This book is so outdated (20 years) as to be worse than useless, providing data and guidance that is a generation old. They talk of bringing 10lb tents, external frame packs, and needing to wear boots, and of parts of the 3 trails that are completely different now due to major rerouting. I've thru-hiked the AT, JMT, TRT, VT LT, and WA PCT, and I would never recommend this book. It's old and broadly inaccurate, causing it to be worthless as a reference document. I read the Basics section and the AT section. It has some good general advice. Some of it I knew but some I did not and was useful. I felt that some of it was horridly out of date. She talks about a 10 lb tent!?! making me think the book was pretty old. No one in their right mind should be backpacking with a 10lb tent. But then another section talking about other lightweight gear made me think it was more current than I thought. Copyright was 2001. Not sure when tent wts started dropping but if
