Chernobyl's Atomic Legacy
Chernobyl 's Atomic Legacy : 25 years since disaster is a collaboration of eight different photographers from all over Europe. It contains 74 poignant photos over 96 pages. The book documents the current state of Chernobyl and neighboring worker's town Pripyat which is the site of what is considered to be the worst nuclear accident in the history of mankind. The 30km Exclusion Zone set around Chernobyl is slowly but surely being reclaimed by nature. Pripyat is now a site of negative heritage, a decaying monument to the lives and memories lost by the people that once inhabited it. The book aims to illustrate what has been left behind, the objects, rooms, schools, hospitals, and homes. It conveys both a sense of the tragedy that remains, whilst still being objective and documenting the changes the area has undergone since its near total abandonment.

This is photo essay about Chernobyl community.. The authores try to show how power of atomic power can destroy community. The first section show community center abandon, this artfull photos show room destroyed people with out people, art with no eye seeing them. Nation that has been shaken by these events.
We next gone to hospital, where the cotangent of radiation infected center of healing. Hospital bed empty and wasting, bio sample sitting with not answers single office with paper every where. These darker town and brown color give feel of the past and present.
Then we see school, with art photo of what child had drop and left behind. Again example of part of there life take so young. The toy horse with broken head and how the memory will be broken for all had to change.
This book is compelling. This book does lack landscape and some variety , the use of close up for drama was over done.

This book is a picture essay of the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster, 25 years later. Some of these photos are readily available on CNN.com, most I have not seen before. Interesting not only to see what would happen to a community if 40,000 people left never to return but also how the photographers viewed their surroundings.
Very cool book.
Chernobyl is a fascinating study in so many ways. The government response, or lack there of. The effects on the people who lived there, left there, drafted there for clean up, have returned there.
Chernobyl seems similar to the story of Icarus. Reach higher. Go farther. Capturing the power of the sun under the cuffs of mankind for our use. Only if the cuffs aren't strong enough.....wings aflame....
If you are interested in Chernobyl, Voices From Chernobyl by Svetlana Alexievich is also a very powerful read, though not an emotionally easy one.
