I had the good fortune to study with Phil in grad school right after he first published the novel. He gave me an inscribed copy without me asking. Played tennis with him, too. Gave him a good battle, but he beat me. I was having trouble with my glasses at the time and had to get a new pair right after that. So maybe I was handicapped.
