The name John MacArthur is practically synonymous with excellence and it seems almost pointless to review his works. Anyone who has heard or read Pastor MacArthur knows that he is no slouch when it comes to the study of the Word of God. Having read over 20 works on the Gospel of John I can now say that I am gaining a grasp on the type of literature that is available on this topic. I am working through the gospel of John right now in a sermon series and have used this commentary. I have worked through MacArthur's commentary on Philippians as well in the past and found that to be much more in depth hence the 4 instead of 5. For broad themes, cross references, flow of the text and ideas on how to approach the text in a homiletic way this is a good volume to consult as a supplement to some of the other heavy hitter commentaries on the gospel of John (e.g. Carson, Morris, Keen ...more

If you want to really learn deeply not just about John but all the other parts of the Bible that connect to it, I can't think of a better way than this commentary.
