch ist aus ihrer Sicht geschrieben, warum nicht also an dieser Stelle einen inneren Monolog einfügen? Innere Zerrissenheit kann man auch in der jeweiligen Situation darstellen und nicht erst hinterher kurz mal am Rande erwähnen. Ich finde das vermittelte ein falsches Bild und ich bin mir immer noch uneinig über manche Szenen. Generell hatte die Geschichte auch ein hohes Tempo und auf diesen 320 Seiten ist einfach unglaublich viel passiert. Da fehlte einfach die Zeit für große Emotionen und Gefühle. Letztendlich ging es mehr um Valeries Werdegang und wie sie zu der Person wurde, die sie vier Jahre später sein würde.

Puh, ich glaube, ich kann sagen, dass meine Meinung ist, keine Meinung zu haben.

Zunächst fand ich die Idee wirklich klasse. Die Message gerade an junge Mädels herauszugeben: Bestimme selbst, wann es für dich richtig ist und was sich richtig anfühlt und lasse dich nicht zwingen. Ich fand den Grund herrlich erfrischend, denn damit habe ich wirklich nicht gerechnet.
Auch der Schreibstil hat mir wirklich gut gefallen, hielt er mich doch wirklich gefangen zwischen den Seiten.

Doch worum geht es eigentlich? Alles beginnt damit, dass Val nicht mit ihrem Freund schlafen möchte. Seine, für ihn, einzig logische Konsequenz? Schluss machen. Doch wer glaubt, dass dies alles war, hat sich wirklich getäuscht. Am nächsten Morgen entstehen durch ihn Gerüchte, die alles ins Rollen bringen und uff... damit geht das Problem eigentlich schon los. Eine Band wird auf sie und ihre Einstellung aufmerksam und sie wird quasi über Nacht berühmt...

Aber... Ich persönlich finde es super schade, dass Val ihre Meinung darauf aufbaut, indem sie andere abwertet, ja, teilweise wirklich Slutshaming betreibt und andere sie dafür feiern. Man soll selbstbestimmt handeln, wenn jemand aber Spaß am S*x hat, wird er/sie erniedrigt? Uff... war für mich echt problematisch. Sich selbst aufwerten, indem man andere abwertet... das fand ich noch nie wirklich cool.
Hinzu kommt, dass ich Kyle, der Sänger der Band, die sie damals so gefeiert hat, zeitweise echt übergriffig finde. Angefangen mit seltsamen Kommentaren über in die Ecke Gedränge und dem Gefühl, dass er in Val eigentlich nur eine Eroberung sieht.
Auch fand ich die ständigen Streitereien zwischen Val und ihrer besten Freundin echt anstrengend... Das wären alles Sachen, die man mit einfacher Kommunikation hätte lösen können und irgendwie scheinen sie aus ihren Problemen auch nicht zu lernen 🙈 Außerdem fand ich, dass gerade Kyle echt unscheinbar wirkt und immer nur mal wieder seine Auftritte hat, wobei ich erwartet hätte, dass er mehr im Fokus steht... schade, da habe ich mir wirklich mehr erhofft.


Wisst ihr, was dennoch das Spannende ist? Das mich trotz aller Makel die Story catchen konnte. Dass ich trotz allem das Ende zuckersüß (wenn auch etwas krass) fand. Und das ich trotz allem Band 2 unbedingt lesen möchte, weil ich gespannt auf die Entwicklung der Story bin.

