The Frog Prince

'The Frog Prince' is a very old tale, first written down by the Brothers Grimm. It tells the story of a princess who promises to be a frog's friend after he rescues her ball from the pond. Will she be able to keep her promise - and who is the frog really?

The book begins on the princesses birthday. The queen promises to get her whatever she wants. She chooses a solid gold ball. While playing with the ball it falls into the pond. She then meets the frog who offers to get it back for her under one condition, that the princess promises to be his friend. She promises anything, even the crown off of her head. So the frog gets her ball back and the princess runs off completely ignoring the frog and her promise without even a thank you. While the royal family is eating dinner, the frog is making noise outside the door that disrupts the meal. The queen answers the door and the frog begins to speak. The princess wants nothing to do with him but after he tells everyone about the promise they invite him in for a meal against the princesses wishes. He later stays the night as well continuing to bother the princess. All of the sudden he makes a very loud ribbit and grows into a prince. He proceeds to tell the princess about how a witch turned him into a frog, and the only way he could turn back into a prince was if someone treated him as a good friend. The princess was confused because she was never nice to him and wondered how he was able to turn back into a prince. He said even though she was rude she fed him and allowed him to stay and use her pillow. They later on became friends, and even got married at the end of the story. it was a little different twist on the classic princess kissing a frog to turn him back into a prince. This version was a little more pj and helped teach children how important it is to be kind. Language is appropriate with help reading through it.

This story is about a princess learning the importance of a promise. Her mom keeps her promise for a toy. Then the princess learns what a promise means when she is forced to keep one she made to a frog.

This was a very cute book. I enjoyed how there was a sub theme of friendship. With the importance on keeping a promise.

The book was about promises but I didn't like the moral of the story because the frog said "you have been a good friend" even though he pressured the princess into doing what he said. I don't think this would make a good book to read to children.

I really enjoyed this book. I originally saw a storyteller tell it to a year 1 class and he was so engaging that I found I really enjoyed the story in the way he told it. I was then at my second PGCE placement when a child handed me a book and asked me to read it. It was this lovely story and I was pleased to have found it in print.

Long ago and far away there lived a princess and the Queen promises to give her any toy she wants for her birthday. The princess declares she wants a ball of gold, which she gets and promptly looses. A frog saves it for her if she promises to be his friend. The princess promises and doesn't stay true to her word or say thank you. However frog perseveres and eventually the princess is nice and welcoming. The frog changes into a prince and explains a witch turned him into a frog and the only thing that could change him back into a prince was somebody being a good friend to him. They became good friends and when they grew up they got married.

This is originally a Brothers Grimm tale and quite a classic story. It would be good to use to encourage talk about being kind and considerate of others during a circle time session.
