I have never read anything like Blue Paradise by Matt Bloom. The story takes place in the 90's on Manhattan's lower west side. Nick, a mid-weight boxer and Blue Paradise bartender, is the main character. Life and Bloom's characters are gritty and raw. They tell it like it is: Paddy, Nick's ball-busting boss; Nick's friend, Jerry, a down on his luck useless schemer always looking to make a quick buck;Margo, bayfly/whore; Gracie, Nick's co-worker; Jimmy, a prejudiced loud-mouth, the reason Paddy has fewer customers. Most of the characters have serious issues except maybe Nick's girl Alice, a mortuary assistant ...and others.
Nick's quandry, to fight or not to fight; to win the fight fair and square or throw the fight for a big payday. Will he cave in or do the right thing? If you enjoy a gritty no holds barred novel, you'll enjoy Blue Paradise. I must say Matt's ending was just fantastic, what a great contrast.
