2024. I'm a member of the United Church of Christ. As in most denominations, we have a UCC creed. A recent conversation in my EFM class made me curious about how my creed was structured and what the background to it was. Lo and behold our church library had a copy of this book. Since January 1 I've been reading a chapter ever 2-3 days, letting the information sink in. The chapters are built around the separate phrases of the creed and then follow a pattern of how it draws from historical creeds, the philosophy/theology of the UCC, questions to ask yourself, supportive phrases from prior creeds, books of worship, and hymns. I had never thought so thoroughly about how our hymns reflect and teach about our faith as I have in reading this book. I found it a very thoughtful guide to both a written by committee creed and the development of a personal creed. Even if a reader is not UCC, if they are interested in creeds and their history, or want to thoughtfully develop their own creed, I do recommend this book. It isn't long - it only took me longer than usual as I wanted to savour the words.