Valeria Jansen ist 17 Jahre und Jungfrau aus Überzeugung. Ihre leibliche Mutter ist ungefähr in ihrem Alter ungewollt schwanger geworden, weshalb Val für sich beschlossen hat, dass ihr Leben anders verlaufen soll und um dies zu schaffen, beschließt sie mit dem Sex bis zur Ehe zu warten. Als sie nach drei Monaten Beziehung ihren festen Freund darüber informiert, ist dieser alles andere als glücklich damit und beendet noch am selben Abend die Beziehung. Val ist außer sich vor Wut. Als am nächsten Tag in der Schule auch noch Gerüchte grassieren, dass ihr Exfreund mit ihr Schluss-gemacht habe, weil sie schlecht im Bett sei, platzt ihr der Kragen. Sie stellt sich vor versammelter Schule auf einen Cafeteria-Tisch und macht deutlich, dass sie niemals Sex hatte und bis zur Ehe auch keinen haben wird. Ein Schüler filmt ihren Auftritt und prompt geht dieser auf YouTube viral. Neben vielen negativen Kommentaren gibt es auch einige positive, die Val dazu bewegen einen Schritt weiterzugehen. Sie merkt, dass sie nicht die einzige ist, die mit dem Sex warten will und so ruft sie eine Kampagne ins Leben, die Menschen vermitteln soll, dass es in Ordnung ist zu warten oder abstinent zu leben, bis man sich bereit fühlt. Im Rahmen dessen bastelt sie Anhänger mit V für „Virgin“ und A für „Abstinence“, welche sie auf dem kommenden Schulfest verkaufen und die Erlöse an eine gemeinnützige Organisation spenden möchte. Ihr beste Freundin Cara möchte für diesen Anlass eine bekannte Nachwuchsband aus ihrer Stadt engagieren. So lernt Val Kyle Hamilton kennen. Dieser erfährt direkt von Vals Enthaltsamkeitsschwur. In Kyle weckt dieser das Bedürfnis, sie von ihren Überzeugungen abbringen zu wollen. Doch scheint er bei Val auf Granit zubeißen, so sehr er ihr auch zusetzt …

Charaktere:
So leid es mir auch tut, aber Val war mir einfach vom ersten Kapitel an unsympathisch. Allein die Tatsache, dass sie vor ihrem festen Freund zunächst geheim gehalten hat, dass sie bis zur Ehe warten möchte und dann sauer war, dass er es nicht cool findet, hat mich wirklich sauer gemacht. Versteht mich nicht falsch, ich finde die Grundidee des Buchs gut und vor allem wichtig. Niemanden sollte sich gezwungen fühlen Sex zu haben, bevor er sich bereit dafür fühlt, aber auf der anderen Seite finde ich auch nicht, dass jemand verurteilt werden sollte, weil er Sex haben möchte. Und genau das hat mir in dem Buch bzw. in Vals Verhalten vollkommen gefehlt. Für mich ist das Buch sehr, sehr rückschrittlich von seinen Aussagen her. Ja, nicht jeder muss mit 17 oder gar früher Sex haben. Wenn man für sich entscheidet, das man bis zur Ehe warten möchte (auch, wenn ich Vals Gründe jetzt nicht so schlüssig fand), auch in Ordnung. Aber dann auf der anderen Seite jungen Lesern vermitteln, dass es falsch sei Sex haben zu wollen? Finde ich fragwürdig. Ich hätte es besser gefunden, hätte das Buch deutlich gemacht, das Warten okay ist, ABER wenn man nicht warten möchte, dass man sich über Verhütung informieren sollte, man mit anderen darüber sprechen kann etc. Meiner Meinung nach könnte das Buch dafür sorgen, dass junge Leser sich unter Umständen schämen Sex haben zu wollen und das sollte doch wirklich nicht der Konsens sein, den man im 20. Jahrhundert vermittelt.

Ich bin ein bisschen vom Thema abgekommen, aber für mich hängt das alles mit Val als Charakter zusammen, denn sie war die, die diese Botschaft, meiner Meinung nach, so rübergebracht hat. Während ihre eigenen Freunde da teilweise doch ein bisschen andere Ansichten hatten und von Val eigentlich kein Gehör erhalten haben. Oder wenn, stark kritisiert wurden für ihre Meinung.

