I've attended Celebrate Recovery for almost five years now, and I just finished reading "Life's Healing Choices" this year. It should have been one of those books I read when I started the program. It's a great book to use as a foundation for recovery from hurts, hang-ups, and habits. I really liked the testimonies at the end of each choice/chapter, which were the most encouraging part of the book for me. The thing is, you have to work the program. You can't just read a book on how it works or g ...more

Friends, you'll be seeing a fair number of reviews from me in the near future on books in this vein. Our church is starting a "Celebrate Recovery" group, which I am SUPER stoked about. "Celebrate Recovery" is a faith based recovery group that targets everything from addictions to codependency to sexual abuse recovery to...you name it. The amazing thing about this group is the versatility. The principles are transferrable to any recovery situation I've encountered thus far. Check it out!

It has been over 10 years since I worked through the 12 steps. This was a great refresher book from me. I don’t ever want to be back where I was before.

The author, John Baker, founded the successful Celebrate Recovery program (a Christian based 12-step program) based off of the 8 principles found in this book. These principles are gold nuggets mined from Jesus Christ’s ‘Sermon on Mount’ when He taught the multitudes about the Beatitudes. The simple truths shared coupled with the incredible testimonies of people having began their recovery journey will encourage and inspire you to not only trust God more, but to be willing to fully abandon yours ...more

This book is a must read for anyone who wants to find freedom, hope, and happiness from any hurt, hang-up or habit. Spelling the word RECOVERY in an acrostic format, Pastor John Baker shows how the Beatitudes give us 8 spiritual principles to mirror the secular 12 step approach. This book includes an explanation of what each of the principles mean in daily living, testimonies, and journal questions to write and share with an accountability partner. The 8 principles included in this book and whic ...more

Great information, a little hard to read, which is unusual as John Baker is a great writer especially when writing anything about Celebrate Recovery. I believe this might have been one of his first attempts at writing.

One of the most successful ministries of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California, is Celebrate Recovery, a biblically solid approach to repentance and recovery. When Pastor Rick Warren preached a ten-week series of sermons called “The Road to Recovery,” John Baker was inspired to write this life-changing book.

Baker, who readily shares his own past struggles with alcoholism, knows what works and what doesn’t when it comes to recovery. His goal is that readers find freedom from “hurts, hang-

Excellent, practical wisdom with a Biblical perspective for anyone struggling with a painful past, a habit they can't shake, or anything getting in the way of healthy and whole living. Each chapter offers a specific step to apply in the process of confronting an issue and growing beyond it. Personal stories of recovery from real people who overcame addiction and other unhealthy patterns of thought or behavior offer genuine hope that following the principals offered actually works. My first reading was completed 2/11/2011. Originally read for personal reasons this time read for ministry purposes participating in a recovery ministry startup. Life's Healing Choices presents a biblically based approach to dealing with life's hurts, personal short fallings and bad habits. Based on The Beatitudes from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, Mr. Baker offers in eight principles a sound, practical, for lack of a better work, program to change your life through the choices we make. I think this would be a very good book for someone struggling with an addiction.

In the absence of that, I think the thing this book does best is highlight that if you want your life to change, you have to be willing to change: who you are, your habits, your thoughts, your choices. And that all of these things are within the realm of possibility to change.

In the words of Charles Dubois, "the important thing is this: to be willing at any moment to sacrifice what we are for what we can become."

Searching for a way for peace? Dealing with hurts you have but have no answer for? How about any habits... and not just drugs or alcohol... food, gambling, porno, self-harm... mental health issues... how about those secrets you thought were buried for ever but are now surfacing?

This book is for you... If you can't find a Celebrate Recovery or feel unsure then this is the book for you as you try to get through life...

I have numerous books that I am reading all at the same time but no matter which I pick up on a certain day it seems to be what I needed to have read for that day. This has also been an encouraging book because as I read what others have struggled with and have overcome it helps me to see that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. That light for me is Jesus and I am thankful that He loves me no matter what.

I learned about how making the best of everyday often takes work. Having a book like this gives me the tangable tools I need in order to get the job done. Healing Choices is just that!.. Knowing I have Choices keeps me from letting people, places or things get the best of me.
I truly enjoyed this book for many reason, mostly because there are supporting scripture from the WORD that makes it real.

In a nut-shell, this book is about overcoming addictions and admitting that God is the one who can heal your pain. The program is very good. I think the author could have expounded more on some of the points, as in he glazed over some things quickly. The personal stories at the end of each chapter were very moving and motivational. A commended reading if you are suffering from hurts, habits, and hang-ups.

This book have been inspired me and have changed my life because of its dramatic ways that's been discussed in it. This book by John Baker have coupled with a strong biblical approach. In this book by John, he brought the three different topics such as recovery, healing, and spiritual growth together and I found out that no matter what issues we face and go through in our lives, we are all on the same track or on the same path.

It radically changed my life, gave me hope to finish the race well, and to fight the good fight of faith bringing freedom to others trapped in the prison of hopelessness, helplessness, and powerlessness. It helped me find hope in Christ through His transforming work of the cross and the resurrection.

Overall, a good self-help book offering sound suggestions for choices that can transform a person's life. Primarily directed at those who are dealing with hurts they have inflicted on themselves or others, the book would be beneficial to anyone seeking a more positive and happier life. The personal stories were not as well written as the other parts of the book.

John Baker Uses Biblical Principals to help readers overcome a variety of Hurts, Hang-ups, and Habits...Churches across America are using these pricipals along with behavioral changes to enable people to grow their relationships with Christ while healing. Look for a "Celebrate Recovery" Program at a Church near you...

The principles Baker offers and accompanying exercises have been a wonderful resource as I have walked alongside folks in recovery (i.e. all of us). For practical purposes, I did not enjoy the anecdotal stories/testimonies that Baker included at the end of each chapter. These have often served as distraction for people I've had read the book and work the steps rather than inspiration.

The book is good with lots of good practical things to do.
I was bothered by errors in the book, both Biblical and factual. Editors should have caught these.
I believe this volume is due for a major re-write.
