How this book became best seller is beyond me. The narration is boring, repetitive, and too cliche. No symbolism, imagery and other literary devices are used by the author. There is no character development, they are exactly the same as from the start. In addition, the characters are also flat, too idealistic and have no flavor. Dialogues between characters are often meaningless and does not fit well with the flow of the story, makes you wonder whether it was a case of the author filling the pag ...more

The basic ideas are about friendship, courage, and nationalism. After long time no see, Genta, Riani, Ian, Zafran, and Arial decide to meet and climb the highest mountain in Java island, Semeru! Looking thru a paradise from the top of the mountain -after some terrible life/death moments-, with five of your best friends is truly an amazing experience. At first, the story flows fresh and natural but then its turned become over dramatic. There are too many quotes and wasted conversations in the mid ...more

"MEGA BESTSELLER" was written at the corner of the book's cover and the review at the back cover basically said that the book was very very good, plus it has a really cool cover, so I thought it would worth reading.

I did not bother to read the first chapter where the author introduced each of the characters. Readers should be able to find out more about a character through the story, after all, not through a detailed description at the beginning of the story. It was actually a turn off for me, b

i'm not even halfway through this but. wow. i just had to write a review immediately. this book isn't good at all. very evident that a man wrote this. it makes me so uncomfortable on the first chapters. i really don't get how this became a forking bestseller. like, uh, what? mega bestseller where?! and then the typing. gosh, it's the worst. i don't even read it anymore i just skim it. there's too much quotes and song lyrics that i don't give a fork about. this book is a torture. am i in the bad ...more

The story is about five friends who have been friends for seven years. There are: Genta, who considered as the leader of their friendship. Zafran, the artsy-kind-of-guy that in the future, he wants to be a famous poet. Riani, the only female friend in that group who has a bubbly personality. Arial, the most handsome guy in the group, who shares the same font name “Arial”, which is the font that I’m typing right now, it is because he has a bold body, get it ? And last but not least, there is Ian. ...more

I'm sure some of you have read this book. I myself can say it is too late for me to read it. I just read the book about on November last year, whereas the book was published in 2005. But, I think late is better than never right? By the way thanks to Annisa who’s borrowing me this inspirational book.

nice cover and catchy title. but 5cm failed to impress me further. the story is linear.. about a group of young friends and met again after separated for 3 months and went on an amazing reunion adventure of climbing the "mahameru" (The highest mountain in java-Indonesia). at first it was a flat pace rather slow.. but things get quite interesting as they separated, before entering the linear pace when they started the mahameru journey.
The story might appeal on readers who have experienced the "re

Shelves: novels
I rarely find Indonesian novel that is as good as this (probably not too much Indonesian novel I read). These are several of my comments:

1. This book is a daily life book that is really familiar with real life (although still it's too perfect if compared with real 'real life'). At least there is no such surprising event, dramatic moment, etc. Everything is very normal, down to earth, and very honest. That's why I love it

2. The story also has very good theme: about dream and how to reach it, very

why two?
1. i don't like this kind of storytelling, too much dialogue that offers nothing to the plot progression
2. There are no interesting character for me, the characters are just some kind of young adult you found nowadays, and if you like that kind of character, then you might like this one, but it is just a very big no for me
3. No memorable part for me except the last part when they are on their final way to the top of semeru, i feel the enjoyment of reading this novel at that part, but it

When I first read it, I thought it was a story about best friends who go through some kind of change in their friendship. But it wasn't. The plot was unclear and jumps from one plot to another. The style of writing and the point of the story - if you can call it a story at all - simply do not go with one another. Also, the characterising of the characters wasn't made clear and real. It was as if all the characters were one entity. Yeah, sure, they split up for a bit but even then there isn't muc ...more

Wokeh.. This is my first time reviewing book seriously. Wekekek (pardon for my bad english).

I choose this book for my first review coz I really love this book. At first time I fallin love w/ this, just because the cover is black :p. In addition, it tells about friendship.

5 cm, in reality, is proposing more than a "friendship-tale". This book also tells bout nasionalism, spirit, and love (story without love, just like food without salt, right? :p).

One part from this story tells about a man who i

Could be great but honestly it's an editing mess. I find it plotless, like a journal the author wrote with a sprinkle bit of fiction. I think I will be enjoying it more if I read it as a journal/blog post.

The best part of this book is the cover. Also I can't deny that the author has a wide span of knowledge, from which we can learn a thing or two.

The worst part? The characters. The wooden, preachy, and singing-too-much characters (except for Ian, the clown of the group. I like him. Though his '

Maybe some people think this is a kinky novel, because there are a lot of things going on here, and specifically at the first few pages you may think, "I'm so done." because this novel is like talking all the time, it tells the readers a lot of things but I'm sure not every reader understand the reference.
But, the more I read it, I started liking it a lot more and at several points it made me cry, like literally crying. This novel is a great reminder about loving our country, respecting it, and

There are no words I can say, except this book is super!!

By reading this book, reminds me of my friends, and all our story have been made.
I have best friends, and we have been close since high school (that means it's been > 4 years!!). I am glad to have them in my life, and that they always share everything with me.

From this book, the authors want to show that life is mysterious and unpredictable, but if you go through the life with happiness and joy, and you can open yourself to the world,

i do not agree with most people's opinion on how they don't like the ending of this book. for me, it's the most exciting part of it : how those five still maintain their senses of nationalism even they've grown older and older. therefore, it also sends message to the readers how your dreams will someday come true if you keep believing and trying (even the most impossible ones like the Happy Salma part, hahaha).

this book also tells us how important friends are. love can be subsided for greater g

This book got it's name through the box office movie.. and suddenly people got excited and mountain-hiking became viral in a flash... but this book has moved me far before the movie (to tell you honestly, I'he never watched the movie).

I remember put a long quote from this book, about putting your dream not too up-above-the-sky instead only 5 cm in front your forehead to make it real, on my agenda when I was on 2nd grade of high school...

Now I believe I have good taste of books since I was young

A warm-hearted story of friendship and Indonesian. It will motivate to be a better person and to work harder to achieve your dreams and wishes (for my case (and Ian's), THESIS!). 5cm makes me want to be a backpacker and climb a mountain.

Tips: read it with your iTunes playing songs from The Cranberries, Coldplay, Frank Sinatra, Brand New Heavies, and Goo Goo Dolls.

Btw, the punctuation errors in this book really bug me.

Great book from indonesian writer. A novel of classical themes, friendship, love, and life but surely this one is different. Simple, not very complicated and easy to understand, still it has something to say and the writer couldn't say it better.

I love the song lyrics the writer use to replace some dialogues and narratives, although those are popular songs. The only down side of this book is the unnecessary ending.

Please read. No english version though.
