THE MISTAKEN has been sitting on my kindle for a couple years waiting to be read. Last year I bought the audio version knowing it would motivate me to clean up my ever growing TBR shelf. I figured since I hadn't read it yet I could just listen to it.

Within the first two hours of listening the narrator experiences the deaths of his parents, sister and pregnant wife. At this point, I wasn't sure if there was going to be enough characters left for the story to continue on. But with the

From the moment you start The Mistaken, you are taken on a wild, fast-paced, action-filled roller coaster ride that will keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time. There were so many plot twists and unexpected events that it all became a bit too much at one point, but luckily the romance-filled part of the story provided some much appreciated reprieve from all the action and

The Mistaken definitely caught me off guard. Though it is not my usual choice in reading material the detour it provided was very much appreciated. The twist and turns right up to the very end had my mind spinning.

** EDIT ** I got to about 75% but I'm putting it down for now... I don't think this is quite what I wanted at the moment. That being said, this book has a bunch of really high ratings so it must just not be meshing with my mood right now. I got about three quarters in but honestly the book kind of lost me a few chapters in, I was just hoping it would build to something that grabbed me. I just found a fair number of things (including the dialogue) unbelievable and had some serious issues with sev ...more

This book is amazing. It is a non-stop thrill ride that will keep your pulse pounding and keep you turning pages well into the night. Meet Tyler Karras. He has a great life. Until he doesn’t. Karras’ entire life falls apart before his eyes, sending him spiraling down into a hell of despair and self-loathing. When his brother Nick, who has ties to the San Francisco Russian mafia, suggests a despicable plan to exact revenge on the woman who inadvertently robbed Tyler of everything, Tyler readily a ...more

Alex Cavanaugh Fast-paced and emotionally gripping - once the ride begins, you won't stop reading until it ends. Told in first person from the viewpoint of three characters, the book draws you into their world immediately. Watching a man's life spiral out of control is gut-wrenching, but the real power of the writing is watching him try to set things right. Nancy Thompson's first book is amazing and would make for an excellent movie.

THE MISTAKEN was a fast paced, intense, and gut-wrenching read. When it was over, I ached at the thought of being ripped from its world--reality seemed too dull in comparison. Seriously, Thompson knows how to make you feel invested in her characters. Once you start this book, you will not put it down.

This is such a sad story. Thompson presents us with life at its toughest. She takes us on a whirlwind journey that I could have never imagined in my wildest dreams. A couple of times I just sat there staring, thinking ‘did that really just happen?’ Thompson doesn’t simply throw twists and turns at you, but rather rollercoasters and train wrecks, without ever having a feeling of impossibility. At one point I couldn’t figure out who in the world anyone was going to get out of this one alive. Howev ...more

I know Kim loved this book and I am in a minority of those who did not. However, for me I really wanted to connect with this story and its characters and I just could not. I found myself skimming a lot and even skipping some chapters to reach the end. I do not know what was not working for me and I guess it all just seemed like too much drama and not enough emotional connection to the characters the first half of the book. One thing I will say is the characters seemed condescending and sported m ...more

I love intense stories where the emotions of the characters are palpable, and The Mistaken absolutely fit that bill. It's a thriller through and through, but it also contains an element of romance that I crave in everything I read. Nancy Thompson gives us a heartbreaking look into a man's mind when his hunger for revenge leads him into a destructive, dangerous chain of events, and follows the nail-biting path to his redemption. This is a uniquely woven thriller that had me up close and personal ...more

First off, I wanted to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It has excellent pacing, and I found myself reading until the wee hours of the morning. I loved the way all these super broken characters kind of interacted with each other. We have Tyler who's addicted to alcohol, involved with the Russian mob, and whose bi-polar and pregnant wife committed suicide in a road rage incident while trying to avenge herself against a woman that made it impossible to have her Martha Stuart house in San F ...more

4 Really...That's Your Best Idea? Stars

So many bad ideas. So many. Bad Choices. Bad Advice. Bad. Just effing bad. This is not my normal genre. I don't usually read thrillers and that whats this is...a thriller. It has lots of twists and turns. And very little smiles and giggles. I kinda like the occasional smile and giggle. So this book stretched my comfort zone.

Tyler and Jillian are happy couple living in San Fransisco. But not for long. O

WOW! What an awesome read The Mistaken is. It has everything a mystery suspense thriller needs. How much does it take to drag any one of us to the bottom of the barrel? How much could you stand or tolerate before you reached your lowest low you barely register as human any longer? Tyler Karras reached his lowest after losing his parents and sister to death, his wife and unborn child also lost to death and his brother, Nick, owned by the mob. It was then he met the evil inside himself ...more

The main thing I'd heard about this book before reading it was that it was impossible to put it down. That couldn't have been more true! Once I got into the book I couldn't stop reading it, and read the whole thing in little more than a day.

But the story is more than just thrills and twists, as it is also filled with great characters who come to life through Thompson's writing. The most interesting thing to me was that all of the main characters did things that made me shake my head at times, b

This book is fast-paced and intense. Draws you in from the very beginning and leaves you unable to put it down!

There are so many great characters and so much depth to each of the characters.

Jillian is struggling. She has the amazing husband, she’s pregnant with their first child and not handling the pregnancy well and isn’t in the greatest state of mind. She so badly wants the white picket fence and when it’s taken away from her, all rationality goes out the door.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I started reading The Mistaken. It's a book that takes a while to build, but by the midpoint, I was flipping pages as fast as I could.

One of the things I liked about The Mistaken is the flawed protagonist, Tyler. He makes a number of mistakes (some of them truly awful) and he starts to walk a very dark path, but he's a decent person at his core, a man who succumbs to terrible weakness, despair, and finally rage. I didn't always like Ty or the things he di

The Mistaken is a non stop thrill ride with a strong emotional component.

The core of the story is a relationship between two brothers:

Tyler: The nice guy, follows the rules, stays out of trouble and is happy in his quiet life

Nick: The trouble maker, impulsive, immature, always messing up and causing damage

Both are touched by tragedy and at first deal with it differently. Nick's outside influences keep encroaching on Tyler's happy life. Soon more dramatic even

The Mistaken is a book with so many twists and turns - definitely there was not one dull moment. Tyler has a brother Nick who just can't seem to stay out of trouble and get his act together. To repay a debt, Tyler signs on with the Russian Mafia - much to Tyler's dismay. Nick feels he doesn't have a choice. He has gotten himself into trouble; his brother has a fiance and no longer has time for him; and he feels responsible for the death of his parents and sister.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Mistaken, first novel by Nancy S. Thompson. The book is told from several points of view; each chapter is designated with the name of the character telling the story. The main characters were very well-developed in large part because of this form of narration. Some reviewers have felt the first half of the book was slow, but I enjoyed that part of the book as it was setting up the characters for the thrilling last 25-33% of the story, and also provided background for a " ...more

The Mistaken is not the genre of book that I usually read, so I wasn’t sure if I would love it as much as other books I’ve read recently. I guess I was wrong.
I thought the beginning was a bit slow until I realised that the author was cleverly setting the scene for a series of events which has me holding my breath and gasping at the story that was unfolding. Once I was held in The Mistaken’s clutches, it was difficult, really difficult to put it down and I was getting cranky because real li
