These are the memoirs of a naval officer who served right through the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, from 1793 to 1814. He saw action in the West Indies, in the Channel and off Africa. He fought at Trafalgar, aboard HMS Tonnant, and was wounded. In 1812 his ship ran aground off Boulogne and he remained a prisoner of the French until the end of the war in 1814.

A slow read but a good one. Written in the vernacular of Georgian Times, I read 2 chapters a day over several weeks. Many of the seeds of the more modern "Age of Sail" books can be found in this memoir of one of the many sea captains who helped create British sea dominance during this period.

This is a publication of the journal of a real life Horatio Hornblower. Perhaps his career isn't quite as exciting as that of Hornblower but it is real. If you liked the Hornblower series or "Master and Commander" I would recommend this work.
