Beyond Baked Beans Budget: Budget Food for Students
Fiona Beckett teaches students how to buy and stretch their food, explaining that it’s easy to eat well without spending lots of money. This mouthwatering collection of recipes is split into three eminently useful sections. The first is all about the basics of cooking for yourself, with recipes which help you to eat well without breaking the bank. Next is a selection of fantastic recipes for two and more, and for preparing big meals for students who live together. Last is a taste of something a little fancier, for those who want to impress but don’t have a whole lot of money. Fiona shows how to budget, buy, and use food carefully, with great ideas on how to save when buying, stretch what food you do use, and never waste leftovers. An invaluable book for every student.

Really liked this! Too late to give it to my son so I've read it instead. It's different from other student books, okay it does have the usual storecupboard ingredient essentials, shopping on a budget etc, but the recipes seem to have moved up a notch. Then I realised who Fiona Beckett is, she's a journalist who writes about food and drink, so I expect now for it to be very good!
Some lovely batch backing recipes and at the end of each recipe she gives you ideas on how to use up any leftovers you have or what to do with the other half of the yogurt pot or tin of something or other. These are not usually mentioned in other cookbooks, well except in Thrifty Lesley's books and website but then Thrifty Lesley is being thrifty!

This cookbook was given to me when I first embarked on student life, and it has followed me from the first time I attempted "the easiest ever pasta sauce" (and ended up with tomato-stains splattering the kitchen wall), and up until now, when I find myself searching through it especially when I'm hungry and short on cash.
Excellent book and advice for students.

Not that I'm a student any more. But these budget cook books have some good ideas for S-T-R-E-T-C-H-I-N-G food. And also make you feel clever, rather than povo, for doing it.
