I give this at least a 4. It's a 1971 book, and it's hilarious but practical. It's an easy read, and if you're like me, you'll learn some things about yourself in the process. This book is a keeper. I've had my copy for years.

In common with many books with great titles, this one doesn't live up to the title. It does realistically deal with the question of reasonable amounts of housekeeping, but it doesn't really deal with the physical, emotional, ecological...all the multifold damages associated with trying to run households as if they were NASA clean rooms. Nobody can live in a NASA clean room, and the work involved in trying is severely destructive. To cite just one example, 'cleaning' chemicals can induce anosmia ...more

I owned this book when it first came out in 1971. I recently reread it and a lot of things still hold up. I still found it funny--she's a great writer, but there also were things I found awfully dated, like the references to what "hubby" might think--did we still really care that much about pleasing men at our own expense in 1971? I cringed at the reference to being pregnant and having cocktails. The thing I always remembered, and that made a big difference in my life, is that no one can ever ha ...more
