500 Words to Grown On is a book that focuses on the development of vocabulary by labeling or giving specific words to things. This book, intended for children at the age of 12-24 months, helps children see that a written word also represents the words we say. Through the literacy practices of reading and talking, the child’s vocabulary is broadening. When reading this book, the caregiver can help the child understand the words represent real things, part of print awareness, by pointing to the picture and the label as the word is spoken and having the child repeat the word. This also supports Early Literacy Print Motivation Skill by providing opportunities for the child to be an active participant in shared reading.
