Despite many warnings from the council of witches, Tessa has failed to turn from her snobby / bitchy ways. The council decide enough's enough and strip her of her powers, cast a spell on her which makes her a plus size woman and send her to "fat camp" with a fairy acting as her drill sergeant.

Witch Weigh is a novella so there is little room for story or character development. I found it a little clichéd and derivative, but there were some good things in there to keep me interested.

“You want me to work with a FAIRY?”

That’s what happens when a witch feels entitled and acts like the spoiled brat she is. The fun character names fits the fun story inside. Easy reading, light hearted humor, laughs, love and some life lessons for an edgy witch.

Sweet and cute but not the fluff I was looking for. It was a mix of fluff and heavy-handed message. Tessa's emotional transformation wasn't believable. Interesting world with potential.

This was a short story about Tessa, a witch, who is very rude and selfish. The other witches get fed up with her and as her punishment they add 100 lbs to her, take her magic away, and send her off to a weight loss camp. Liam is sent to help her find her way who is her fairy godfather. There is a lot of flirting between the two, but to me, it lacked happening organically. It seemed out of nowhere and out of place.

Contessa Von Hellengaard, aka Tessa, is a witch. She also happens to a witch with a capital B. She's member of the Upper Hallows Witch Council, who are fed up with her antics and blatant disregard for rules. She's snobby, stuck up, and finds that using magic to get her own way is a lot easier than being nice, giving, patient, or following the rules.

The Council decides that it must resort to drastic measures in order to get through to Tessa and make her understand that there are boundaries to her magic and that, above else, she must be nice and unselfish. They decide that Tessa must have her powers removed and have assigned a fairy godfather to help guide her into a life of kindness. As if stripping her powers wasn't enough, they add a bunch of extra weight to her body and send her (and Liam, her fairy godfather) off to a weight loss camp. Will Tessa finally wake up and release the goodness that she has inside or is she doomed to be powerless and above all else ~ oblivious to her bad magic ways?

Tessa is a very selfish, spoiled witch. She believes that because she has magical powers she can do anything she wants without regard for anyone or anything. She really feels that she's entitled and doesn't care at what cost that comes to others. Her character was a hoot, actually. Her mannerisms when she was silenced or forced to wear ballet slippers or be around anything pink was great. After her arrival at the spa, you could really see progress in her but only after she'd been there for a while. Her progress, both physically and emotionally, didn't make great headway early on. After she began good progression, the author did a great job in not making is easy or perfect; Tessa hit a bump in the road, especially in her conversation with her aunt when she came to visit Tessa. There was still a bit of selfishness that was left inside that needed work.

Liam Kennedy spoke one of the (many) great lines in the book, as far as I'm concerned:

Tessa: "You're my fairy godmother?"
Liam: "That I am, with one notable difference." He winked.
(Mickelson, C., 2012, pg. 17)

This was a cute novella that really brings to light just how selfish people can be, magically endowed or not, and how their actions affect others. There were parts of Witch Weigh that seemed to walk a different trail than other parts (a little scattered or abrupt) but in the end, the points were made. The budding romance between Tessa and Liam was sweet and sincere and completely enjoyable to read. There was a bit of drama added concerning a job Tessa wanted in Europe that becomes a stumbling block but it made the novella a bit more robust. All-in-all this was an enjoyable, quick read.

Witch Weigh is a romantic comedy about Tessa, a witch who has been a hindrance to the witch community. The witch council decides that they need to teach Tessa the true meaning of being a witch. They strip away her magic and Tessa throws a tantrum. Her mood becomes even worse when she sees Liam, her attractive fairy godfather. Liam falls for Tessa almost immediately. He knows she is being punished for her foul attitude, but that is actually what he finds attractive about her. Disguising Tessa's apartment into a pink lovers dream, Liam tests Tessa's ability to look past outward appearances. She fails her first test, not even recognizes her own apartment and she then becomes a dog owner. Tessa hates dogs and Liam tells her that it is actually her pet cat and familiar, Jinx. Appalled at Jinx's new appearance, Liam informs her that Jinx wanted to be a dog.

Tessa wakes up and realizes that she has gained one hundred pounds. She is not only without magic but now she has to shed the extra weight the hard way. Tessa is at a fat camp and Liam is her coach. Tessa meets her new team mates and at first she brushes them off, feeling like she is better and above these mortals. She soon realizes the error of her ways and befriends the two ladies. Tessa also attends anger management classes and finds out that Marcus, a young man, has so much hate and anger in his life that he is tired of living. Tessa realizes that she has to help him somehow and starts talking to him and they slowly become friends. She realizes that her kindness is the key to loses weight and gaining her magic back .

