A very silly (not-too-scary) story about losing a beloved toy.

That summer night, the toys were left outside. . .
. For the very first time, the Wonderdoll, the helpful wind-up robot, the thoughtful green dinosaur, and the rest of their plucky gang lie in the grass, gazing up at the stars. But one star seems brighter than the rest. As it grows bigger and bigger, the toys re

A story within a story. The toys are left out overnight and when darkness falls they start to worry. Wonder doll makes up a story to tell the toys all about a group of toys left out overnight (just like them). In the story they are captured by an alien toy looking for his own cuddles and meet thousands of other lost toys that he's collected in his search. The toys persuade the alien that the toys must be returned to their owners. Fortunately they are well labelled and so can be returned to their ...more

I really was expecting to love this book! After all, I loved Traction Man Is Here! and while this feels similar in style though with a healthy dose of "Toy Story"-ness, it is much, MUCH busier than Mini grey's other picturebooks. I had to stop half way through because it couldn't hold my attention between 7 different toys making comments in speech bubbles, and the vast amount of spot illustrations and and text boxes over full-page spreads.

Just too busy.

We've read several books by Mini Grey; in fact, we really liked the Traction Man series. So when I saw this book at our local library, I just had to borrow it.

It's a fun, spacey story that features toys that we left outside overnight. The narrative is fun to read aloud and the colorful illustrations, with the author's inimitable style, complement the story nicely. We loved the ending and our girls knowing the answer to "Where's cuddles?" before the characters did.

Overall, it's an entertaining
It's a long, lonely night for seven toys left outside after the boy with whom they live goes to bed. To keep the toys from becoming too frightened, the WonderDoll spins a tale of a lien in search of its own lost toy. Searching everywhere, it has amassed quite a collection of toys, not not its Cuddles. The ending will make readers smile, of course, since that is always the way it is. After all, once you find something, why would you continue to look for it? I enjoyed how the illustrations showed ...more

This book is very adorable with its concept of lost toys. It reminds me of Toy Story in a way since each toy clearly has a distinct voice and personality, portrayed with different fonts. Parents will find this story perfect for creating "voices" during story time.

What I love best is that it's a story of a story. The lead toy, Wonder Doll, tells the toys a story of an alien to distract them from their fear of the dark. The fun part for kids is guessing if her tale was real or make believe. I'd r

Some cute moments (love the odd, charming assortment of toys and the funny, oh-so-true ending) but overall it felt a bit too scattered for me. I much prefer her Traction Man series.

Toys are left in the back yard overnight and become scared. One toy tells a story to help pass the time. The toys imagine they take part in the story and find themselves on a spaceship. Many Earth toys have been captured by the alien who is also looking for his lost toy. By telling the alien it is wrong to steal and that someone will miss the toys, the alien is convinced he should release the captured toys. The alien begins to cry, sad that it cannot find its favorite toy. The Earth toys throw a ...more

My first impressions of the book, "Toys in space," by Mini Grey, include intensity of emotions of animals. Also, the story is relatable. It is a funny, light-hearted book and connects the readers to the characters. I enjoyed reading this story as it was adventurous and did a good job in engaging the reader. Literary elements include easy words and humor. Design elements include, characters only in the picture and very colorful images.

This is a cute little read for young children. Its a science fiction read about a group of toys that get left outside and happen to be watching the stars when they see one getting bigger and bigger. It turns out to be a space ship with a lonely alien inside and they all become friends and adventure together. It really is a fun read that many kids will enjoy.

A "Toy Story"- type picture book where toys left outside notice the starry sky and take an imaginary trip and help an alien find its lost favorite toy. Only the setting is in space; no other space facts.

Did I enjoy this book: This was a fun and imaginative book! Both my child and I had fun every time we read this book. Toys in Space follows seven toys who are left in the backyard overnight for the first time. What I love about the story is that rather than have the action happen to the toys, the toys are imagining (and telling) a story in which they are taken to space in order to pass the time until morning when their owner will come and take them back inside.

