Traces the cultural roots of the German celebration of Christmas, and explores their various holiday traditions, including music, gift-giving, special foods, and religious observances
For looking like (and really, being) an educational text this was quite good. It had an interesting historical background about Christmas and its changing observances throughout history, a description of current practices that hit all the highlights that I was aware of (and a couple I wasn't), and then how-to sections with carols, *recipes, and craft instructions.
*I have to add the caveat that the couple recipes I looked closely at seemed markedly different from the versions I am familiar with from German friends, and the people I asked said the ingredients seemed off to them. Maybe these reflect poverty-era substitutions, or attempts to replace hard-to-find ingredients such as persipan or oblaten. But if that is the case I would strongly prefer that this was explained.
