An exploration of the exciting world beneath our feet follows trains, pipes, and machines, as well as looks at people throughout the ages as they have navigated underground caverns, tombs, and more.
Neat facts about the world beneath our feet with interesting illustrations and a search-and-find game on each page. Great for 2nd to 3rd graders and up in my opinion. I'm a 22 year old college grad who appreciates children's literature and I really enjoyed it.
Anyone who is offended that there is a page about the afterlife/underworld (aka hell) and a page about medieval prisons should attempt to understand that mythological believes and historical truths DO have academic merit. If they want to keep their child in the dark about these historically significant elements, that's their decision if they want to tape down the pages & censor the book or not purchase it altogether. Don't blame an educational book for trying to be educational on ALL elements of the underground world, especially if it's in a way that's generally tasteful and tame.
thumbs down. i was enthusiastic going in (love love love to read about caves, underground systems, geology...) - but apparently i did a terrible job of library browsing. this is a KIDS BOOK, but page one is all about HELL. a two page graphic spread of people hanging in boiling lava, devil at the center, etc... page two is about UNDERGROUND JAILS. people in solitary confinement in a hole in the ground, etc....
yes, later we get into caves and pipes and animals in their cozy dens. but otherwise totally not a good choice for the preschool crowd. unless you tear out pages 1-5.
