Gabriella was shocked to discover that her late father had promised her to a prince! She must marry or be left penniless. Ricardo, the irresistibly handsome ruler of the Mediterranean principality of Moldoravia, was not easy to refuse!
Determined not to be ruled by Ricardo, Gabriella's defiance began in the bedroom. But she hadn't bargained on falling in love with her husband, or his insistence that this must be a royal marriage --- in every sense!
Born in Scotland and brought up internationally, Fiona went to boarding school in Switzerland followed by university in several European venues. Europe was the playground for Fiona and her aristocratic peers before she married and moved to South America where she ran her own design business, before turning to fashion, creating her own label and owning several boutiques in Brazil and the US.
However, like the characters in her novels, Fiona has always been mystically drawn back to Scotland, and makes no secret of the fact that her family home served as the inspiration for Dunbar in The Journey Home. Indeed, she is well acquainted with all the locales that are visited in all her novels which are infused with the pattern of the author's own life experiences, giving them a truly authentic feel. As she speaks seven languages fluently, Fiona has a unique insight and exposure into customs and lifestyles that most of us don't get when visiting foreign countries.
At Present At present Fiona Hood-Stewart lives in Europe and on her stud ranch in Brazil with her two sons. She travels frequently, regularly visits Paris, London and New York, and can often be seen at the races in Deauville or at Royal Ascot.
On Writing. . . Fiona credits her mother with putting her on the path to becoming a writer. "Mummy always read aloud to me as a child. She didn't approve of television and I spent many hours with my nose in a book. As a child I read everything I could get my hands on."
“Poor girl,’ she said in a sympathetic voice. ‘It can’t be much fun for you, I imagine?’
‘No. I worry about her. It’s weird. A few months ago I was free as a bird, and now I seem to have all these responsibilities.’
‘Well, you chose them, darling,’ she said, letting her fingers slip over his and squeezing his hand. ‘But why don’t you forget about all that for tonight and we can enjoy ourselves? Let’s go to Annabel’s afterwards and dance. I love dancing with you, Ricky. I miss it. In fact, I miss a lot of things that we used to do rather well together,’ she purred, lifting her glass by the stem and raising it conspiratorially.
Ricardo smiled and his eyes twinkled. ‘We did have good times together, Ambro, didn’t we?”
He needs an urgent skilleting with the world’s largest frying pan.
Actually it deserves 2 stars but because H was one of the dumbest H of HPlandia, 2,5 stars.
I am DEVASTATED that the name of the principality is not, in fact, Moldoravia as the back cover copy promised but the slightly less mockable Maldoravia. (Though that disappointment is offset by the fact that the OW's name is Ambrosia. AMBROSIA!!)
Anyway, 33yo Prince Ricky of Mold is in Brazil visiting an old friend of his deceased dad when he sees the 19yo heroine galloping a white horse along the beach before she strips down to a white bikini and frolics with the horse in the water. I think he might be in a shampoo commercial instead of a romance novel.
Honestly, in the hands of a better writer, this could have been a fun book. But Hood-Stewart's characterization is like reading the narrative equivalent of stick figures moving through a story outline. Gabriella is a teenager: immature, self-centered, and impetuous. Ricardo doesn't seem to have human emotions or understand how they work. Ambrosia is a scheming slattern who outmaneuvers the dimwitted Ricky at every turn. Worst of all, there's no real sense of closure to her comeuppance. The last time we see Ambro -- at the end of a phone call with Ricky after the tabloid incident -- she's left wondering "if she would come out winning in the end." Not decisively defeated. Not shamed. What the heck?
Also, this book could be triggering for people who haven't recovered from that whole Charles/Diana/Camilla thing...though except for the scene at the yacht club where Ambro out-sophisticated poor wee Gabriella, I have a hard time picturing CPB as an exotic Mexican hottie.
Wow I couldn't put this book down. It was kind of crazy and wtf and melodramatic but thats why I loved it. Prince Ricardo and Gabrielle must marry or Gabrielle who is only 19 years old will be left peniless. She accepts but is determined to defy him and show him she is not his for the taking. ofcourse she falls in love with her husband despite her will. Ricardo's ex mistress enters the scene and things become interesting. She won't accept the fact that Ricardo is married now and doesn't feel right carrying on with their relationship. Her plots and schemes complicate their married life and Gabrielle's pregnancy make things even more difficult for her.
Loved the angst, this was such an enjoyable book! I adored hero and heroine and how reluctant they were to fall in love and the evil other woman was so much fun! I loved to hate her! Only thing missing was an epilogue.
It starts out with a handsome prince in his early 30's arriving in Brazil to see his late father's old friend. The Prince, Ricardo, has never met his fathers old friend but knows that the man has never asked his father of a favor before and knew that his father thought his friend an honorable man. So when he received an urgent request to come to his home for a few days to discuss a favor he would like to ask of him.