Zu Kyle, nachdem was ich zu dem Buch vorher gehört hatte, hatte ich ihn mir schlimmer vorgestellt. Ja, ich fand es etwas albern, dass er Val von ihrer Überzeugung ‚abbringen‘ wollte. Aber im Endeffekt, wollte er es ja nicht einfach so, sondern er hatte wirkliches Interesse an ihr und für ihn war Sex nichts Schlechtes. Er hat sie auch nicht direkt bedrängt, er war einfach ein bisschen nervig. Nicht, dass ich das für gut empfinde. Ein nein sollte immer ein nein sein. Ich will nur sagen, im Vergleich, zu dem, was ich erwartet habe, war er eigentlich ganz in Ordnung. Im letzten Drittel hat man ihn auch nochmal deutlich besser kennengelernt. Wiederum empfand ich seinen ‚change of heart‘ nach dem Zeitsprung, am Ende des Buchs, eher fragwürdig.

Ansonsten ist zu Cara noch zu sagen, dass ich sie leider auch irgendwie anstrengend fand. Ich fand gut, dass sie eine andere Ansicht als Val hatte und diese auch irgendwann offen ausgesprochen hat. Aber dennoch war es sehr überspitzt und überdramatisiert. Ich hätte mir da eher eine ernste, sachliche Aussprache gewünscht. Cara war mir auch ein bisschen zu Jungs-fixiert. Sie hat dieses Klischee von „lässt die beste Freundin sitzen, nachdem sie einen Freund hat“, sehr krass bedient.

Schreibstil/Spannungsbogen:
Der Schreibstil an sich war in Ordnung. Vor allem im hinteren Teil, als es weniger um das ganze Thema Jungfräulichkeit und Abstinenz ging, habe ich die Geschichte eigentlich ganz gerne verfolgt und sogar überlegt, ob ich nicht sogar noch den zweiten Band lesen/hören möchte. Aber der Großteil des Buchs hat mich durch den Umgang mit dieser Thematik und der Message, die es herübergebracht hat, wirklich, wirklich sauer gemacht. Deswegen kann ich auch nicht viel zum Spannungsbogen sagen. Es war für mich teilweise eine Qual, weil ich mich so viel aufgeregt habe. Ich wollte es aber nicht abbrechen, da mir wichtig war eine Rezension zu dem Buch zu schreiben und das hätte sich für mich falsch angefühlt, hätte ich es nicht bis zum Schluss gelesen/gehört.

Fazit:
Ich kann dieses Buch leider nicht empfehlen. Ja, es hat eine wirklich wichtige und gute Grundidee, aber meiner Meinung nach, hat die Autorin es eher fragwürdig umgesetzt. Ich finde es teilweise bedenklich was für Überzeugungen die Autorin jungen Leserinnen mitgibt. Es war für mich rückständig und sehr unaufgeschlossen. Kelly Oram ist vor allem für ihr Buch „Cinder & Ella“ bekannt. Ich habe es bisher nicht gelesen, aber es soll gut sein. Also, wenn ihr etwas von ihr lesen wollt, dann lest lieber das. Solltet ihr unbedingt „V is for Virgin“ lesen wollen und, wenn auch nur, um selbst zu sehen, ob die kritischen Meinungen gerechtfertigt sind, okay. Aber bitte geht ein bisschen kritisch dabei heran. Es ist vollkommen okay, wenn euch das Buch besser gefällt als mir und einigen anderen, ich gebe auch zu, dass es an einigen Stellen recht unterhaltsam war, aber wie gesagt: Bleibt bitte kritisch und hinterfragt die Dinge, die dort angesprochen werden.

I read V is for Virgin a month ago and it's a book I still think about. Kelly created some unforgettable characters and very memorable scenes.

I think this book has a much needed message - it's ok to wait to have sex. Despite the fact that it seems that everyone around Val believes and acts differently she sticks to her values. Amazingly Kelly manages to tell the story without coming across preachy or putting down those who do choose a different path.

I loved the friction between Val & Kyle. So fun to read and what a great ending to the story!

While I wouldn't hand this to my 12 year old yet I will let her read it in a few years.

Content: I agree with what Kelly said - For a book all about sex, there's not anything even close to a sex scene in it, but because of the nature of the topic there is a lot of innuendo/sexual humor and some name calling.
