This book is called Debbie's Visit to the Countryside in English. Now that I am home, and my parents are getting ready to move, I'm looking through all my favorite childhood books. This was one. It wasn't till recently, though, that I realized the book was from Editions Casterman, and that it was originally in French. Go figure. There's something about the hyper-idealized kiddie world of Marcel Marlier that still makes me sad I can't live in between the pages. I prefer Debbie's Birthday Party , though, because of the pictures of food, and because Debbie gets her hair done instead of having to clean up the scraped knees of her farmer-boy neighbor.
Contient un “pardi.”

5 stars & 5/10 hearts. Oh, I adore these illustrations!! AND THE DRESSES—MY HEART!! Also the text is just super fun to read aloud, with Christophe and César and Pipo… One of the best Martine books, or at least one of my very favourites. ;)
Martine has fun at aunt Lucie's house and with Christophe, the farmer's son. She plays with her dog Patapouf and the dalmatians in the beautiful nature of the mountainside. She collects plants for her herbarium (a collection of plants) and dries them in paper and writes information about each plant beneath the flower or plant.
These older Martine books are a lot more cerebral than the newer washed down versions.
Debbie is the USA English version of Delahaye's French Martine series.
This is #27 in the series and was available via OpenLibrary. The pictures are the same in both French & English (& other languages), and just the text is translated. https://archive.org/details/debbiesvi...
So vintage mais en même temps so pretty!
The series on the little girl Martine has been one of my favorite child hood books. I loved the sweet little stories and the amazing illustrations. It's always a pleasure to go back to them and to have a close look at all the little details in the pictures.
Anita goes to Aunt Lucia's farm, to recover from being ill. The farm has beautiful programs for a child recovering from being ill in bed.. a nice neighbor, a friendly dog to accompany Pantufa, and an attic full of surprises make for a lovely book.
Lovely, as always. Sweet, nostalgic, and the detail of the backgrounds are so very stunning. A very sweet story about making friends, and things to do in new places.
