McCannon does a fantastic job of conveying the Arctic's history, from pre-history to this last decade. As he proceeds through each period, he hops from one region to another, describing what's going on in arctic North America, Greenland, Scandanavia, and Russia.

This book took all of forever to read and often left me reeling as Leeloo Dallas Multipass does when she watches all those videos about humanity and sees how much we kinda suck! But most definitely worth a read!

A really engaging and large scale review of Arctic history, prehistory to present. Engages in social history, geography, environmental issues, and geopolitics alike. The go-to source for this region.

This is a fantastic overview of the Arctic, from pre-history to present. It is engaging, enlightening, compelling, and comprehensive. I would love to see an updated edition, to see what McCannon has to say about the state of the Arctic in the years since this was published.