Tessa and Liam grow closer throughout her journey to realize what being a witch is truly all about. When Tessa doesn't get her dream job, she parts ways with Liam on a somewhat sour note. Tessa permanently made Jinx into a dog and the council of witches gave Tessa her magic back. They told her that they had seen what she had done for Marcus, Bethany and Claudia. They also told Tessa that they had seen her and Liam's relationship and encouraged it by packing a bag for their dream trip. Liam and Tessa patched things up and confessed their feelings for each other.

Witch Weigh is such a sweet, romantic and hilarious story. I could not put it down. It is a novella so you could read it in one sitting, like I did. I recommend this book for those looking for a great short story with hints of paranormal comedy all wrapped together in a romantic story.

This book puts a whole new twist on witches and fairy godmothers. You will be laughing at the antics that this witch gets into. This is a novella so it is an extremely fast read.

The story itself is a very simple one. The characters are interesting, and I have to say I really liked Jinx. He's a cat/dog but too cute and reminded me of my own cat who I swear was a dog in a cat's body. I have to admit that in the beginning of the book I really did NOT like the main character, she was a witch who let me tell you she is a royal *($*%, yes I just cursed, but she was just that annoying. I really did want to put her over my knee and give her a royal spanking. I had to laugh at what the council decided to do to her wicked little self and admit that I don't think I would have been quite so lenient in punishing her.

The fairy turns out to be one hunky guy, and he is a laugh. Tessa's reaction to her fairy godmother was a riot. I actually laughed out loud, and my husband says "What are you cackling about, woman?" I looked at him and laughed harder picturing him as a fairy godmother.

I am going to give this book 4.5 stars. I thought that it was entertaining, albeit short. But it didn't quite hit that 5 star mark for me. Probably because I felt parts were a bit skimmed over and time warps happened quite a bit. I couldn't really keep track of how long it was between one page and the next.

Tessa Von Hellengaard is a witch with a capital B! Rude and pretentious, she uses her magic for all the wrong reasons. Charmed fans if you will, remember the cardinal rule, no personal gain. Well Tessa missed that memo! At their limits her coven decides it's time Tessa learned a lesson in humility. The once powerful size 4 witch's magic has been taken away, and her physique now dons a larger frame. To add insult to injury, her familiar has the personality of a cat but the body of a dog, Tessa hates dogs. Oh, and she's saddled with a fairy godfather.

Liam Kennedy is the extremely charming and sexy fairy godfather that Tessa is determined not to be attracted to. Liam falls hard for the witch he's trying to rehabilitate, and Tessa finds herself loosing more than just the weight and the attitude along the way.

Fast paced romantic read with a comedic twist. Tessa comes to realize her magic can be used to help someone other than herself. Mickelson adds her own flare to the close to worn out PNR genre and proves that even though actions have consequences, lessons can be learned, people can change and there is the possibility of a "happy ever after"!

This book was seriously a delight to read! Tessa I loved her she's just all wild, crazy, and carefree:
"So you're saying the real problem is that I'm acting like a witch?"
Her aunt leaned forward and shook her head. "No, my dear, the real problem is that you're acting like a b****."
Also she holds her cat dearly like everything else can be taken away from her just not her cat! "Marilyn could have Tessa's fairy godfather, she didn't care. Much. But her cat? Oh, no, that was going too far." The chemistry between Liam and Tessa is playful, and I really enjoyed that aspect of their 'non' relationship:
"...Don't pretend you haven't done worse." He lifted her chin and kissed her. "We both know you can ever be so naughty."
"Would you like a personal demonstration?" Tessa reached up and threaded her fingers together behind his neck.
Again I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to see what the author has in store next.

I'll begin by saying When I first started this book, I did not like Tessa at all. I wanted in fact to slap the arrogant, spoiled brat in the mouth for her insolence toward the older witches.
I do however give praise to Ms. Mickelson for being creatively capable to bring a character to life in such a magnitude. Its a lost art among the older more recognized authors, but this book brings hope to us book lovers as indie writers are reviving the craft.
Many applause to the council on how they handled Tessa! I can't say I would have been as lienient though lol.
Enter Liam.. Can you say meow ladies? A fairy of the hottest order. I was very amused at Tessa's first reaction to her "fairy godmother".
The "lessions" Tessa endures from Liam had me laughing out right the whole time. I could only wish those us real witches had the capabilities to do even half the things in this book!
I give this book 5 of 5

Witch Weigh by Caroline Mickelson is a fun quick read that kept me absorbed and had me laughing out loud.

