Stories recounting journeys have been popular since before Homer's Odyssey. Following that tradition of fine travel-inspired storytelling is a collection of five tales from around the world, with "Crossing Europe on the Orient Express," "On Safari in East Africa," "A Royal Train Through Rajasthan," "Cruising up the Mighty Yangtze River," and "Traveling Canada's Transcontinental Railroad." The quality of writing is excellent: descriptive, informed, spare, amusing. But the photography knocks your socks off, takes your breath away, and enacts all the other clichés for greatness. This book presents travel, travel writing, and travel photography at their best.
Typical of this type of book it if full of superlatives and expressions of wonder and and grandeur. This book is dated but it is still interesting to experience the trips that this book records. The articles include a trip on the Orient Express, a safari in East Africa, the Royal train through Rajasthan India, a cruise on the Yangtze River and a cross Canada trip by train. Each article wants you to experience the trip yourself. And maybe, just maybe, that will happen.