A group of toys are left outside one night. In order to pass the time (and to help them not be so scared of the dark) The WonderDoll starts telling them a story. She tells how they were beamed onto an alien spaceship where a space creature is collecting toys that have been left outside in hopes of finding his “Cuddles” (the alien’s toy) that is missing. But the toys are concerned that all the toys the alien has collected will never find their homes. Instead of keeping all the snatched toys, this ...more

Toys in Space by Mini Grey is a wonderful book about seven toys who get left outside one summer night for the first time ever. As the sun starts to set the toys begin to get frightened, all except for the wonderdoll. She tells them all a story to help calm them down and help them drift off to sleep. Then out of nowhere the dolls are being taken up to a spaceship by a beam of light. The alien who had picked them up has been looking for his lost doll cuddles and was hoping it might be with them. This was a very cute story having to do with space, and toys coming to life when people are not around. It was far from the traditional structure of most stories because the toys were making side comments, and were apart of the story while also not being apart of the story at the same time. If you happen to read the book, you will understand what I mean by that. Basically, the toys are forgotten and left in the yard when they discover space and stars for the first time when it gets dark. To pass ...more

Toys in Space was about a group of toys that had been left outside and tell each other stories to kill the time. The wonder doll takes over and creates a story that involves all of the other characters. She states how a star became bigger and ended up being a spaceship that was going to abduct the toys. After the toys are abducted, they meet a crying alien that has been looking for his toy named Cuddles which has been lost for a long period of time. The toys soon find out that the alien has abdu ...more

Having read a couple of Mini Grey's other children's books, I was pleasantly surprised at the positive and caring message in "Toys in space". This is a charming story about some toys that get left outside in the garden over night. The toys are scared of the dark, however they support each other through it and one toy tells a story to distract them. In the story, these toys meet an alien who has taken all the lost toys on earth (he has also lost his own toy). The toys make the alien understand th ...more

Kids love toys. Duh. So they are automatically drawn to just about any book about toys. Mini Grey's bright and colorful illustration will get kids' attention right off the bat, then the subject matter will suck them right in, much like an alien spaceship sucks in its victims (see below).

When some toys are left outside, they are afraid terrible things will happen to them. In an effort to calm them, WonderDoll looks at the stars above them and is inspired to tell them a story. The tale is all abou

For weeks I have heard from the little guy that I'm going to be eaten by aliens. He is rather humored by this thought and sometimes get a bit graphic about it asking what I would taste like to the aliens and which parts they would eat first. It doesn't really phase me. However... I have been bringing one book a week that has an alien them and each week he is terrified that it's a real book about aliens and is very hesitant to have me read it. This week he informed me that I shouldn't scare him. ...more

The toys are left outside on a summers night and they find this very scary. The story is of an alien who beams up lost toys and he does this because he is looking for his lost toy. Toys in Space by Mini Grey is a delightful and fun book in the Fantasy/Science Fiction picture book genre. The story begins when a group of toys are left in the backyard lawn on a summer night for the first time. As the sun begins to set and the sky started to get dark the toys saw the stars for the first time. As one of the stars started to get larger and closer the toys realize it is a spaceship! The adventures begin when spaceship opens up and beams the toys up into it.

Oh, the imagination and wild illustrations! Mini Grey is in a league of her own.

Toys in Space highlights what could happen when toys are left outside overnight. It's the first book I read on the subject and it can be a real fear for children. The new theme was my favorite part of the story before it got strange. The toys tell a story and they get beamed into a spaceship and meet an alien - a young alien - looking for a toy. The most disappointing section was the brief talking about probing. Prob

This book looked at the affect the outer world can have on this Earth. It didn't go into great detail about Space and it's incredible facts. It is a simple and short story about how toys that are left behind might be zapped up into space by an alien, as so happens in this book. The alien turned out to be ironically nice and understanding - which is unlike everyones idea of what an alien should be like. Therefore this story could teach children about the disadvantages of sterotyping and what a st ...more
