From Christ to the World: Introductory Readings in Christian Ethics

Rate this book
This is a single volume that effectively introduces students to the full breadth of the discipline of Christian ethics. This reader captures the range of timely issues related to ethics but not at the expense of essays that show the theoretical foundations of the field. Part One examines the sources of Christian Ethics―Scripture, tradition, philosophy, and science. The norms, forms, and contexts of Christian moral theories are reviewed in Part Two. The final section discusses contemporary questions about human sexuality, medical practice, the use of force, economic justice, ecological responsibility, and more. Relevant biblical readings and a series of case studies accentuate the text.

This is an excellent resource text that provides many different voices on various topics of Chrsitianity. I didn't always agree with those voices but that is one reason why I think this text is valuable.

This book contains great excerpts from other lectures, speeches, and books. However, it's large size makes it uncomfortable to read in print.

In compared to "Moral Issues and Christian Responses," another book assigned for my ethics class, I found this book much more helpful for articulating Christian points of view on ethical issues. The academic engagement allows for one to understand an argument and then deconstruct it to understand the core values being expressed. This is a key skill for doing ethical analysis and engaging those of other ethical view points. Although some of the essays are more dense or more inspiring than others, this book is a great asset to someone going into ethical analysis.

Some articles are interesting but overall the book is relatively flat.