Tessa, the main protagonist, who happens to be a real witch with a capital B, has a lesson to learn and Liam is just the hunky fairy to teach here. In this novella, we follow the highs, lows and cravings for calories as Tessa steers herself down the complicated path of discovering compassion, friendship and love. The author, Caroline Mickleson, achieves this very effectively in a fun and light-hearted read.

Tessa's character is easy to follow, and her sarky humour was very entertaining. If you're looking for an entertaining, short read filled with magic, a wicked sense of humour and a promise of romance, be sure to check out this lovely story.

Contessa Von Hellengaard starts as a self-absorbed, high-and-mighty witch with a feisty temper. While you hope that she gets what she deserves, you can't help but connect with her as she finds herself in a situation ridiculously well suited to her needs. Along with her familiar, Jinx, Tessa finds her life weighing in the balance and coming up short. The timely intervention of her coven, led by her Aunt Trudy, starts Tessa through a masterfully designed obstacle course that opens her eyes to her true fate.

The characters are well developed and enjoyable to watch as they grow and change. While this is a novella, it is the perfect size. Caroline Mickelson has a great sense of timing, humor, and irony. This fast paced story takes you where you need to go. If getting there is half the fun, Witch Weigh delivers a full serving. It is a delightful story that I would feel comfortable recommending to anyone. I'm definitely putting Caroline Mickelson on my "to watch" list.

Tessa is a witch or so i have been told.. I mean handing a construction worker from a high crane by his overalls doesnt seem all that mean to me.. Especially when you take into account that she was late.. i mean who hasnt wanted to do that.. i may have road rage issues though.. Her other exploits arent really mentioned they were glazed over.. I really wish they wouldve gone into more detail.. Im pretty sure ive met witchier characters in middle grade books.. just saying.. Nonetheless shes gotten herself into trouble with her behavior..

She is stripped of her magic and given a fairy godfather.. One she is quite atrracted to.. He poofs her to a fat camp ad adds an extra 100 lbs.. To teach her a lesson..

This Novella was an extremely fast read.. i enjoyed watching Tessa learn humility and care for other people.. Even though i wished she was witchier!!

Witch Weigh is a delightfully funny twist on paranormal romance. Tessa is a witch with some serious attitude and it is no wonder that she needs a serious kick in her derriere. Enter the witch's council, with a no way out option for her - get help via a fairy, or no powers. Mickelson crafts a powerful female character in Tessa, and yet she allows her character to grow, which is something not everyone does. The lessons Tessa must learn are hard, but once she sees the light ahead she knows she can be a better person, and then a better witch. Once I opened this book, I did not close it until the very end, a one-sitting read. The plot is so well crafted that you easily get lost in it. My only complaint, I wanted more. There were aspects that I just wanted more insight into, but that is my issue not the author's. Now added to my Top 13 of 2013.

This book would have been MUCH better as a full length novel, and not just some quick tidbit. There's no sex, so don't get your hopes up. It's steamy but only in the looks department, if you get what I mean.

The characters go through a rather believable change, but as I said, the story belongs as a full length novel. This way, there would be more time for the characters to grow, rather than just over the span of a few paragraphs.

The writing is a fairly easy read with no problems that I've come across. I rather liked the paranormal take on romance; an average paranormal world but with a softer, gentler feel than what I've been seeing a lot of lately. It's a nice change. Definitely a sweet little read, and to think it was free on Amazon! Wahoo!

A great (short) romp from Caroline Mickelson, who's quickly becoming one of my favorite indie writers. In Witch Weigh, sassy witch Tessa dumps her cauldron of attitude all over the deliciously indomitable fairy Liam. Sparks, fun & great dialog ensue!

The perfect companion to a summer afternoon by the pool!

Would you enjoy reading it again:
No. The plot was predictable after the first five pages, there was nothing related to Halloween (which is a shame because there really could have been), the characters were unmemorable (nothing unique to them, no unique dialogue/ nothing interesting said, etc.), there were a lot of random plot elements that seemed out of place/ rushed (refer below) and there was no humor (where, with a title like that, there could have been tons of humor). - 1

Summary:
*SPOILERS* A witch, who uses her powers to hurt people who annoy her, loses her powers from a witches council. She suddenly has tons of weight and has a fairy godfather (who is her love interest). She ultimately learns that there is magic on earth without using actual magic. The love interest gets her ideal job where he ends up stating that he would rather be with her than have her dream job. The witch agrees: she would rather be with him than have her ideal job. But the witches council that took away her powers end up stating that she can have her powers back, her dream job and be with this guy.

