Verlaine rimane nel part ...more

Verlaine l’a d

I wanted to like this much more, and if I weren't intimately acquainted with Verlaine's work over the span of a lifetime, I probably would have. Let's be clear, however, that the poetry is excellent. It is not, however, a translation of Verlaine. This is two poetry collections in one book- one collection of poetry by Verlaine, and one collection of poetry by Revell. Had I understood this distinction in advance, I would have rated higher. Despite my disappointment at the mislabeling, I do recomme ...more

I

Old ecstasy, this
Amorous fatigue, these
Woods trembling
In the broken grip of the wind,
While in the white treetops
Tiny voices sing.

Frail susurrus, a cooling
Gasp and murmur,
Ghost of an outcry,
Call it the bad sleep of the grass
Or a sound of creek water
Troubled by stones.

The sound is us -
My soul inside of yours,
Submissive, antiphonal, twinned,
A lament beneath
An anguish, a hot night,
Not a breath of air.

Ariette III

Il pleure dans mon coeur
Comme il pleut sur la ville ;
Quelle est cette langueur
Qui pénètre mon coeur ?

Ô bruit doux de la pluie
Par terre et sur les toits !
Pour un coeur qui s'ennuie,
Ô le chant de la pluie !

Il pleure sans raison
Dans ce coeur qui s'écoeure.
Quoi ! nulle trahison ?
Ce deuil est sans raison.

C'est bien la pire peine
De ne savoir pourquoi
Sans amour et sans haine
Mon coeur a tant de peine !”
