This is a foundational text for both hobbyists and professional entomologists in Hawaii!
The first third of the book consists of articles that briefly review Hawaiian geography, entomological history, insect evolution, conservation, and other pertinent topics. It is written with the entomology student in mind and reads like a scientific literature review. However, the information suffers from its age (published in 1992), as seen in the use of outdated insect orders and references to older research and now-defunct organizations. Unfortunately, some of this great information may no longer accurately reflect the true Hawaiian insect fauna of today.
Where this book truly shines is in its stunning array of photographs. The images are organized by hexapod orders but also include other arthropod classes. There is a particular focus on endemic and native insects, and the quality and composition of the photos are immaculate.
Finding these beautiful insects today might pose a challenge, so this book serves as an incredible reference to some of the most prolific Hawaiian insects.
