A SEARCH FOR A BIRD BELIEVED EXTINCT TURNS INTO A TEST OF CONSCIENCE AND DEDICATION TO SAVE ONE OF THE LAST UNTOUCHED WILD LANDS.

Praise for Roger Real Drouin and NO OTHER WAY

“Drouin’s debut novel...is lyrical and poetic, soft and whispering, telling us, ‘It is a hope as light and fragile as the shadows flying through the tall grass”’—Grey Sparrow Journal

If Earnest Hemingway wrote Nick Adams’ stories to commune with nature, No Other Way captures and catalogs what Hemingway’s character found totally holy. Between urban development and the wild; between catcalls, call girls, the cries of ambulances, and the call of the wild is where the reader finds himself in No Other Way, among wet weeds, under the shadows of birds that aren’t found on the lamps in grocery store parking lots. No Other Way is written in clean third-person prose and is satiated wi ...more

This novel is about two men and a near-mythical bird.

Samuel is a famous bird photographer who is also dealing with his wife's death from cancer a year earlier. He is very familiar with the story of the Northern Stilted Curlew. It is a bird that has not been photographed in the wild in many years. That is because it may, or may not, be extinct. It is the bird watcher's equivalent of the Holy Grail.

The Curlew migrates several thousand miles each year. Among its last untouched nesting areas is in t

No Other Way is about the search for a ‘grail bird’. Not, in this case, THE grail bird — the Ivory-billed Woodpecker — but for the Northern Stilted Curlew, a stand-in for the Eskimo Curlew (don’t worry — other birds are given their proper names, it’s just the main player who is in the witness protection program.) It is referred to as grail bird on the first page of chapter one — before the main character is called by name, before any other character is introduced at all. The fact of this grail b ...more

If they gave half stars, this would be 3.5. This is a very good first offering and I'm excited to see what Roger Real Drouin will come up with next. There is no plot summary in this review - if you wan that, read the Amazon reviews. I'm a bit of a biased reader as a birder, but like any good piece of fiction, the story goes much deeper - into moral issues, universal truths about society and humans, and pains and joys. Some great twists in this book that I didn't see coming kept me interested. At ...more

Mr. Drouin wrote an excellent novel that transcends the basic story of a bird-photographer & park ranger versus a gas company. He delves into real issues like Faith, Awe, Wonder, Knowledge, Ethics & how those principles manifest themselves in real life.

This is a strong first novel for Roger Real Drouin & I heartily recommend it to anyone who appreciates nature & a good read. I am saddened by the fact that I probably would not have had the pleasure of reading this book if I did not know Roger on