When he first arrives he is immediately taken to his guestroom to get settled in before he goes over business with his fathers friend. After his shower he walks out onto the balcony to take in the ocean view and sees a young beautiful woman galloping down the beach on a white horse. He watches as she comes to a stop, dismounts, undresses down to a tiny white bikini and dives into the surf. She then pops up in the water and calls out to her horse to join her and to his surprise the horse does by frolicking in the surf along side her while she laughs and claps. Ricardo is struck by how beautiful this woman is and how majestic this moments is.
He goes down and settles in with the old man to discuss the urgent favor and finds out that the old man is dying of cancer and was given only months more to live and so he asks him to marry his daughter so that he doesn't have to worry about her being left alone in the world. Ricardo immediately declines. The old man says no worries. I hope you can enjoy a couple days here since you made the trip. Then in walks in the beautiful woman who he had seen on the horse in the surf. The old man introduces her to Ricardo as his 19year old daughter, Gabrielle.
They are left alone and Gabrielle doesn't beat around the bush and tells him that she knows what her father is up to and she would appreciate it if he would just tell him no that he won't marry her and be done with it. Then she advises him that she has no intention of marrying him so there. Ricardo finds her mildly amusing and a tad immature and relishes the act of taking the wind out of her sails by informing her that he has already told her father no and that he has no desire to marry a child either. Gabrielle decides she doesn't like how she was so rudely rebuffed so she starts turning on the charms and flirting in her virginal way. They go out riding together and she takes him to this secluded freshwater lake with a waterfall. They start swimming and then in passing she tells him she usually swims naked when she is there, so he challenges her. So she takes off the bottoms to her bikini, throws it at him and then dives in the water and swims away. Ricardo obviously turned on and taking this as an invite from what he assumes is a sexually experienced young woman, takes off his swimming trunks and goes after her. He catches up to her and starts play wrestling with her and then he kisses her. This she goes along with cause she is really attracted to him. Then he pulls her up against him so that she feels that he isn't wearing anything and is hard. Then he pulls her up like he is about to enter her and she freaks out and tells him "I can't! I haven't-" Then he gets mad and says she is playing a dangerous game and that he doesn't waste his time deflowering little girls, then he stomps off and leaves her there.
That evening as they were all gathered in the sitting room about to go to dinner when all of a sudden Gabrielle's father clutches at his chest and falls to the floor. He then begs and demands that Gabrielle and Ricardo both promise to marry. They eventually agree and promise, then he dies. Then the will comes out detailing that Gabrielle will only get the inheritance if her and Ricardo marry within 30 days of the will being read. Ricardo being a man of his word just accepts this and proceeds to make the wedding arrangements. Gabrielle however responds by acting like a petulant child, sulking, whining, complaining non stop to the point where Ricardo finds her irritating.
They marry and then she takes issue that they have to sleep together. He refuses to sleep separately because he doesn't want to deal with the gossip. Then he tries to talk her into making the most of the marriage, and starts to seduce her on their honeymoon. She ended up drinking too much campaign out of nervousness and gets sick and passes out. He takes care of her undresses her and puts his own pjs on her. The next day he gets called away on business. Time goes on and with his busy schedule and her always going to bed before he does and and him getting up before she does, the seduction goes on hold for a while.
Meanwhile Ricardo told his mistress that he is married now and doesn't feel right carrying on with there relationship. Deciding that he no longer feels the desire to bed other women for he is truly attracted to his young virgin wife. Then one day while at the yacht club he runs into his old mistress, Ambrosia, and she goads him by telling him that people are taking bets as to whether or not they think he has bed her yet. People say that by looking at her she looks untouched. Ricardo decides that he is going to bed her once and for all. That night he wakes her when he comes to bed and starts kissing her and whispering words of endearment to her removes her clothing and takes her.
The next morning they are both so very happy. She is amazed at how sweet and gentle he was and had never had an orgasm before and he has never felt the kind of feelings and magic that he felt with her with any other woman. That morning they make love again and then decide to go out on the yacht for the day just the two of them. Ambrosia gets wind of the excursion and orchestrates her and a group of friends to "run into" the newlyweds at the yacht club and invite themselves on the outing. Gabrielle immediately can tell that Ambrosia is a snake and up to something and that she has been intimate with her husband. It is then confirmed by one of the male guests who feels bad for her and assures her that it is over between her husband and Ambrosia. But watching them leaning into each other and talking so intimately makes Gabrielle not believe him. Afterward she goes back to acting sulky and indifferent towards Ricardo and he is frustrated because of it.
More time goes by, Ricardo travels a lot and has a lot of business that he has to attend to, and then when he gets wind that Gabrielle went off to visit with his sister, he decides that he is going to get her to fall in love with him and shows up at his sisters house the next day. Meanwhile, Gabrielle opened up to her sister in law(Constanza) and Constanza decides to make Ricardo jealous by inviting some young men of status who are known for being play boys. Ricardo shows up just in time to see his wife laughing and talking to the two young men after having gone on a ride (dirtbikes) with them. At which point he witnesses her start to fall and be caught by one of the young men. So now he is totally pissed. He immediately takes her to the bedroom to get settled in and they end up making love twice. At the dinner table he suggests that they leave the next morning, and Gabrielle objects saying that she was supposed to go out dirt biking with the guys again. He tells her he thinks it best for her to come home for there are some estate dinners and social occasions that he would like her to attend with him but its up to her. She chooses to stay.
