Si racconta che un giorno Cratete avendo visto un giovane borbottare da solo, gli abbia chiesto con chi stesse parlando, e che lui, bruscamente, gli abbia risposto: «Parlo con me stesso». Al che Cratete lo avrebbe subito messo in guardia dalle cattive compagnie.
