In 1969 Gertsch abandoned abstraction for realism. He is best known for this later period in his career, especially (at least on a popular level) for his images of famous people such as Patti Smith.

Personally I find his earlier stuff much more interesting.

In between those two examples was an period of brightly colored "diffusions" that I found extremely boring.

Also, there are a couple of interesting essays.