The next day he doesnt go back home but does leave for part of the day to meet with someone for business, and when he comes back she is gone with the guys dirt biking again. He is worried about her because it is raining and the roads are slick. Meanwhile Gabrielle unknowingly is being set up to be alone with one of the men and he uses the rouse that he is showing her around the old historic inn that they stopped to lunch at. He even gets a key and she asks him why and he tells her its the nicest room and she has to see it. She says ok. Then he attacks. At first just a normal come on. Trying to kiss her. Then she tries to run away and he chases her then she knees him in the groin and he gets pissed. Then he recovers and apologizes and says I'll take you back to your sister in laws then he starts driving the bike really fast and she begs him to slow down and he laughs and speeds up then starts doing careless turns and curves and then they get into an accident and she is thrown from the bike.
Ricardo gets word and then finds her at the hospital right after she wakes and is informed that she is pregnant and did NOT lose the baby. She is shocked and begs that no one tells her husband. She still isn't sure this marriage is going to work out and she is afraid that if she he knows that she has a child with him he will never let her go.
He gets to the hospital and falls all over her with worry. She is surprised cause she thought he would be pissed. Before she is released from the hospital the guy who crashed the bike comes to the house to collect his belongings and Ricardo goes off on him for driving so reckless with his wife and informs him that he is never to come near his wife again or else. The guy shoots back I prefer skilled women in bed anyways so you can keep you little virginal schoolgirl wife. Ricardo punched him.
Ricardo continues to worry about her because she looks thin and pale and she is always tired. He leaves for London on business, and when he lands he sees Ambrosia. She immediately puts a plan in action beginning with talking the banker that Ricardo is meeting to slow things down enough to make Ricardo have to stay overnight instead of leaving right away to go back to his wife. Then she gets herself invited to dinner with him and the banker and has the banker not show. Meanwhile she organized a tabloid photographer to discreetly take pictures of them when they walk out of the restaurant together. She kisses him while they are walking out. Then she talks him into coming to her place for a drink for old times sake. He goes but when she tries to get him in bed he makes it abundantly clear that they are done and the he is married and plans to stay faithful. When he leaves she is pissed. She immediately calls the photographer and has him come over to give him a story to sell with the photos. Including how she just got into an accident with the playboy guy and that they are having an affair.
The next day before Ricardo gets back to his sisters Gabrielle reads the morning papers at breakfast and immediately showers packs and leaves. With all the paparazzi attacking her at the airport she decides to get back in the limo and have the driver take her to Switzerland where she attended boarding school up until a couple months before her father died.
Ricardo gets to his sisters and finds out from the butler that she is gone and the butler discreetly tells him why he thinks she left so upset and gives him the papers. Ricardo is so pissed it's palatable! He figures out what Ambrosia did and calls her up and gives her a good tongue lashing telling her he will never forgive her for this and he will never see her again then tells her to never come to his country again.
He tracks down the limo driver and finds out that she was taken to Switzerland and figures out the school thing. He goes there and after explaining everything to her and telling her he loves her and asked her if she loves him and then promises he will stay faithful and that he doesn't want anyone else. They go home. Then she tells him that she is pregnant and they make love again and he tells her that he will never let her go. The end!

It was an okay read. I was somewhat confused, and I don't know, disappointed, I guess. Before I read this, I saw a manga version of this book that I enjoyed; I thought it was a manga version. So I decided to read the HP version, and it wasn't what I expected because the story from the manga was completely different from this book (except the part about the heroine's father dying wish). Anyway, that and the fact that the heroine, Gabriella, annoyed me at times with her penchant for running away or jumping to conclusions are the reasons why I can't give this book more than 2 stars!
Yuck! The H was soooooo stupid and dense. He knew his ex mistress was a bitch but still agreed to meet her when she asked. Then she mucked things up and he still wasn’t sure it was her doings. He let her kissed him and touched him and he was unbothered by that, just eew no. Poor h, she had her stupid moments as well but I sympathise with her. The ending was just okay, felt that H didn’t grovel hard enough. Not 100% buying their love confession at all. Whatevs.

This book will instantly grab your attention. The ending wasn't the way I would have ended the book, but it is still a great read, and will make you believe in fairy tale love.
When Gabrielle's father was dying, he blackmailed Ricardo and her into marriage. They had to overcome several obstacles, including a former mistress, before they accepted that father knows best.
Good read i started reading and didn't put it down. I was a little unhappy with Prince Ricardo only in the aspect as to how he handled his ex-mistress. But Ricardo and Gabrielle's story was fun and sad.
All the right elements but I didn't connect with either the hero or the heroin. The story was flat (one dimensional). It was too simplistic and remarkably similar to Society Bride.
