I thumbed through this and nearly put it back down, several times at a book sale before I decided to buy it for a few bucks. It will stand on my bookshelf as one of my favourite books I’ve ever read.
The author isn’t just someone who had something interesting happen to him; he is a WRITER with an incredible story.
The writing is intelligent, wry, honest, gripping, and stark. Without any spoilers, you will be happy with the ending.
I’ve been searching the internet for more of his writing and story, and what happened to him to no avail. If anyone knows ANYTHING about him or his life beyond the book, I’d love to know! I can’t even find any more copies of this book.
I want everyone to read this, but I don’t want to let anyone borrow it, so they’ll have to come to my place to read it! What a treasure.

Read the essay “The etymology of Queer”. Im forced to publish reviews of individual articles and essays under the book by the same author because fable/goodreads do not provide most individual articles as standalones.
This collection is in my TBR pile, (what an amazing cover).

A revealing look at how the medical profession treated patients in the early 1950's, before the time of patient's rights. A sad story that has a redeeming ending.
