Keepers of the Light(2000) is a historical fiction collection of "four romantic novellas spotlighting lighthouse heroines" by authors Andrea Boeshaar, Lynn A. Coleman, Sally Laity, and DiAnn Mills.

When Love Awaits by Lynn A. Coleman

3 stars

Fiona Stemple is the daughter of the lighthouse keeper. While her parents are on the mainland gathering supplies to prepare for the anticipated hurricane season, one comes early, and Fiona unexpectedly has to take care of the lighthouse during a hurricane.

Ian Duncan, a Scotsman, has been visiting her father daily, much to Fiona's annoyance. Fiona wonders why he visits so frequently... He offers to help, but Fiona wants to be independent.

This story didn't click with me. My biggest objection is that Fiona instantly becomes interested in Ian after she ends up accidentally (and innocently) in his arms.

A Beacon in the Storm by Andrea Boeshaar

4 stars

Captain Cade Danfield is on his last sea voyage with his ten-year-old daughter Jenny. He has a job and a house lined up so that living on land, Jenny can have the proper education she needs to become a lady.

Amanda Lewis is taking care of her dying mother as well as her mother's duties as a lighthouse keeper. Once her mother dies, she faces challenges on multiple fronts, as she wants to inherit her mother's position as keeper of the light.

I liked this story because of the kindness of the characters, and I thought there were some plot elements I haven't seen done very frequently. I've added another Andrea Boeshaar book to my to-read list.

Whispers Across the Blue by DiAnn Mills

3 stars

Captain Mason Channing has one last voyage transporting goods for his wealthy father's shipping business. His fiance, Julie Portier, Mason's "Jule," is the daughter of a lighthouse attendant. Julie worries when he's on the sea, and is looking forward to his last voyage being over. This story is about Mason and Julie facing challenges.

I liked the basic plot, but I felt like some of the dialogue didn't seem quite right.

A Time to Love by Sally Laity

4 stars

Eden Miles is the assistant lighthouse keeper at the Coquille River Light in Oregon, a position her deceased husband held until he died during a rescue attempt. She, her four-year-old son Christian, and Birdie, the housekeeper, form a close-knit family in the home adjacent to the lighthouse.

Captain Dane Bradbury of the Solitude, volunteers to deliver needed supplies to the lighthouse. Admittedly, this is after he sees the beautiful lighthouse keeper as he rode by in his stern-wheeler.

I liked this story best of all. I thought the secondary characters were good, and the romance seemed just right to me. I look forward to seeing what else Sally Laity has to offer.

This is actually 4 books in one. I'm not a big fan of short stories. I don't feel like they give the author enough time to really develop the characters. However, this was definitely one of the better sets of short stories that I have read. At least they didn't just plunge you into a forced romance in each one!

These are 4 Christian based stories set at lighthouses. I love lighthouses as a symbol of guidance, or the Light of Christ in our lives. My mom gave me this book. It is a quick read.
