Part of a series of straightforward and entertaining guides aimed at the beginner, the improver and the teacher looking for new ideas.
How To Read Music is for everyone interested in music. It is for the beginner — and for those who already have some musical knowledge. This new, easy-to-understand book really takes the mystery out of written music. It shows you how to read the music of your choice — Classical, Popular, Folk or Jazz Music from all over the world. Music for singing. Music for the guitar, piano, organ, violin, recorder and most other instruments. Everything is explained step by step, right from the beginning. There are well-known pieces of music to read, a useful Musical Dictionary, a Note Directory and a Directory of Musical Signs where you can look up musical words, notes and signs. This book even shows you how to choose your own pieces of music. How to Read Music is written by Roger Evans, author of best-selling music instruction books. It is recommended for schools, private lessons, and for learning at home on your own.
This is not a music theory book; the author covers a lot of "what" with very little "why". That is, however, a positive: the vast majority of musical symbols and terms are covered, in order of frequency, in a very compact book. Why is this music in 12/4 time? Check a music theory book (or find different music). How do you count 12/4 time? Roger Evans has you covered.
Great guide for a beginner like me! I used a few of the pages of music to practice playing the piano. I will definitely use this book as a reference in the future too.
Very clear and easy to understand, just don't get too court up on the lists they give out and knowing the correct name for everything, you will be looking back on pages constantly anyway
