The Blood Group Antigen FactsBook ― winner of a 2013 Highly Commended BMA Medical Book Award for Internal Medicine ― has been an essential resource in the hematology, transfusion and immunogenetics fields since its first publication in the late 1990s.The third edition of The Blood Group Antigen FactsBook has been completely revised, updated and expanded to cover all 33 blood group systems. It blends scientific background and clinical applications and provides busy researchers and clinicians with at-a-glance information on over 330 blood group antigens, including history and information on terminology, expression, chromosomal assignment, carrier molecular description, functions, molecular bases of antigens and phenotypes, effect of enzymes/chemicals, clinical significance, disease associations and key references.
This manual is more aimed at transfusion specialists than regular doctors per se. However, it can be used as an interesting reference guide in the exceptional cases of multitransfused patients that suffer from agglutination to several bags of presumably compatible blood. It's an unusual occurrence, but when it does happen and the patient urgently needs a blood transfusion, blood banks do genetic testing to locate antibodies towards highly immunologic non ABO and non Rh blood groups (usually Kell, Kidd, Diego and to a much lesser degree, the MN group).
In that exceptional scenario, this manual has brief respites on the genetic mutations of specific rare blood groups, their incidence in specific populations and some other information. This data is usually very brief, but it does include information on rare lowly immunogenic blood groups that are seldom mentioned in more commonplace medical literature.
As such, while perhaps not directly related to the duties of the average physician, it was nicely organized and well researched. For the right scenario, it could come in handy as a reference guide.
A must have reference book for comprehensive blood banks and definitely a bonus for SBB students. Some of this information needs to be updated as antigens have been moved out of collections and into Blood Group Systems, new genes have been identified, and I'm sure there are some other important updates in the last 8 years to be added. However, the organization and overall coverage of different blood groups and antigens is still thorough and relevant. Think of it as a quick reference encyclopedia for red cell antigens.
