After a 30-year reign, during which he made himself thoroughly detested by all the leading statesmen of Europe and the political leaders of Germany, and then helped start the war which almost wrecked his country and destroyed his dynasty, Wilhelm II then spent the years between his fleeing Germany in November 1918 until his death in the spring of 1941 in exile in the Netherlands, fruitlessly plotting his return to his homeland and throne. I am not a scholar, and did not approach this reading from such a standpoint. I actually read this work because of a reference to him in a biography on Theodore Roosevelt.

But, this this is one of the best biographies I've read, despite the hapless subject. I make this statement for the following reasons:

1) the author was highly consistent in his portrayal of Wilhelm, to me, never going beyond above-board portrayal of his Wilhelm's character, never descending to bashing or jeering, and never tryi

A waste of opportunity to be a pivotal leader of his country instead to become a vain arrogant participant in its destruction. The lost lives of a generation of all sides haunt us till this day.