Did you enjoy the plot:
It was bad but I kept reading through it. There were random plot elements that were thrown in that made no sense: why did the witch turn fat in the first place? The witch was snarky and sarcastic but she clearly knew right from wrong, and the witches council didn't seem to understand that... it seems foolish that the witches council (and the rational for this entire story) is based on the council's inability to decipher sarcasm, and there is no mention about this detail. This story (based on the title alone) had potential but it was a typical Hallmark story without any genuine feel-good elements - 2

Did you enjoy the writing style:
It stunk. It was very basic and it felt like the author just wrote down the first thing that came to mind rather than considering the character's POV, etc; in other words, the book felt rushed because it didn't expand on concepts/ themes and it spent too much time focusing on the contrived plot that we see in every Hallmark movie. Maybe if this book was a full book (and not just a novella) then the author could explore more about the witches backstory, add humor, add details about the setting (which there were basically none in this story; I had no clue what time of the year it was but it sure didn't feel like Halloween, which is should have), the theme (could be focusing on why she feels the need to punish people who annoy her), plot holes (why did she fat as a punishment? Did she make someone fat in the past? Is being fat a shameful thing in her family?), etc. These details all make a book interesting and this book unfortunately had none of these things - 1

Good ending?
Very predictable and boring. You knew they'd get together in the end. There was no lesson/ moral/ anything of value to take away from this ending (not even any sort of commentary on how you could find love when you are fat; it just seems like she was fat and single then when she got her powers back and was skinny again then she fell in love). If anything, it made no sense why the fairy godfather would hurt himself to be with her; and the author should have explored that concept further. - 2

Format: audiobook (2x, when cleaning apartment/ lifting)
Average rating: 1.5 stars. Round up: 2 stars.

WITCH WEIGH is the first book in the Special Gifts series. WITCH CHRISTMAS is a follow-up story with these same characters.

I loved the movie SHALLOW HAL. In it, a misogynistic jerk learns that women are more than the sum of their “pretty parts.” He learns to appreciate their intellect, humor, and personality beyond the joke. (As in, she’s ugly as a dog, but she has a nice personality). He is ‘cursed’ with seeing a woman’s inner beauty. So, the self-absorbed diva looks like a hag and the sweet, but over-weight girl-next-door’s charm is all that he can see.

Tessa’s treatment was sort of the opposite of that. It was similar in that she had to let go of her self-centeredness and narcissisms, but she I think she had to learn more. She is the one cursed to be overweight and worn looking until she learns to give instead of demanding. Once she learned it wasn’t all about her, more came to her… more friendship, more respect, and more love. She also had to learn acceptance when her cat was turned into a dog as part of her lesson from the other witches. Her whole life was upended. It took a long time for her to figure it all out, because witch, with a B, really means stubborn!

I truly enjoyed the characters, the story, and the setting. In addition, we’ve now been introduced Fiona, another Fairy Godmother, and Bethany, Cody’s sister, from MAGIC WAND RANCH.

Note: while I was given this book as a free copy, my opinions are my own and are given freely.

I had a really rough start with this book. I think a lot of it is because we don’t see most of the bad behavior Tessa’s accused of, the beginning of the book feels a whole lot like victim-blaming. What I saw was Tessa trying to defend herself and getting cut off at every turn. That made the punishment, particularly with no explanations about what was going on, feel really harsh to me. Somehow, I’d connected very closely with Tessa. Watching as everything she valued in her world be systematically taken apart in front of her broke my heart. I don’t really get the ending either. It happened too fast and way too easily. Liam needed to grovel a lot more. There’re also several plot lines that are left hanging open that I hope will be tied off in the following book.

Eh....this book was too short. There was not enough time to get to know the characters or for the characters to get to know each other. Some action took place off page. The main character was not very likable most of the book. There may have been a reason but we are never told that. The one thing she really wants and may have been good at was taken from her by the guy that is supposed to be her HEA and suddenly she is ok with that? The thing she did everything for and she is ok with not getting it?

I have picked up some nasty bug and having my eyes open is really hurting. I stumbled across an audio book version of “Witch Weigh” and was drawn to it because it was only about 3.5 hours long and meant I could listen as and when I felt well enough.

Despite the twist of fantasy added in, I could really relate to to Tessa and her personality as I also find I live in the moment and fail to appreciate my surroundings.

Heartwarming, uplifting, and a really easy read that had me laugh out loud a few times recognising some of my own personality traits!
