This book is unique in that it describes an ancient legal system and uses modern legal notions to structure its content. It is deficient in a number of important respects: the author is not an Egyptologist but rather a law professor, the text does not cite important Egyptological sources in German and French, and it can be criticized for inappropriately presenting ancient legal ideas as if they reflected 20th-century notions.

A treat to read on law in ancient Egypt. This is a truly interdisciplinary book opening the doors to our understanding of law in a world very dependent upon scribal classes to function. However, that dependency created a very stable system, even in the face of conquest.
